Nothing will happen EXCEPT Congress have to work ALL EVENING to revise Bailout Bill, remove earmarks and golden parachute for CEOs. Then tomorrow they’ll vote again. This is typical democrat tactic, they wouldn’t give their members time to review the whole bill, but expect all of them to vote right away. Well, 94 democrats voted against it. If all democrats voted for it, the bill will pass without a problem. Even Pelosi, Frank and that other Bozo from Chicago can’t rally all their party members to vote for the said bill. I copy & paste the letters into a word doc, print to fax, put in the number and awaaaay it goes.

They will work this all out, but I don’t believe for one minute if the bailout was passed today it would have been the solution to this. Paulsen said himself he knows this is a risk and has no idea if this is enough and will fix this. It was a bad solution from the beginning. Why should taxpayers bail out wall street and
institutions who walked away with millions of dollars? We are standing up for what is right. We are want the government to do the right thing and that is not to bail these crooks out.
They will come up with a solution. Don’t panic.
I don’t have anything invested in the market, but that doesn’t mean I’m not concerned for those who do. What it does mean, though, is that I can sit back and wait – a bit more calmly – for the right bill to be put on the floor for a vote.
I just wish things had been handled; that warnings had been heard and acted upon. The Pelosies of the world have a lot of nerve blaming this on anyone except the Dems that blocked legislation that would have allowed more oversight.

I am not surprised by Pelosi’s mouth. Its all about politics. My question is if this bill is so great why don’t the Democrats and Nobama pass it. I am not wealthy but the little bit of retirement I have is in the stock market so this is tough to watch. I have felt uneasy about this bill all week-end and I am not comfortable with the government taking over the financial system. They mess up everything they touch!
I absolutely believe in America. If not, I wouldn’t be a PUMA. I would be burying my head somewhere.
But I have watched my 401k go down by 30% in the last year. It took me 30 years to save and I lost 30% in one year. I have the highest credit rating possible. And I am proud of that fact, but when I had to get a loan for my son’s college, that didn’t matter. And when I had to take out a home equity to buy a car, that rate went up also.
All of this effects everything we do.

I’m glad it failed – it was a flawed bill. We get CRAP when enough people aren’t allowed to read a bill before voting on it. I think it’s good that the brakes have been put on, before we get another stinker dumped on us as the “Sarbanes-Oxley” bill was.
SOX costs and continues to cost companies tons of $$$. It was a knee-jerk reaction also and now everyone wants to repeal it.
No one has really “lost” money today – unless you freaked out and sold your stock as it was sliding down the abyss. The market will and always has climbed steadily upwards.
We’ll get through this – as long as people don’t freak out. Hang in there guys!

Why does each generation have to learn over and over again that investing in the stock market is a gamble. You only invest what you can afford to lose. There are many, many more stable investments. Just because the market is up today doesn’t mean it will always be up. Please, learn from history (by the way they do not teach you that particular history lesson in colleges today).

True…..never invest in the stockmarket what you can’t afford to lose. Four years investment in the market is SHORT TERM. Although the stockmarket is falling right now, I’m not worried. I’m in for the long haul, the money I put it in the market for my retirement, is my extra that i’ve set aside. I understand the market goes up and down, natural disaster can cause the stockmarket to hit a nosedive. I consider this a BIG CORRECTION in the market, majority of stocks out there are overly inflated. Imagine a stock with a par value of $1.00 and sold for $86/share.
I do believe they will come up with a workable plan. And it will be a better and more sober one that the one they tried to stuff down the peoples’ throats today.

Assuming that only rich people are invested in the stock market is foolish. Today most people who are invested in 401k’s are invested through their work. That’s the only way their work will give them retirement money, it’s tied in with their salary. Those are the people this is hurting. I also feel bad for the parents who thought that their children were going to be able to go to college. They will not be able to get loans for college. Anybody wanting to buy or sell a home right now, tough luck, all credit has been formally cut off. Also, hope your car doesn’t break down soon, all credit has been cut off, unless you have cash, you can’t buy a car.

Anyone with a pension may lose part or all their pension – even if it’s a state or government pension. It depends on how the pension fund invested the pension money. Pensions are generally invested in the stock market.
It’s happened, I know of one major steel company that lost a lot of their pension fund in 2000. All the people who worked there lost their ENTIRE pensions. So now, all these elderly women I know – mostly widows of men who worked there – have nothing to live on but Social Security. Oh, and that’s next.
If you have nothing in the bank now, you will have even less. Cat food is 3/$1.
I am disappointed, I would expect PUMAs to know better, and to have more sympathy than what I’m seeing on this thread.

