Standing Alone

photo by Nathan Lopez

There is something both profoundly vulnerable and at the same moment astonishingly strong about a person who stands alone to face opposition. The cowards among us will inevitably be inclined to ridicule you, or — much worse — if there is a crowd, they may attack. Our own Zee faced this outside Barack Obama’s Millionaire’s Birthday Ball in Boston last week. She stood alone and before long was ridiculed and then assaulted.

Geraldine Ferraro did a similar thing today by stating unequivocally on national TV that the double standard used against women who compete has GOT TO STOP — less viscerally brave perhaps, but no less profound.

We have a Special EVENING PUMA PAC ACTION tonight, Folks. I’m asking every Puma PAC member (or friend!) to write a handwritten thank-you note to Geraldine Ferraro. By standing up alone for Hillary today, she stood up for all of us.

Make your note short, sweet, and to the point — that way she’ll be able to read all of them!

Print out one of the Puma PAC letterheads on which to write your letter, or just use your own stationery. Get the letterhead HERE. We are sending Ms. Ferraro’s address as an email PROWL.

Please write your quick note of thanks tonight so you can drop it in the mailbox first thing in the morning. After you write your note, be sure to come back and BRAG in comments — hey! why not post a copy of your note, especially if it’s short and sweet. That way it will also be an inspiration and guide to other members!

Let’s get Prowling!

Pumas…do you think we should all e-mail Larry King and have him ask Pelosi if she’s seen Obama’s Original Birth Certificate to see where he was born? I did already. Even if all we got out of it is a mention, it might make Larry’s listeners sit up and take notice that maybe there is an issue with the birth certificate. Just an idea.

I got 22 letters to Texas super delegates ready to put in the snail mail tomorrow and sent the following email to Elton John:

Dear Elton John,

I have been a fan of yours for years. I am writing to you because I am also a fan and big supporter for Hillary Clinton, and I have been told that you are a fan of hers too.

I am part of a group called PUMA (People United Means Action) here is the United States. We are a grassroot movement that is doing everything we can to get Hillary Clinton in nomination for president. She is the most qualified candidate but the democratic party has forced her to step aside for their selected candidate Barack Obama. Hillary has won the popular vote here but we are fighting against corrupt politics. Please visit our website http://blog.pumapac.org to get more information.

You are a well known and loved performer and people listen to you. If you would like to help us to achieve some our goals it would be so much appreciated. Please think about it and thank you in advance for your consideration.

Regards,

#10 murphy good article thanks.
You know I’ve been thinking a lot lately and all the comments I’ve read saying how can we really be democrats if we are now supporting McCain (for those who are) or be against BO. Well my question is reading things about the unfair treatment, witnessing the unfair treatment, seeing what is going on now with BO and Clinton all the things the DNC and crew has done, I think the real question is how could you have been a real Clinton supporter and now support BO. You would have to be living under a rock to not read it in a local paper, hear it on the local news, see it on the internet,watch it on cable. So I think next time that question is posted I in return will ask them how can support him now.

Just listened to NPR. Go Murphy! wooooo hoooo.

Whenever people ask why you wouldn’t support XO over McCain because XO’s policies are so similar to Hillary’s, the obvious answer is “Well, who really knows what XO’s policies are? Not only does he contract himself in his speeches, he also says one thing and then does another. I don’t KNOW what XO’s policies are! Do you?”.

No one can possibly argue against that given all of the evidence out there that these is a true statements. FISA is a biggie and it illustrates the point beautifully.

Get your questions in for Nancy Pelosi- she will be on Larry King Live in a few minutes (CNN). Let’s ask her some pointed and intelligent questions, put her on the hot seat, shall we? She’s going to be on about John Edwards’ affair. Really important compared to the splintering of the Democratic party, wouldn’t you say?

#46 Jeremy on 08.11.08 at 8:57 pm

#39 texassherry–

That is the best way. When I go to write something, I hear all the thoughts, but sometimes meander off topic and want to include the history of the world. I will go and re-read something and scratch it out and ask myself—what the heck does this have to do with anything?

