Losing my mind I seize weapons; not that there is any reason in weapons, but yet to gather a battalion for war and to make a run at the citadel with comrades sets my soul on fire. Madness and rage overthrow my mind, and it occurs to me that it is splendid to die in armor.
– Virgil, The Aeneid, Book 2, 348-352.
Hillbuzz makes the point I’ve been pushing for months — the DONC hates its base. They hate us. Don’t want to be seen with us; disdain our manners and our mores; distance themselves from our habits and our biases. When we got back from Denver and learned that McCain had pulled an upset by picking Sarah Palin as VP we offered the DONC for sale on EBay (remember bmw60′s priceless comments?) and got 1,500 inquiries in 24 hours. As I said then,
Oh, and the DONC still gets the willies when it gets in close contact with actual representatives of THE WORKING CLASS! EWWWW! I see poor people. YUCK! Why can’t they just go to the dentist for crying out loud? We don’t really have to associate with those freaks do we? (Great way to appeal to voters, Guys).
Yup, that’s them — our fearless leaders. Trashing and degrading every person who looks like us, thinks like us, or is disadvantaged in any way (not including being black — for obvious reasons, the DONC could NOT afford to throw black people under the bus this time (but if you’re black, don’t get comfy; Howard, Barack, and ACORN do NOT like you. They never intended to help you, and they never will. ACORN is a scam, just like obama and his upper middle-class (pretty much all-white male) backers, and they’ve perpetrated their fraud on you, at your expense.)).
Dare to disagree with or oppose The One? Be prepared for an onslaught unmitigated by decency, inclusive principles, or restraint of any kind. We’ve catalogued the insults and degradation many times here on this blog: the comments that cursed our loved ones to die in botched back-alley abortions, the threats of righteous violence if obama loses, the by-now toothless accusations of racism (yet they still sting). We’ve been called witches, bitches, and cunts — frequently and publicly. We watched how they portrayed Hillary, and we documented their pornographic degradation of Sarah Palin. (“my black brothers will gang rape Sarah Palin,” “fucking whore,” “dominatrix,” “pom-pom girl,” “sex slave,” and of course “cunt” over and over again).
And now they savage S. Joseph Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber. Even Joe Biden is doing it. We’re told he’s stupid, ugly, racist, poor, dumb, a fraud, and a liar. He’s a guy so he probably won’t be gang-raped or figuratively f**cked by teh Boiz. He probably won’t be photo-shopped with a ball gag in his mouth being whipped by Markos in drag. That probably will never happen. Maybe Maureen Dowd will devote a column to how she’d never have sex with someone so poor. But probably the most humiliating thing he’ll have to live down is Diane Sawyer reminding him and millions of us that Joe the Plumber will probably NEVER make enough money to qualify for obama’s tax increases.
What a strange, strange beast the Democratic Party has become.
This is the new DNC, and it’s why we call them the DONC. They don’t represent us, our values, or our experiences. In fact, they represent everything we always thought we hated about Republicans. As Pumas, our eyes were opened back in February. We’ve known for a LONG time what the rest of the country is just learning — that the Democratic Party has been hijacked by a shrieking band of character assassins and thugs.
ACORN and obama thought they could get away with trashing our voters and our democratic processes in order to win. They succeeded in starting a fire, that’s for sure. But it’s not the one they meant to start.
As the evidence of massive fraud and ugly tactics mounts in every swing state in the last 3 weeks of this horrible election, the DONC will soon learn that most people hate arsonists. That instead of destroying their victims, obama and the DONC have ignited us to unite and fight. Not on their terms however, and not with their tools. We are fighting fire with water — the powerful and quiet undercurrent of decency, good will and courage which connects all average citizens and revitalizes our sense of community and shared purpose.
Our silent revolution will be quick and devastatingly effective. It will take place on Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 beginning at 7am and ending at 9pm eastern. The only weapon we will use is a ballot, and there will be no casualties. We’re Pumas. We work quietly and without fuss or fanfare.
And once the Obama Movement’s incendiary assault on our voters has been permanently doused on that day, and he and his minions have been swept back to Chicago for good, we’ll begin the hard work of rebuilding our party and the reputation the BOIZ so recklessly tried to destroy.
It will be a long, difficult job. But there is no way in HELL that I’ll give up.
Every time I see a picture or description from DEMOCRATS of Sarah or Hillary in pornographic degradation I think of my daughters and a repulsive image of their heads photoshopped into a porn picture pops into mine. This is what will happen to them if you don’t fight, the voice in my head tells me.
And so, I’ll fight. Alongside every one of us who believes we have more in common with Joe the Plumber than Joe the Senator. More in common with the mother of a child with Down’s Syndrome than the father of the Daily Kos hate machine. And more in common with a brave, young Wellesley College graduate who dared to dream she could be president than with a cowardly, young Harvard graduate who dared to believe he might be the Messiah.
Twenty days left in this nightmare campaign, Folks. Between today and November 4th things are apt to get heated and tense. We’ve all had enough. Enough of the pandering, the lying, the insults, the denial of reality, the indifference of the media and our leaders, the Palin porn, the sexist onslaught, and enough of Barack Obama. Why isn’t he back in Chicago already, where he belongs? I believe the country is well and truly sick of him.
Obama is an empty suit in love with the sound of his own voice and the shape of his own naive ideas. As Riverdaughter said this morning, Obama has permanently sidelined Hillary Clinton’s political career. She will likely not seek national office again, and the ONLY reason is that he willfully and viciously kneecapped her during the primaries. McCain did the right thing last night in confronting Obama about the sexist and racist attacks on him, Sarah Palin, and even Hillary Clinton. I won’t hold my breath waiting to see if the MSM addresses the issue, but it was a good and honorable thing for McCain to do. Obama, of course, sputtered and muttered a response that made him look more guilty and smug than ever.
McCain is wrong on health care, but who cares? The treasury is empty — the country is broke and feels broken. There will be no will and no wherewithal to adequately address the health care mess this time around. And Obama is wrong about everything. Because he’s a liar and a panderer. His platform looks pretty good on paper, but that’s all it is — paper. His tax cuts are actually tax credits, an important difference, but he assumes we’re all idiots and won’t know the difference. He has NO plan for education reform (maybe he’ll hire Bill Ayers to run the public schools even deeper into the ground). And his foreign policy is an incoherent shambles of nice ideas and lofty ideals. Spare me.
The Obama Movement is in love with its own image of itself — as youthful, hopeful, shiny, and new. They remind me of the young Bernie and Bill — privileged, pampered, petulant babies, over-educated and underinformed.
Meet the new brats. Same as the old brats.
Meanwhile, like Jo up there (the 21st Century reincarnation of Rosie), it’s our job to do the WORK now, just like always. We have 20 days to do everything we can to keep the King of the Brats out of the White House.
We can do it!
Here are some ways:
1. Order flyers from Freddie Brown. This latest batch of 20,000 will mean over SIXTY THOUSAND Puma flyers will have been distributed all across the country — in restaurants, malls, Home Depots and parking lots. That’s a lotta flyers! Just send your name and address to fred08puma@gmail.com and you’ll receive 100 full-color flyers in your mailbox in a matter of days!
2. Call Jennifer Brunner and tell her to STOP ACTING LIKE KATHERINE HARRIS! We’re Democrats damnit — we believe in FAIR elections. Call today and demand that she abandon her appeal to NOT VERIFY the new voter registrations. What on earth is she thinking?Contact info: email; questions@jenniferbrunner.com
phone; (614) 255-4255, fax; (614) 488-4327
3. Help Heidi Li get the Denver Group’s new ad on TV during the World Series. Every little bit helps — please contribute if you can HERE.Oh, and read Heidi’s take on Obama’s commitment to a woman’s right to privacy HERE — it’s excellent.4. Be wonderful to each other. I’m serious. We are ALL on our last nerve here and are feeling tetchy and tense. Be gentle and kind to each other — don’t nitpick, needle, or whine. Let’s keep our backs down and our feathers unruffled. We really are all in this together. We don’t all think exactly the same way about everything. That is our STRENGTH. But it is a vulnerable strength, one that can be damaged by harshness and unfriendliness. The MOST important thing we can do in the next three weeks is to stay United and Active as FRIENDS.5. Order flyers from Freddie Brown. send an email to fred08puma@gmail.com with your name and street address. (Did I mention this already?)
If you had purchased $1,000 of AIG stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.
With Fannie Mae, you would have $16.50 left of the original $1000.
With Freddie Mac, you would have less than $5.00 left.
If you had purchased $1,000 of WaMu stock you would have $49.00 left.
If you had purchased Lehman Brothers, you would have nothing left.
But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for recycling, you would have $114 to hide under your mattress.
Pass the bottle.