My husband just got put on a 3 day week. Some friends of his are on a 20 hour week already. Another plan similar to his has been working a 2 day week for the last 3 weeks.

I agree Newman. I’m fairly young, 45, so I have some time to regroup my loses & prepare for retirement, but I’m worried about how this will affect my parents. My dad is 75 and my mom is 70… both are retired. I’m sure their retirement took a huge hit today.
I lost my $80k job a year ago and have been working odd jobs while I try to get another job in my field. As a result I’ve had to use much of my savings just to make ends met. My car is broken, my house is on the market … I’m having a very hard time paying my basic bills. Thank God I have no credit card debt but I have a mortgage to pay, etc. I’m a single mom with one child and zero help from her father.

Rosh Hashana is the Jewish New Year, that is the beginning of the new spiritual year. This is like Christmass and Easter all rolled into one, as there are 10 days of contemplation and repentance between the new year and Yom Kippur, the day of attonement. This is a very prayerful time, and one where we all ask each other for forgiveness and start anew in trying to live a better life.
I think it is very poetically appropraite that the nation will be struggling with this while all of us who share the Jewish faith pray and contemplate. Perhaps it would be a good thing if everyone joined us in this effort to reconcile and improve?

However, where were they during the buildup to this crisis? They had ample warning from John McCain and Alan Greenspan in 2005/6 and did nothing. They fought against regulatory reform of Freddie and Fannie which lead to the root cause of America’s financial crisis on wallstreet. Their incompetence is obscene!
Now we look to them to solve the problem? With their record, its no wonder they’re stumbling all over themselves to blame the Republicans. Even Bush tried to pass regulatory reform in 2003 and the democrats blocked him.
Let’s chalk this catastrophe up to Obama’s good judgment? Obama is ready to RUN away, not ready to accept responsibility, and definitely not ready to lead, not now, not ever!! Can we trust Obama with our economic security? NO. Obama tried to push the blame for his bad decision and other democrats onto John McCain. BOTH Hillary Clinton and John McCain tried since late 2005 to get bills through. They never made it to the floor. Fannie and Freddie were FURTHER deregulated in 2006, by Dodd, Biden, and Obama. The first sign that the housing market was in trouble started with an audit in late 04 and 05 that showed Fannie and Freddy each had about a $20 billion deficit. That spured Hillary and McCain to work on some kind of correction. The three fools, Biden, Dodd, and their student Obama pushed through a bill that allowed the ‘communtiy service’ organizations to write even more bad paper and sell it to Fannie and Freddy!
Of course Dodd and Biden had been in the pocket of banks for a number of years.
By the way, did we all know that one of the execs of a failed institution actually made $63 million last year? I want it back……………………………..

Just got back home from my business appointment. I see everything exploded on the market since I left. I heard that congress is taking off until thursday now? ..what what would be the sense of THAT?
A side-note… my democrat senator (Steve Kagen) who is a STRONG Obama supporter, said in our paper today that he gave back the money he had gotten in from Fannie….. sorry, but I think he’s another one that really needs to “go down in flames” in November. Unfortunately, he (as an allergist) BOUGHT his senate seat last time around, and will probably do so again.

I’m not an expert in government, but if I had to lay the blame for this mess, I’d pin it on the committees that oversee Freddie and Fannie. Especially, if Fannie and Freddie were set up with something equivalent to an Enabling Act, as the administrative agencies like FDA and FAA are. Joe Blow congressman really has only marginal effect on the agencies, unlike the members of the committees, who govern and supposedly provide oversight over the agencies. I’m sure that Fannie and Freddie enacted regulations and provisions well outside of the origiginal enabling charter.
This would explain why Fannie and Freddie were never fixed. The proposed bills to fix Freddie and Fannie, such as the one by McCain, went to the committee in charge of Fannie and Freddie but never got out. Since we’d had a republican congress all these years until 2006, it also explains why majority republicans could not affect legislation. That said, everyone on that damn finanical committee should be fired, period.

