The story of the Rosenbergs is very sad. Not least because of the two young children they left behind when they were executed. I am adamantly opposed to the death penalty in all cases. I’m glad Charles Manson is still alive and rotting in prison. I wish Timothy McVeigh were also still alive and forced to share a very small jail cell with him. That’s just me, though — I understand and respect the perfectly rational opinion that some crimes, like child murder or terrorism for examples, must be punished by death for the stability of society (I don’t agree, but I grant the logic of the argument).
Sarah Palin is a jingoist. She misrepresents and underestimates the complexity and the contradictions of the American experience and the American experiment in democracy. Like Michelle Obama, she has led (until quite recently in both cases) a narrowly focused and parochial life. When Bernie and Bill bombed the Pentagon they were WRONG, there is no question about that. But they were wrong in a historical and social CONTEXT. Placing your hand over your heart and BLESSING the Pentagon is either frighteningly mindless or frighteningly cynical Gov. Palin. Pumas who were there REMEMBER how it was. Many have eloquently shared their memories of that time and the anguished sense of nearly every American who struggled to think right, be right, and DO right in a situation that was utterly irreconcilable with a black and white model of right and wrong. And so, most every American who lived through those times was anguished, unsure, afraid, and sad.
That being said, if every Puma who plans to vote against Obama on November 4th can be called a racist without compunction, then I say every American who plans to vote FOR Obama on election day should be willing to have their patriotism questioned.

You might find it odd, but I don’t believe the death penalty is warranted in many cases of murder. Many murders are crimes of passion and the killer would never do it again. And wouldnt have had they not “snapped” They willl spend their life suffering from guilt.

I disagree with the statements that call Palin simple or any synonym. The more I listen and watch her the more I believe she is a global thinking and learning person. These people have a different point of view and it is often fresh and different. She always touches on about 4 seemingly different categories when asked a question. People think it is because she is dumb or programed, I think life and issues are that entwined for her. That is likely why she was able to work her way through problems that had persisted for years in Alaska. A lot of people don’t know what to do with global thinkers. I have had problems with them in the lab before because in the lab you do step 1, step 2, step 3, step 4, you NEVER do all the steps but in random order. So global thinkers cause trouble but you can redesign experiments at the start and that is what they are really good at because they experience life in a different way. However linear thinkers seldom appreciate global people. Palin is just a global thinker and learner in a primarily linear thinker world and the linear thinkers find her disorganized because she doesn’t restrict herself to their organization pattern.

like i said I am not a christian but I was raised Catholic and the concept of redemption is probably the thing that I remember being confounded by as a child. I have not been to a church in 25 yrs but I have seen fall down drunks and strung out heroin addicts come back from a hell inconcievable to me. For the last 18 months I have been taking care of a baby and every day I see how fragile she is and I worry so much about what can go wrong. So very many people never have anyone to look after them. Many children are subjected to infathomable abuse. As I watch my boom boom grow i know I have a responsibility, but I was given the ability to see that from my parents. I just don’t think a mentally healthy person ever wants to hurt another. So I in some ways am still a bleeding heart liberal even though I know want to own a gun(to protect boom) and am going to vote repuiblican

I’ve never liked the word “patriot”, in any of its forms.
I think it’s because I assosiated it with a certain political party whose symbols and positions I abhor, and who co-opted the word and turned it into something I couldn’t relate to…
then, last night, I received an email from someone and basically they described the ways in which they saw me as a patriot. They said I “have been acting so American, so damn straight American, so red-white-and-blue American”, and they said I was their American hero.
I was speechless because 1) I’ve never been accused of being a patriot, and 2) because “hero” wouldn’t ever enter my mind if I had to describe myself or any impact I’ve ever had on anyone.
But, the context, and explanation, sort of allowed me to own the compliment from that person. Today, I feel like a patriot because of that email. It allowed me to reclaim the meaning of the, upt o then, co-opted word/concept.
Don’t know why I’m telling you this… really…
maybe because I realize that we, PUMAS, really are the true patriots and American heroes.
Camille Paglia, while voting for Obama, respects Gov. Palin and recognizes her intellect—which is in contrast to those who are knee-jerk dismissive of Palin. I do agree with Paglia.