WARMONGER OBAMA BLAMES RUSSIA, MIMICS BUSH, CHENEY

“Clearly over the course of the last 24 hours this crisis has escalated,” said Ben Rhodes, an Obama foreign policy aide. “Clearly Russia bears the responsibility for that escalation.” If this is the 3 AM phone call, Obama has failed miserably. Obama is running for the third term of the dotard warmonger Dick Cheney, who according to AP ‘told Georgia’s pro-American president that “Russian aggression must not go unanswered, and that its continuation would have serious consequences for its relations with the United States.”‘

jbjd – dean’s e-mail stated that the info is wrong on a web site (he didn’t identify which site and i hadn’t identified the site where i got the data) and i didn’t press him for the details regarding which aspects of it were accurate and which were erroneous. he primarily accounted for his own presidential bid as far as correction of accuracy.

in any case, dean and i actually exchanged one more round of e-mails since my last post. since i felt i had his ear and we were both being civil it seemed a good time to continue to press my main point, which i did and which he received with respect. i have no delusions about him or the ultimate meaning of our exchange. i’m not naive. but i do think that it’s important to know what the goal is in taking any specific action. if it’s to express anger, i think none of us having any trouble in that department. but if it’s to actually get someone’s ear, then i, for one, think it’s important to be sensitive to the tone of exchanges. whether or not the other person is being genuine if they respond, etc, no one can ever know. but given how many responses from sd’s and the like that PUMA’s have received that have been utterly rude and dismissive, i appreciated having the opportunity to have a couple of rounds of communication with dean that were respectful in tone.

again, i didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday and have no illusions, but if the choices are to have two minutes of someone’s ear vs total alienation, i felt i had his ear, for whatever it was worth.

meanwhile, i didn’t appreciate your sarcasm in the downstairs post and it really surprised me coming from you.

#51–”months ago?” Elizabeth knew a year ago according to John. That is a cop out as far as Bill O is concerned. Pass the buck and give excuses, even if it means health issues. Would they have kept the news under the table is it concerned Hillary when Bill was having bypass surgery? For some reason I doubt it.

I want to thank you for our ardent support of Senator Clinton. Your voice has been a beacon of sanity amidst what has become a shameful Democratic Party process that has left me in a state of shock and disbelief.

Thank you for having the integrity and vision to stand by your convictions. Thank you for being willing to speak truth to power. Thank you for your abiding support of Senator Clinton and women everywhere, be they running for the highest office in the land or trying to get a minimum wage job.

Your voice continues to cut through the madness and represents so honestly and so eloquently what so many of us are fighting for.

Whew, Nancy Pelosi really pouring it on on Larry King Live saying she remained neutral during the primary and how great it would be to have a female VP candidate, be it Hillary Clinton, Kathleen Sebelius or Janet Napeolitano (sp?). So that may be the scoop for the night on the VP pick.

#58 determinedinNM on 08.11.08 at 9:09 pm

So far, Pelosi says she is so proud of Hillary Clinton’s campaign and how she “almost won”. Larry King will be asking her about the Energy crisis and why Congress is on recess, after the commercial break.

Pelosi also stated that doesn’t think Clinton would have benefitted if Edwards had not been in the campaign.

By the way, about sending letters to Elton John, what about sending e-mails to people from the entertainment? Being public figures will attract more attention to our cause.

#55 yes K–selective reporting and cya. As far as Bill O goes–he is just ticked that he didn’t get to report it first and was not granted the exclusive interview from JE but went to ABC. In my opinion–Elizabeth’s health issue makes his excuse even more pitiful. Bill O has some good points, but his negatives can blind them.

Obama Signs Book Deal

Three Rivers Press, a paperback imprint of Crown Publishing, will publish Sen. Barack Obama’s latest book, “Change We Can Believe In: Barack Obama’s Plan to Renew America’s Promise.”

Crown, a division of Random House Inc., itself a unit of Bertelsmann AG, also published Mr. Obama’s “Dreams From My Father” and “The Audacity of Hope.” According to the presidential candidate’s literary representative, Washington attorney Robert Barnett, the contract is between Crown and the senator’s campaign, not Mr. Obama himself.

The book will include a foreword by Mr. Obama and feature sections, written by members of his presidential campaign, on such issues as health care, energy and national security. Mr. Barnett says the campaign will donate all net proceeds to a charity. The book isn’t part of the senator’s current deal with Crown, which calls for him to write two more books, including a children’s book.

Why Obama is in Trouble
By Steven Warshawsky

There is palpable anxiety, even despair, among many Republicans and conservatives over the possibility that Barack Obama will be elected president this November. This anxiety is being fueled by the mainstream media’s fawning coverage of Obama’s every word, while shamelessly downplaying John McCain’s campaign; by public opinion polls that purport to show Obama “leading” the race over McCain; and by political commentators, on both sides of the aisle, who believe this is the Democrats’ “election to lose,” based on historical cycles, an uneven economy, high gas prices, continuing opposition to the Iraq War, and President Bush’s dismal approval ratings.

I don’t share this anxiety. For months now, I have been reassuring my right-leaning friends that Barack Obama will not be elected president. If I were a gambling man, I would buy lots of McCain stock on Intrade. Why am I so confident that John McCain is going to win the election? In short, because Barack Obama is not an acceptable choice to lead the country. Let me explain.