It would be profitable for manufacturing companies to start their business again in USA. It would be bad news for China who rely in the US market for exportation. They have to sell their goods at a higher price, therefore, Americans will go back to manufacturing again. This problem will curtail our hunger for exportation, buying cheap products from China that are not designed to last for over 2 years, that’s why they’re sold cheap here in USA. Products made in China is not known for durability.

THE BAILOUT PLAN
Listen to the Democrats talk about the economy. Let’s take Rahm Emanuel yesterday afternoon for instance. I listened to him rattle on for about 10 minutes talking about how the free market failed and it is time for more government. Admittedly, if I had an anti-capitalist Marxist leading my party’s ticket in the election I’d be ranting against the free market also.
Now some of you are going to take what I say here and mutter “yeah, yeah, yeah” under your breath. You’re just absolutely sure I’m dead wrong. But perhaps you might just give it a little study on your own. Maybe I can just cause some of you who are buying the Democrat party line with a newspaper article. This is from The New York Times dated September 30, 1999. The headline is “Fannie Mae Eases Credit to Aid Mortgage Lending.” If you’re just to stubborn to click on the link and read the story … let me just share the first two paragraphs with you:
“In a move that could help increase home ownership rates among minorities and low-income consumers, the Fannie Mae Corporation is easing the credit requirements on loans that it will purchase from banks and other lenders.
The action, which will begin as a pilot program involving 24 banks in 15 markets — including the New York metropolitan region — will encourage those banks to extend home mortgages to individuals whose credit is generally not good enough to qualify for conventional loans. Fannie Mae officials say they hope to make it a nationwide program by next spring.”
Fannie Mae, as you may know, is not a purely private sector enterprise. Its’ called a GSE … a Government Sponsored Entity. Both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were doing all they could to back up the banks and lending institutions who were making these subprime, almost worthless loans. No lender is going to make a loan that they feel is a mistake unless there is someone out there to back them up. The entities backing them up were Fannie and Freddie – and they were doing so on instructions from their controllers on Capitol Hill.
Remember, too, that John McCain tried in 2005 to enact a bill that would bring some oversight to Fannie and Freddie. Again – you’re going to give me that “yeah, right” response … but that bill was stopped cold by a Democrat solid party line vote. Again … do your own research. But here we have Rahm Emanuel blaming the free market for our current problems — completely ignoring the government role in enabling the bad mortgages and blocking reform. Funny how we don’t read much about this in the mainstream media.

In my part of Wisconsin there IS no gas shortage…. I take it that there IS some other parts of the country? Why? Was it due to damage from one or more of the hurricanes???
Now this is what our Congress needs to do. Take Hillary’s suggestion and freeze all adjustable mortgages at 6% for 3 years so less people will default. Extend generous unemployment benefits nation wide for 18 months. Put money into retraining programs for laid off workers. Start a bunch of infrastructure construction projects to put the people who will not be building houses back to work and make our nation stronger. To hell with trickle down economic policies, we need trickle up policies for once.
I pay more attention to Donald Trump evaluation what is going on right now in the market, than this text book so called “economic experts”.

Banking wasn’t the only industry to get a hand from Congress this weekend. The Senate on Saturday sent President Bush a spending bill that includes up to $25 billion in loan guarantees to help Detroit automakers retool their factories and develop technologies to reduce vehicle emissions and increase fuel efficiency.
That amounts to a subsidy for such products as hybrid vehicles and plug-in electric cars.
The measure followed months of lobbying by Detroit and the Michigan delegation. When executives of the Big Three automakers met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Politico’s David Rogers called it “continued pressure on government to intercede in the troubled economy.”
The Detroit Free Press reported that it is “the largest federal aid ever offered to the U.S. auto industry.” The loan payments are deferred for five years, so the cost to taxpayers is $7.5 billion, AP reported.
This is the bill that allows a ban on offshore oil drilling to expire. The House had passed it earlier, and President Bush has said he would sign it.
Newsweek.com called it “The Next Bailout.” Automakers lauded the move in releases quoted by Bloomberg News. Ford called the legislation a “key enabler to Ford’s plan to pursue advanced technologies.” General Motors said the loans “will help speed the transition to cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles.”