It’s affecting me on a day to day basis in that it syphons off energy worrying about others, our, collective “our” quality of life, and my freakin may never be retirement.
So it’s draining emotionally and energetically, but I’m not feeling it financially in any real way… yet.
Then again, aside form my mortgage, I don’t have any debt, I live relatively simply, I can easiliy entertain myself,
and I’m an introvert, so I don;t have a strong need to be with people or to participate in activities.
Regarding Post leading thread, I do not know whether to disagree with antifish, Murphy or both since it is not clear to me who wrote what. But, except for the true hero or true saint, everyone leads a ” narrowly focused and parochial life”, for the most part, except when circumstances , as we experience now, ask, demand, or entice us for reasons multiple and complex to look and act beyond our everyday concerns.
Stating a noble cause does not make that cause noble.
Being trapped in one’s own narrow gestalt of the world as terroists like Ayers and his wifeare and exalting that circumscribed petty bourgeois , yes, petty bourgeois gestalt to the level of the noble or that large enough to kill and call others to join does not make it noble either.
Palin is no more a jingoist than these two in that regard.
I do not question the patriotism of millions in this country because they support Obama. I question their ability and desire to take in that which requires more than a moment’s attention to discern. I question the lack of patience that discernment often requires and I both question and fear their naivte about the nature of truth, error, and the repercussions of both.
When humas refuse to submit to the unease that discernment of truth and error can often bring, they, like those in this country I describe, will eventually or soon enough experience the unbending power that ignorance can bring in the face of manipulative or evil intent.

I’m like you, I’m very mindful how I spend my money, I don’t live beyond my means, more on below my means. The only worry I have every month is my monthly expenses. Although I have plastic money, I don’t use it. I’m scared to death of owing money, I had a bad experience once. One time I bought something (5K) payable in one year. Oh my! It was the worst time of my life, I can’t sleep for one week. I end up paying for the whole amount in 30 days.
When the company I bought the item asked my I’m paying it right away when I have one year to do it; I said, “you’d make a lot of money with your interest, I have no plan of giving you my money.”
I am listening to Larry King Live that is on in the other room. He is saying that there is a lot of complaints from people about Palins cover in the Times. Something about the photo not being touched up.

CROWN POINT, Indiana (CNN) — More than 2,000 voter registration forms filed in northern Indiana’s Lake County by a liberal activist group this week have turned out to be bogus, election officials said Thursday.
An official enters the Las Vegas, Nevada, ACORN office, which is under investigation for alleged voter fraud.
The group — the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN — already faces allegations of filing fraudulent voter registrations in Nevada and faces investigations in other states.
And in Lake County, home to the long-depressed steel town of Gary, the bipartisan Elections Board has stopped processing a stack of about 5,000 applications delivered just before the October 6 registration deadline after the first 2,100 turned out to be phony.
“All the signatures looked exactly the same,” Ruthann Hoagland, a Republican on the board. “Everything on the card filled out looks exactly the same.”
The forms included registrations submitted in the names of the dead — and in one case, the name of a fast-food restaurant, Jimmy Johns. “ACORN, with its intent, perhaps was good in the beginning, but went awry somewhere,” LaSota said.
Over the past four years, a dozen states have investigated complaints of fraudulent registrations filed by ACORN. And the group has become the target of Republican attacks on voter fraud, a perennial GOP issue.
A subsidiary of the group was paid $800,000 by Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign to register voters for the 2008 primaries, and ACORN’s political wing endorsed Obama back in February. But Obama’s campaign told CNN that it “is committed to protecting the integrity of the voting process,” and said it has not worked with ACORN during the general election.
Brian Mellor, an ACORN attorney in Boston, said the group has its own quality-control process and has fired workers in the past — including workers in Gary. “We believe their purpose is to attack ACORN and suppress votes,” Mellor said. “We believe that by attacking ACORN, they are going to discourage people that have registered to vote with ACORN from voting.”
CNN was unable to reach ACORN officials in Gary and in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the group’s Indiana operation is based. Offices in both cities were empty when reporters visited.
Lake County elections officials have set aside all 5,000 of the ACORN-submitted applications in what Hoagland called the “fake pile” for later review. But she said every one will be reviewed before the election to make sure no legitimate voters are skipped.
There has been no evidence of voter fraud yet, because voters have yet to go to the polls. But elections officials say they will be sending their information to prosecutors, who will determine whether any investigation will begin.
“We have no idea what the motive behind it is,” she said. “It’s just overwhelming to us.”