“The Lady of Shalott is a magical being who lives alone on an island upstream from King Arthur’s Camelot. Her business is to look at the world outside her castle window in a mirror, and to weave what she sees into a tapestry. She is forbidden by the magic to look at the outside world directly. The farmers who live near her island hear her singing and know who she is, but never see her.
The Lady sees ordinary people, loving couples, and knights in pairs reflected in her mirror. One day, she sees the reflection of Sir Lancelot riding alone. Although she knows that it is forbidden, she looks out the window at him. The mirror shatters, the tapestry flies off on the wind, and the Lady feels the power of her curse.
An autumn storm suddenly arises. The lady leaves her castle, finds a boat, writes her name on it, gets into the boat, sets it adrift, and sings her death song as she drifts down the river to Camelot. The locals find the boat and the body, realize who she is, and are saddened. Lancelot prays that God will have mercy on her soul.” [source]
Building here on a comment I left at Riverdaughter’s place a little while ago about the bomb Anglachel threw at Riverdaughter. Puma PAC was mere collateral damage in Anglachel’s beautiful mind, as we were always beneath contempt, but the attack on Riverdaughter really sticks in my craw.
In the context of a political battle, the term “ally” is neither a figurative nor a metaphorical term. It’s the real deal meaning of the word. I stand up beside Riverdaughter because SHE CAN’T DO THIS ALONE. She needs our help; just as sure as we need hers.
This political battle INSIDE the Democratic Party is NOT happening in our heads, on paper, or in a virtual reality. It is happening on the ground — in the real world. In parking lots; at rallies; at family gatherings; at voter registration tables; in classrooms; at water coolers etc, etc.
The final battle will take place in the ballot booth on November 4th — the realest place in the world in a Democratic Society.
The intellectuals who want to believe they can guide the direction and outcome of this civil war had better get out of their own theoretical heads and face the troops.
Anglachel claims to know the minds and hearts of the Trumaniacs in the Democratic Party, but she doesn’t seem to like to look at our faces.
With a Ph.D. in political science I believe I could weave a tapestry of thoughtful political insight similar to Anglachel’s in terms of subtlety and complexity. I could read books of history and studies of social behavior and thread their themes into strands of logical beauty, perhaps even with a twist of rhetorical flair. I don’t know, seeing as I do not have a Ph.D. in political science (or in anything else for that matter — still waiting for that college diploma to clear the Accounts Receivable desk at UMass Lowell). But I bet I COULD love the world from a tower. I bet I COULD recreate an image of reality from the fascinating pictures reflected in the books that I love.
Anglachel is a knowledgable person. I’ve read her posts with interest and pleasure — she’s insightful and enlightening, and her writing has helped clarify and frame my own thoughts and convictions.
But honestly? I’ve learned a lot more about what it means to be a Trumaniac from the people here.
What’s it like to be a liberal lesbian living in a redneck Texas town? I don’t know — should I ask Anglachel or TexasTigress?
What’s it like to be a minority who works her fanny off in a successful business that she founded and whose workforce is comprised almost entirely of minorities from a different culture? I don’t know — should I ask Anglachel or FreddieBrown?
What’s it like to be a feminist with a professional career who also happens to be a Hillary supporter and stone, cold blind? I don’t know — should I ask Anglachel or Mary Joe?
What’s it like to be an 86 year old grandpa who tracks down media and government contacts with a grandchild on his lap? I don’t know — should I ask Anglachel or Goalucard?
What’s it like to be a black man in Washington D.C. who supports Hillary to the bitter end and will NOT vote for Obama? I don’t know — should I ask Anglachel or Ario?
You get the picture. As I’ve said before many times, I could go on and on.
But I won’t. I’ll follow Heidi Li’s wise advice and try to shift the terms of the debate AND the battle. Rather than defend ourselves against baseless and reckless insults, let’s DO something.
Help get Heidi Li’s ad on the air. If she can raise another $1,000 she’ll be broadcasting THIS AD immediately. Help her out HERE.
And please try to do everything you can from the list on our Daily Update, below.
Meanwhile, a parting image from my un-credentialed mind. This is another portrait of Lady Shalott, one that depicts her AFTER she faced the REAL world and her mirror cracked. She got into a boat and floated down the river with her eyes WIDE OPEN and her fate SEALED. That’s my pal Riverdaughter in that picture.