This is just too much money to throw something together. The market being down today is typical of the situation. It will go right back up when we get a workable plan. I’m sorry for everybody (including myself) whose 401k’s and IRA’s went down, but all of the plans that I know about offer options on plans, so some of the responsibility has to be our own. Most plans have options that we choose how we want our money managed, such as guarantees that the actual money earned will not lose value, but the rate of interest for growing is much less than an agressive plan which offers more risk but much higher returns. Being in the stock market in any form is a risk and all financial experts tell us to use only “disposable income” when going into it. I’m always heartened to remember the simple wisdom of Sam Walton who said market losses are only a paper loss, meaning that tomorrow it will likely turn around. It’s only a loss if you withdraw the funds. Let’s wait for a bill that will really help all of us.

Yes Dodd and Biden are among top receivers of money from the mortgage people and the banks, and the credit card companies! Obama seems to have been their student, as he has been gifted with more per year from these entities than any other candidate!
The gist of this is: A free market is predatory. A too tightly controlled market is ineffective. What is one to do? Set appropriate guidelines and keep to them!
In reality, it takes a mix of socialism and capitalism to make a truly effective market work. In the last 25 years, the free market has been pumping our faulty and flawed results. To have an executive make $63 million in a year that his company is failing is not a free market.
I work in a small business that is a free market. If I don’t turn a profit, I don’t get paid. Why can’t we make those execs earn their money?

Gas supplies took a major hit because refineries in the Houston area are not up to full capacity yet. One pipeline in particular that normally produces 100 million gallons of gas is still not up to full capacity.
This is just one of many reasons why we need more refineries built.

McCain has been taking a terrible beating in the polls because of his loud noises but complete absence of leadership on the Wall Street welfare proposal. (I will have a negative column later today on “Grandpa” McCain’s need for a new debate team.)
Monday morning, earlier today, after supporting the concept of a bailout on Friday, McCain was attacking the bailout again. Where does he rally stand? Has McCain been inoculated with “Obama fever?” Obama is unable to give an honest, clear answer; McCain is heading in the same direction. John Kerry may be making a comeback. McCain was for the bailout bill (on Friday) before he was against it again on Monday.
Am I the one who is missing a clear message?
Today, however, I would like to send a clear message to McCain. I hope he wakes up in time to get it: Either stop claiming you are a leader, or be a leader and vote “No” on the Wall Street giveaway law.
The new 110-page version of the Wall Street Protection and Preservation Act is a complete capitulation to Wall Street. Greed has won again.
Big talk up front; small acts behind the scenes. Lobbyists take over the day after. Washington wins, the people lose. No surprise there. Oh, and McCain loses as well on November 4th.
Congress will pop and toot about the brave steps taken, but all of these steps are discretionary, effectively beyond judicial review, and all of them vest complete power in the Treasury Secretary (“TS”) to do whatever he wants however he wants.
Equity for Americans? The TS decides how much to ask for, if any, equity or other return for our risks. Of course, this is a lobbyist’s dream law. Because after the print on the statute is dry, the lobbyists get to go to work to lobby the Treasury Secretary and bureaucrats and political appointees working under the TS.
Is there any doubt the lobbyists will win back in private what they lost in public? No doubt at all.
“Mark to market?” Kiss that good by. First on a temporary, and then on a permanent basis. Wall Street dislikes “mark to market” because without it they can bury their failures under piles or obfuscation and econometric models. Bonuses anyone?
Speaking of big pay and bonuses? The TS can act, if he wants to. Sure, “Wall Street Paulsen” is going to strip his buddies of paychecks. Sure. All statutory limits and strict standards are stripped out of the bill. Wall Street wins! The chumps on Main Street take the onus; Wall Street thieves get the bonus.
The Wall Street bailout is the type of disgraceful special interest Christmas Tree that McCain has said he is against. Indeed, he has fought against many of them, in the past. Swell, but what are you going to do with the biggest special interest Christmas tree in history? Vote No. Tell the crooks to come back with an honest law with strict standards that leave no discretion for interpretation and leave no opening for the lobbyists to swarm over the Treasury department the day after.
McCain claims he is putting “Country First” while he dodders and dithers and contradicts himself on a daily basis. Unless he starts acting like a real leader, he is about to put the country in Barack Obama’s hands, and inflict an incalculable injury on the people McCain claims to be serving. It’s time for Grandpa McCain to wake up and start being President McCain.