I’m confused. There are so many legitimate reasons to dislike Obama and vote against him. He has a lot of policy positions written and and there’s no shortage of things to take issue with. He has a brief but well documented history rife with potential disagreements you could have. But as I come to this site (less frequently with time) it seems the bottom of the barrel is dug deeper and deeper. Thoughtful criticisms that might convince others are neglected — gratifying and visceral personal attacks are chosen instead despite the fact that they turn people off to the PUMA message.
For the PUMAs making over 250k a year, you might dislike his tax proposals.
Or you might find his proposed health policies lacking in comparison to Clinton’s.
Or his foreign policy positions on acting unilaterally in Pakistan might rub you the wrong way.
And perhaps you’ve read materials from his constitutional law class and extrapolated info about what kind of judges he may appoint — and they make you uneasy.
There are SO MANY compelling cases that you can still make to your family, your peers. But the high road is a hard trek to make when saddled with the weight of fear and desperation.
When I came here and saw a post that was nothing but comparing Axelrod to Hitler because of their mustaches, I was heartbroken. I figured the fatigue and worry had simply worn people down to accepting grotesque nazi jokes as legitimate commentary. I voiced my complaint, trying to be polite while articulating how sad it made me.
But today — I can’t condone insisting that my fellow citizens hate America by exercising their right to vote. It’s sick and I don’t understand how that helps anyone. If you’ve been called ignorant or racist because of your choice, you can let it galvanize your conviction or you can sink down to your enemy’s level and accuse them of having contempt for America.
History doesn’t lionize people who adopt the low road tactics of their enemies. It shines its spotlight on those that rise above on the strength of their convictions. Coretta Scott King didn’t pick up a rifle to shoot people for civil rights, lamenting “the other team started it!”
I’ve tried to straddle a line between cordial and nagging in speaking my conscience clearly and, i hope, politely. I just don’t know what to think at this point. I’m worried where the tone goes from here. There’s less than a month left and people are getting more angry and less clever — I’m scared of how far it might go.
Personally, I will vote against Obama to support a third party candidate. If we can get them above 5% so as to qualify for public financing next election the WHOLE LANDSCAPE changes! More voices to represent more people — a positive step in the right direction.
I’d like to challenge all of you to come up with a thoughtful and personal reason for your vote; something you can share with people in your life. Something they haven’t heard on the news before. A fresh idea that might sway their vote as well.
I’m sorry if you feel like I’m just browbeating from a soap box. Keep up the good fight — but leave the bad fight to the bad people.

Two stay-homes (or third party, write-in, etc) equals one vote for McCain. It’s just half as much help for McCain but still some help.
If you want Obama to lose all 57 states, then watch the polls, and if your state is not a close race where McCain really NEEDS your vote, then voting third party can send a good message.
Sometimes it’s easier to persuade two people to stay home than persuade one person to vote for McCain.
A few people I know well who are life long democrats have told me they may not vote at all. I don’t hit them over the head with my philosophy but I have been telling them about Ayer et al for months. They thought I was a zealot, until last week. Planted the seed its upto McCain to get thier vote.