The members of Puma PAC were FAR more likely on Tuesday to want Congress to LET IT CRASH! than the folks who responded to Gallup. Apparently, we Pumacrats tend to think of the jokers on Wall Street as Monkeys in Fancy Pants; and we think of our leaders across the board as Organ Grinders.
Most of Gallup’s respondents (57%) wanted Congress to go back to the Drawing Board and come up with a new plan, while only 35% of our members did. HERE’s what Gallup found. And here’s what their graph looks like:
And here’s what we found in our first Puma PAC Poll:
Answer Text
Votes
%
No Bailout for Billionairz. Period.
366
55%
Back to the Drawing Board!
233
35%
Patch it up quick and pass it ASAP!
66
10%
SO, 55% of us say NO WAY to any Bailout for Billionairz, and 35% of us want Congress to go back to the Drawing Board and stop telling us the sky is falling. The losing proposition: Patch it Up Quick and Pass It ASAP! appealed to only 10% of Puma PAC members. That seems to be what Congress is in fact about to do, so if I do my arithmetic correctly, roughly 90% of us must be pretty unhappy with Congress right about now! Which all adds up! Because Gallup also found that the approval rating for how Nancy and Harry’s Congress is handling the financial crisis is about 40% — sharply divided along partisan lines.
82% of Republican voters disapprove of the Dems in Congress, and 86% of Democratic voters disapprove of the Repubs. Interestingly, Independents are are disapproving of each party pretty evenly — 69% disapprove of the Dems, and 73% of Independents disapprove of the Repubs. WOW. Congress is REALLY unpopular with Independents, and EVERYONE knows that it’s the Independents who decide Presidential elections.