A couple of weeks ago they said they were to do that as soon as their current supply of summer blend is depleted. There is usually less gas when that happens, tho we usually don’t notice the switchover. Apparently we are this year. But the supply should be back to normal soon, in my opinion anyway.
My my, FL Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings issued a statement Monday indicating that he regrets saying that “gun toting” Sarah Palin “don’t care too much” about Jews and blacks.

I just got home. Has anyone attempted to correlate the 95 No vote Democrats to their fiscal and social programs agendas? I would think a number of the Blue Dogs…moderate to fiscally conservative Dems might not have gone along as well as members of the Black Caucus and other ultra liberals(whatever that means these days..il.e. would have wanted some other deal in the bill or off the bill from somewhere else for money for nonprofit housing advocates, like Acorn and others.
I am going to try to correlate the No votes in this manner if no one else has done that yet. I simply want to know!
I live in Atlanta. The gas shortage here has to do with losing our gas supplier, due to the expiration of the contract, and Govenor Purdue didn’t sign something??
I think it had to do with suspending EPA restrictions temporarily. A lady explained it to me today, but I didn’t quite understand it all.

Southern Gas shortage update
Well folks, I’m here in Greenville SC. We had stations running out of gas on the Friday before Ike hit. There has not been much improvment since then.
This past Friday, I had to travel to 5 stations before I found one with gas. My parents found gas on Saturday but were restricted to a 10 gallon limit. The few stations that have gas have lines out into the street.
They say things are improving, but I’ve yet to see it. I have friends in Asheville, Charlotte, and Nashville who are having similar problems. The crappy thing is that at least here in Greenville, we don’t have public transportation so people have to have it, there is no alternative.

I tried the first bank holding company case at the Federal Reserve Board in 1973. I have watched great bankers such as Walter Wriston, and their bumbling successors such as Sanford Weil.
And I do not like what I see in Washington. Paulson claims he is bailing out Wall Street to save Main Street. But he is stealing banks that were built on Main Street and handing them over to enrich Wall Street. In the process, he has unnecessarily destroyed tens of billions of dollars of shareholder equity all across the United States. On Main Street.
After having pioneered consumer banking in the New York region, Citibank has a failed national consumer franchise. “Bank of America” is nominally still headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Have you seen the bank’s new “headquarters” on Sixth Avenueand Forty-Second Street in Manhattan? Take a look, and then tell me where the power will reside, and where the decisions will be made. Chase Bank? They got Paulson to wipe out Bear Stearns’ shareholders to reward Chase with an investment banking base.
Chase, Citi and BkAm are three peas in a pod: they charge consumers the highest fees and have the poorest customer service. Far from being “too big to fail,” they are “too big to succeed.” Main Street banking is on the verge of being strangled, and no one in Washington is standing up to fight back.
What penalty do the three giants pay for their failed or imperfect strategies? None whatsoever. Paulson is stealing tens of billions of dollars from the shareholders of other banks (Washington Mutual, Wachovia) to enrich the New York behemoths.
What a steal. Such a deal?

When the stock market crashed in 1929, it wasn’t just the wall street investors who lost, every person in America suffered. And they didn’t recover until the War.
It hurts main street first. The issue is one of perception. The word “bailout” vs. rescue. It is a rescue of the economy before what happened on wall street gets to main street.

Thank you for expressing your concerns with the problems in the financial sector and proposals to address them. On Monday, the House rejected the legislation, despite attempts that had been made to address criticisms, such as the elimination of funding for affordable housing.
A lot of Ohioans, including me, are angry at the thought of bailing out people who made a lot of money making bad business decisions that created problems in neighborhoods across Ohio. I agree that we need to avoid rewarding excessive risk taking. These institutions made unwise decisions, and taxpayers should not be expected to simply cover their losses.
On September 20th, Treasury Secretary Paulson sent a proposal to Congress that would have given him almost unfettered authority to spend $700 billion purchasing troubled assets from financial institutions. A few days later, my colleagues on the Banking Committee and I held a hearing at which Secretary Paulson, Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke, and others testified.
They made a strong case for the need to act quickly to prevent further damage to our economy. The turmoil in the credit markets has the potential to do great damage to a lot of innocent bystanders. I am afraid that if we do not act, the economic instability could affect thousands of American jobs and the savings of countless middle class families.
But Secretary Paulson’s proposal is not the right answer. No Secretary should be given a $700 billion blank check. Taxpayers must be given an opportunity to recover their money, and assurances their tax dollars will not fund lavish pay and golden parachutes. We need strong rules to guard against abuse and we need ensure that Ohio is helped and not just Wall Street.
In the days ahead, we need to focus on containing the damage to middle class families and local businesses as much as possible. In the months ahead, we need to take a hard look at how financial markets are regulated so we never find ourselves in this situation again.