If nobama was really interested in the welfare of this country, he wouldn’t try to BUY the election, but campaign on equal grounds with John McCain. He knew darn well that he was going to reject the $84 million from the government for his campaign and that forced John McCain to stay with the $84 million. Why not donate some of that money to his “constituents” who are losing their homes due to foreclosure instead of paying all of that money for a half hour’s worth of tv. This was planned all along. And I am also becoming very disillusioned with Hillary. I bet that nobama doesn’t give her any job in his administration if he heaven forbid gets in. And if he does, he probably will put a gag on her. She will never get to be president and at this point, she should consider her country over her party. Joe Lieberman did exactly that.

And he referred me to this Sept. 18 post, Obama Throwing Papua Under the Bus, which apparently was not read by enough people. He instructed me to read it carefully. So I did, and here’s the upshot.
According to Martin’s post, U.S. Congressman Eni Faleomavaega, an outspoken critic of Indonesia’s oppression of Papua and a Barack Obama supporter (and Superdelegate), visited Indonesia in July 2007, with the purpose of “acquiring any and all documentation or photographs of a young Barry Soetoro.” Martin claims that a substantial sum of money was exchanged. He writes:
The challenge of course was securing Indonesian government records potentially damaging to Barack Obama’s candidacy for the US presidency as well as other records pertaining to a young Barry Soetoro and his family wouldn’t be so easy to acquire and secure..
“In the end,” according to Martin, “everyone got what they wanted, all to the detriment of the West Papuans”:
…In a show of faith, Barack Obama’s childhood school would be one of the very first beneficiaries of this outpouring, receiving thousands of dollars to upgrade the school and for the purchase of computer equipment…
..The only issue of contention Faleomavaega would face from the Indonesian government would be the issue of West Papua. In the end, it was simply a give and take situation. The Obama campaign needed assistance from the Indonesian government and the Indonesian government wanted a free hand in Papua.
Later concerning Faleomavaega’s meeting, Indonesian presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal would have this to say: “One thing that is sure is that Faleomevaega’s visit here has changed his views about Indonesia. It has made him realize this country is so vast and complex it cannot be reduced by the Papua issue…” Dino said Faleomavaega was known as a US Congress member who often commented on the Papuan issue but now he had changed his views. “He now sees that Papua is inalienable part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.”
Faleomevaega’s and meeting with Indonesia’s president regarding West Papua and his subsequent flipflop on supporting West Papau’s right to self-determination is something that you might think would warrant at least a press release on the congressman’s website, but there is nothing, nor is there any mention on the House Subcommittee’s site. No press release, nothing, not even a mere mention of his trip to Indonesia. “
I emailed McCain that since Nobama keeps referring to the last eight years as the Bush/McCain administration (like he is in the adminstration) then he should say to Nobama after he says it again at the last debate, “Since you keep saying that, even though I am not in the administration and am not responsible for Bush’s decisions, and even though you throw out that I vote for him 90% of the time, but you vote with him 88%, I am going to from now on call your possible administration “Obama, Pelosi, Reid” since there is a possibility because the demoncrats have blamed everything on the republicans that you will have the majority in the house AND senate. That will be your new name because if you get elected, your entire radical left wing agenda (because you are the most left wing candidate in history) will be greenlighted by your fellow left wing democrats, including Supreme Court choices.”
That should scare some people out of voting for this socialist nut bag.

I am DAMMED ANGRY at what this election has come to!!! For the first time in my life (and I have prayed and prayed about this…) I CAN SAY THAT I HATE OBAMA, I LOATH HIM and all that he represents. I detest and get sick to my stomach when I hear his voice! I was pretty disgusted by the 2000 elections and turned off the news for several YEARS literally….but I have to tell you…this election is beyond my intellectual comprehension.
I pray about this… because I have very VERY negative thoughts about these words “OBAMA’s CHANGE”.