Senate votes tonight on the Bailout Bill. Tune in and comment here during the debate and vote.
Senate bailout bill
The bill the Senate will vote on Wednesday will include measures that:
Allow Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to buy up to $700 billion in bad mortgage-related securities and other bad assets
Allow the Treasury Department to modify mortgage terms to help homeowners avoid foreclosure
Permit the government to receive equity in companies it helps so taxpayers get a share of any future profits
Restrict executive pay for companies aided by the program
Create an independent oversight board to oversee the Treasury Department program

Also, be sure to listen in to The Lion’s Share tonight on Puma United Radio (PURrrr!) at 8pm eastern. Sheri Tagg, Riverdaughter, and I will be discussing all the news of the day and week so far!

6. Let PBS know how you feel about hopelessly biased Gwen Ifill moderating tomorrow night’s VP debate. Comment HERE (be sure to type www.blog.pumapac.org into your comment so they know we’re not republicans), and contact PBS, DEMANDING a replacement for Ifill.

Oh, and in case you might be wondering if Gwen Ifill is, in fact, biased against Sarah Palin, check this out (thanks to votermom at the Confluence)
“Top lawmakers said the Senate proposal, worked out after a day of behind the scenes maneuvering, would include tax breaks for businesses and alternative energy and higher government insurance for bank deposits.”
Pointing out that these changes help Big Shots. Higher government insurance for bank deposits sounds like a good idea for regular people who may have more than $100,000 in savings, but you have to look a little deeper. People with more than $100k to deposit have ALWAYS been able to have the full amount of their deposits insured (up to as much as $50million). The way it’s done is your financial services company spreads your big deposits around to more than one bank, $100k in each. What this provision will do is make it easier for individual banks to accept more money from individual depositors — in other words help CAPITALIZE banks that are starving for cash. SO, I’m not saying it’s a bad idea, in fact it sounds like a fairly painless way to ease the liquidity parch for banks. It also brings FDIC limits into the 21st Century in terms of inflation. BUT, let’s not get tricked into thinking this is any sort of concession for the PEOPLE.
SO, call your Senators, as antifish reminded us last night. CALL CALL CALL. EMAIL EMAIL EMAIL. Tell them what you want them to do. It is MUCH more difficult to influence Senators than it is Reps. The Senators do NOT live in mortal fear of their constituents — it is just TOO difficult to dislodge a sitting Senator, and so they are very safe, much the worse for us. But just the same, CALL CALL CALL. EMAIL EMAIL EMAIL.

On a personal note, I have one of the posters we printed for Denver on the wall in my office (aka “the dining room”). All of the Pumas and friends signed it in different colored markers when they were at HQ. I look at the poster at least 100 times a day and I read a handful of names each time: Earlene from Jackson MO, Linda from Atlanta GA, Marji from California, Papau from Boston, and mesofree from somewhere! Wichita, Germany, Portales. What a week it was!