Wow, what a wild day!
It reminds me of a time in my life when I thought things just couldn’t get any
worse. I was so depressed. But, I have a strong faith in the Lord and the good in
most people. And you know, things started turning around.
So my philosophy is sometimes when things just don’t fit right, you have to strip
down to your underwear and start all over again. I think that’s what’s happening.
What’s the alternative. Leave things the way they were? I don’t think so, we would be far worse off. This will work out. Be patient.
I think now we need to encourage those who voted this down, to come up with a reasonable plan that benefits the taxpayers and not money to ACORN or others.

I don’t know who FOX-Rasmussen is polling in my “swing state” but they sure haven’t asked anyone around here. Two of the main roads into town are lined with signs saying “Another Democrat for McCain”. Every day more and more of these signs are going up. People are constantly stopping me around town and asking where I got my McCain bumper stickers. I carry some in the car now to hand out. I do not believ this race is a “dead heat”. That would not be good for news media ratings. I believe McCain is way ahead but to kwwp things alive the pollsters target areas they know will get the results they already want.

You know regarding the polls, I look at the phone all the time to see who is calling and I don’t answer numbers I don’t recognize or blocked numbers. I can remember twice the phone said it was a poll and I didn’t answer. Now I feel sort of bad about it. My kids don’t even answer the house phone.

In my opt they/we are the silent but not presented majority. The same thing is happening here. Two large Obama/Biden placards were put up at the entrance of my community last Friday–after the debate. Sunday Morning, they were gone. The homeowner’s association took action and had them removed…with no resistance or complaints.

I got tired of waiting for Gallup to answer me back about the relative number of Republicans and Democrats they were including in their “likely” registered voters so I did some algebra with the information on the weekly aggregates, week of Sept 15-21. (I warned them I could add, subtract, multiply and divide).
Dem= (.15 X Ind) + (1.31 X Repub)
where
Dem = Number of Democrats Polled
Ind = Number of Independents Polled
Repub = Number of Republicans Polled
The implications is that there were at around 30% more Democrats than Republicans in the poll.
So much for the validity of using cell phones.
Message sent to Gallup on Polling:
I have sent in several inquiries about the anomalies I have seen in the Presidential Election polls on McCain and Obama. Doing some algebra on last weeks aggregates, it appears that you are sampling 30% more Democrats than Republicans. Has Gallup joined in the Death of Journalism this election?
Where do you get your Voter Registration phone contact numbers? If this kind of bias exists, then you have a responsibility to report it with the data. Otherwise, you have lost your integrity.

The polls are being loaded. They keep changing the metodology in such a manner as to make it seems tht bo is ahead. One of our PUMAS broke the latest trend from gallup down after they refused to give her the data.
I can’t find the post but it was today , early this morning I believe.
Ever notice how everytime McCAin gets ahead there is a sudden and inexplicable 6-8 point jump for bo?
Later we find that the pollsters have sampled either a dis proportinate amount of dems or AAs.
Like the cnn poll on the debate. What was it? Like half democrats to 28% repubs? Somehthing like that.

A MSM female democrat guest speaker was suggesting that it’s “not too late” and that Palin should drop out/ resign from her VP nomination because, in her opinion, Palin just can’t do it all and should spend her time at home with family!

I was 4 years of age at the time and grew up during the depression years. My parents sold a large property in La Crosse,WI to buy a home in Milwaukee. To make a long story short, we lost our home in Milwaukee. My father became ill and was hospitalized the Veterans’ Hospital and my poor mother was too proud to apply for County help until she had no choice. We used lard for butter and my brother’s memories of those years was so vivid that he wouldn’t even allow margarine in the house in the much improved living conditions of his adult life.
So your impression that the people who were effected badly by the depression is way off the reality.