This is the line of reasoning that currently is being used to minmize left wing violence of the sixties or of any time. And it is why some people don’t care about Obamas associations – they understand and “sympahthize withthis kind of violence.
Angry hateful violence is wrong regardless of ideology or social context. I was angry about the Vietnam War and civil rights issues and the law and order society of my adolescence, but I marched and spoke out and voted and wrote letters to the editor. I did not advocate killing my parents (who were of course a product of their social context) or blowing up judges houses.
Why is left wing violence so sympathetic to people? And right wing violence so abhorent?
P.S. I oppose the death Penalty in all cases – no context justifies it.

I agree. I have been praying and have my children praying. My biggest fear is that so much corruption will go on and who is there to check it? The republicans will not have even a fillibuster number in either house, if the “Fairness Doctrine” gets reenacted Fox will be shut down or at least tamed and there is talk on the internet of Obama’s minions (google, aol, etc) shutting down websites deemed “offensive” and charging people to open websites (which would I guess be scrutinized first). There will be NO outlet to get real news. It will be like Cuba and N Korea where the people know what the government WANTS them to know.
I am truly scared. If we think that in 4 yrs we could get out of it, think of it, if they own the media who will run against that and how would they ever get the truth out?

The unvetted reality of this situation is that the MAJORITY of Americans do not fall into these Bell Curve extreems in the political arena and yet , there isn’t a candidate running that is reflective of the interest or belief systems of moderate Americans . My point is WTF ?
I have been trying hard to sort out all of this. I don’t think I really want to believe what I am seeing. This is my analysis:
Obama is a socialist. He has been part of an underground movement since his youth. He probably holds dual citizenship in Kenya and Indonesia. He has hidden his college records and his activities during those years because there is evidence of his socialist leanings and his dual citizenship.
He linked up with Bill Ayers and others in the Chicago area because it was convenient. They found that he was a good student of Alinsky, and could work well in the ‘community organizer’ role. He was a good speaker. They raised money and assisted him into getting into Columbia and Harvard. Affirmative action really worked for him, and they were very successful in promoting him into those educational venues.
Once out of school, he became a valuable assett. They decided to assist him in his and their pursuits. He started small, but with a vengence. He had enough ruthlessness in him to run roughshod over everyone in his way until he got into the state senate. In 1996, with the help of the socialist party in Chicago, he made it to the state senate. He had been an organizer and the lawyer for ACORN, and through that and other similar organizations, he managed to put in place a national web to help elect him to the Presidency.
The ultra left wing of the Democratic party became very unhappy with the centrists. The Clintons were targeted by the left wing, even during Monica Gate. Hillary was right, there was a vast conspiracy, but it was on both the right and the left. Her own party plotted against her, laying the groundwork to push the party far, far, far to the left. Obama was their willing participant.
The mortgage meltdown is a means to take over the finance industry by the socialists. Dodd, Biden, and others have long viewed the Chinese system of banking as a model that we might be able to incorporate somewhat into our system. That system is mostly governmentally owned. The socialist wing thinks we have to control banking to control corporations. They are partly right, but to take over the banks will push us farther into socialism than most of us want to go.
At this time the socialists have virtually taken over the Democratic party. It is really not the party of our youth. It is the party of ACORN, Ayers, Alinsky, and Obama. They will use any means to get what they want. The ultimate goal is a take over of the country from within. The only thing standing in their way is John McCain and PUMA!

The last time people have been this fired up was when Kennedy ran. Obama is NO Kennedy, believe me, what I mean is a black man running and a woman as VP is exciting! Maybe it is just a wake up call for us to fight for this country from the corruption that has been going on. How long have we sat and done nothing because it ‘didn’t effect us’? There are many groups that have sprung up because of this (like the awesome PUMAs!) that have galvanized people to think and do something about it.