I mentioned this above but I will repeat. The fact that the entire black caucas voted against the bail out leads me to believe it was a stratagem. I also feel that it was timed. For the next couple of days we will be inundated by the most grave speculations and fears. When they throw out the next bill people will be so eager to have this resolved that they will be able to insert an ACORN provision. I have already written to my reps saying no way but we now have two days to nip this in the bud.

posted on dozens of blogs. I have received over 1000 emails commenting on my position as a liberal
Democrat voting for McCain-Palin. Most of the emails agreed with my position, but others called me
Benedict Arnold, Lipstick Lady or Bill O’Reilly’s new squeeze. My loyalty to the progressive women’s
movement has been challenged because I have chosen to try a different approach to fight for women’s
rights. I want to start by squashing all rumors. No I am not stupid. No I am not a closet Republican. And
yes I understand the possible implications on Roe v. Wade by supporting a McCain-Palin ticket.
A few days after posting the article I delivered a shortened version of the speech at a McCain-Palin Rally.
An executive member of the National Organization for Women contacted me the very next day. It was a
friendly conversation tinted with sarcasm. “How do you feel about your speech?” she asked me. “Great.” I responded. “Why shouldn’t I feel great? I gave a speech about women’s rights in front of a large audience.
I highlighted the underrepresentation of women in every branch of government, the sexism in the media,
and the unfair treatment of Hillary Clinton by the Democratic Party.” “Where did you give your speech?” A
rhetorical question deserved a quip answer, “Before thirty-thousand Americans.” Republicans are Americans,
aren’t they? “By speaking at a McCain-Palin event people will think you are endorsing McCain.” That’s the
point, I am endorsing McCain-Palin.
I tried to explain to my comrade in arms that we have the same goals and that I stand on the same side of
the issues with most other feminists. I am strongly pro-choice and will fight anyone who tries to interfere
with a woman’s reproductive freedom. I believe in the economic and educational advancement of women.
I believe in equal opportunity and equal pay for equal work. I believe in equal representation for women at
all levels of government. I believe that only by achieving gender parity in the House, the Senate, the President’s cabinet and on the Supreme Court can women achieve real equality. The problem is not where we want to

assisted numerous projects to improve the quality of childcare so that mothers could work and not worry
about the safety of their children. If I am anything, I am a feminist.
I am passionately pro-choice but I also think that it is not always a psychologically free choice. I have written
a play which deals with the psychological complexities of abortion entitled, One in Two, which has been
performed in New York, New Jersey, and Washington DC. If I am anything, I am a feminist.

I am voting for McCain-Palin and I am a feminist. Many feminists can’t understand my choice. I am not
betraying the cause, the fight, the mission, because I don’t want to vote Democratic. The Democratic Party
is not our ally. The Democratic Party is 60% women but it has only once selected a woman as a
vice-presidential candidate and that was nearly a quarter of a century ago. We are chattel in our own party.
The head of the Democratic National Committee has never been20a woman. Money donated to the Women’s Leadership Fund is funneled into the Obama Victory Fund. We cannot give dominion over our bodies or
ourselves to one party. Current feminist groups have no teeth because they are part and parcel of the
Democratic Party. They are held hostage by Roe v. Wade. They know it and the Democratic Party knows it.
The only way to regain our power is to regain our vote. The Democratic Party has no reason to earn our vote.
We’ve sacrificed one choice for another.
I will by not be held hostage by the Democratic Party that turned a blind eye to the corruption in the
Democratic primaries and Democratic caucuses.
I will not be held hostage by the Democratic Party that ignored a woman who got 18 million votes.
I will not be held host age by the Democratic Party a party that was deaf, dumb and blind to the persistent
and pervasive sexist attacks against Hillary Clinton.
I will not be held hostage by a Democratic Party that has never had a female head of the DNC.
I will not be threatened into submission. I will not cast my vote based on fear.
The Democratic Party cannot be rewarded for it’s pervasive disrespect of women. Sometimes you have to
break a few eggs to make an omelet. Sometimes you have to tear down a house before you can rebuild it.
Most feminists think the Democratic Party will treat them differently during the next election. There is no
next time. There is only this time. Reinforcing abuse only perpetuates abuse. In any abusive relationship,
you have to leave to get respect . Abusers are often charming and apologetic and hold out the hope of better behavior. But there is no then, there is only now.
I am a woman and I am a feminist. To the other feminists out there I ask, “Where is your pride or are you
a victim of your own misogyny?”

NewOrleans #788- thanks. Yes, it’s been rough. Mom is getting better now, but still tires very very quickly and I am still doing all the work here. In fact, tonight I set up something for her to warm for lunch while I’m gone tomorrow. I haven’t been in the other site much lately either- for the same reason. I begged and begged… but there are still about 3 obots spewing vile stenches to every 2 or 3 (if we’re lucky) sensible people…. and I’m so tired of “fighting dragons”. I’ll be back, but not quite now. Pam is gone for awhile now too- now HER mother is having surgery, she told me. Whatever political capital Bush had left is not completely gone.
First his Secretary of the Treasury sets forth a 3 page!!! do or die plan that vests him with sole authority to spend 4700 BILLION as he sees fit in his sole discretion. Moreover, any decision he makes is not reviewable by wither Congress or the judiciary. To say that this was an extreme error of judgment is an understatement.
Now, we find out today (or at least I did) that Paulson, the former Chairman of Goldman Sachs, held a meeting with the New Yoork Federal Reserve on the fate of AIG prior to that $85 billion bailout. The only private sector individual in attendance was the current Chariman of Goldman Sachs. Wait, it gets better! Goldman Sachs had a $20 billion exposure to AIG.
To save any ounce of faith the American people have at this point, Bush needs to fire Paulson. Then he needs to turn the matter over to the FBI to investigate.
With that said about Bush, I think Pelosi is about a nano second behind him. What is she thinking??? Before the vote today, she excoriates the GOP, who she expects to vote for the bill with her. In addition, as speaker she has the ability to delay the introduction of a bill that does not have the votes to pass. The Dems control Congress, so even without the GOP, her party has the votes to pass the bill. Yet, the bill goes down in flames – with 92 Democrats voting against it.
To a cynical person, it would certainly appear that the “vote” was nothing but eyewash. The pro-ACORN faction all voted against the bill. Other Democrats who wanted other goodies added voted against the bill. And Pelosi goes out of her way just before the vote to alienate the GOP members lined up in favor of the bill.
Was this a set up? To create a “surprise” failure, only to have the Dems ride in and rescue the country with a bill festooned with pork, ACORN goodies, and other far left ornaments? There will be no action tomorrow, or Wednesday, because of the Jewish holidays. That allows the global economy to simmer on the failure for another two days, which could send markets down even further. And that could create an environment that provides the cover necessary to get a bill, any bill passed, even one not a single member of the GOP votes for.
At this point, I do not trust any of them, and based on Pelosi’s and Reid’s ultra partisan rantings in the last week, I think it is very possible that the above scenario has legitimacy. And if that is not the case, they are reckless and exceedingly dumb to create an enviromment that leads people to conclude that they are acting only in their own interests and not in the interests of the Country.
I wonder if we can bring banishment back into vogue? Bush, Cheney. Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Dodd, Paulson and Cox – banish the lot of them. Any suggestions on a new home for these people?

I was just at a Wholefoods in Hillcrest, California – there were two mid 20s women asking if I had a minute to register to vote for Obama… I told them no, I don’t like Obama and if I wasn’t dying to go to the bathroom, I would have engaged them and asked what the hell is wrong with them.
I still think something big is going to happen that is going to make a major change in this election. I don’t know what kind of thing is going to happen, or when… I don’t know which way it’s going to change it (for McCain or for BO), but I really think there is going to be something happening…. in the very near future….. that is going to change things that we are seeing now. One possibility that would be in Mac’s favor would be… I had read that the FBI are out watching big-time because they had heard there was another big attack in the offing soon. Another possibility is, well… you’re probably going to think I’m nuts here, but I think all the weather signs and the economy all point to a very soon “second coming of Christ”. Or, something totally and completely unexpected and unpredictable… I don’t know. I just have this funny gut feeling something is going to happen………

FDIC insures your money up to $100,000. If you have more than that in the bank, the FDIC will still insure it, if you add potential POD beneficiaries to the account (POD means “payable upon death”). At one time she chaired the Chicago stock exchange. She was born in Iran (and the article said) “not unlike Obama’s being “from” Hawaii or “from” Indonesia, that fact is more misleading than humiliating. She lived in Iran for 6 years. Her father is an internationally recognized geneticist and pathologist (hmmm, that could be helpful if nobo needed a DNA swap!). They were in Iran while her father was doing because it was some program for American docs to help developing nations. I wouldn’t doubt it if she was at the big reception for ahmenidjad (sp).