Obama is too young and inexperienced.

One of Obama’s most striking characteristics is how “green” he is compared to previous presidential candidates. Obama was born on August 4, 1961. He just turned 47 years old. The average age of elected presidents since 1952 (the era of televised politics) is 56.

If elected president, Obama would be the fifth youngest president in U.S. history. The only younger presidents would be Teddy Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and Ulysses S. Grant, all of whom were much more accomplished than Obama. Grant, Roosevelt, and Kennedy were war heroes. (Not Clinton, notoriously.) Roosevelt and Clinton had served as state governors. Grant had been the general-in-chief of the Union Army during the Civil War. The least experienced of the four, Kennedy, had served twelve years in Congress, six in the House of Representatives and six in the Senate, and had been a serious candidate for vice-president in 1956.

What has Obama accomplished to date? In truth, not very much — except to master the art of self-promotion.

Obama has written two best-selling autobiographies: Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance (1995) and The Audacity of Hope (2006). Yet he has never served in an important leadership position in government, business, or the military. His ability to perform as a chief executive officer is completely untested.

Obama has prestigious degrees from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, but no significant professional achievements to his name. No businesses or organizations he has founded or managed. No law firm partnerships. No important cases he has tried. Not a single work of legal scholarship he has authored, despite having been Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Law Review and a part-time law professor at the University of Chicago for twelve years. (This is unheard of in the elite ranks of the legal profession, and calls into question the bona fides of Obama’s professorship.)

Obama’s principal occupation before entering politics was as a “community organizer” in Chicago. By his own admission, these efforts achieved only “some success,” and none worthy of highlighting on his campaign website. Obama then served eight unexceptional years in the Illinois Senate, and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004, where he is not even considered one of the Democratic Party’s legislative leaders.

And this man believes he is “the one we have been waiting for”?

Obama may be considered a “rock star” by his supporters, but the kind of superficial glamour and excitement that this terminology suggests is not what most voters are looking for in a president. Heartland values, not Hollywood values, still define what most voters want in a president. Most voters want a president whom they perceive as loyal, courageous, hardworking, and fair. Someone who commands the respect of others through the strength of his character and the wisdom of his actions. Someone who is prepared to fight to protect his home and country from invaders. In other words, someone who appeals to voters, on a psychological or emotional level, as the kind of person they would want for a father, husband, boss, or comrade-in-arms.

Rock stars may be fun, but they do not fit this image. Neither does Obama. His life story, while unique and interesting, bespeaks little more than an ambitious and opportunistic young man, still wet behind the ears, with an unhealthy fascination with his own ego – and potentially unreliable when the chips are down.

The American people are not going to entrust the security and prosperity of the country to such an immature and unproven man.

Obama is too liberal.

The last Democratic presidential candidate who garnered more than 50% of the popular vote was Jimmy Carter in 1976 – and Carter received only 51% of the vote in a political environment marked by defeat in Vietnam, the Watergate scandal, an energy crisis, and stagflation. There has been only one other Democratic president in the past 40 years: Bill Clinton. Despite campaigning as “New Democrat,” Clinton received only 43% of the popular vote in 1992 (his victory was due to the third-party candidacy of Ross Perot) and 49% of the popular vote in 1996. Significantly, the Democratic candidate’s share of the popular vote has gone down the last two elections. Al Gore received 48.4% of the popular vote in 2000, and John Kerry received 48.3% in 2004.

The Democratic Party has a terrible track record at the presidential level since the 1960s because it consistently nominates far left presidential candidates who do not represent the values, interests, and aspirations of most Americans. See McGovern, Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, Kerry. Even Gore, who was considered a “moderate” Democratic (no longer), lost to the uninspiring George W. Bush in 2000.

Barack Obama is no exception. In his brief tenure in the U.S. Senate, Obama has compiled a consistently liberal voting record, and was named the Most Liberal Senator for 2007 by the National Journal. This distinction does not augur well for Obama. John Kerry was named the Most Liberal Senator for 2003 — the year before he lost the 2004 presidential contest to Bush.

As a U.S. Senator, Obama has voted along Democratic Party lines 97 percent of the time, almost 10 percentage points higher than the average for Senate Democrats. So much for his “bipartisan” image. He opposed funding for the War on Terror that was not tied to a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. He opposed strengthening the ability of the federal government to monitor terrorist communications. He voted in favor of providing habeas corpus rights to detainees at Guantanamo Bay. He supported the failed “comprehensive immigration reform” bills. He voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment. He opposed a bill that would have reduced the federal estate tax. He voted against the confirmations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.

For his efforts, Obama has received “100″ ratings from Americans for Democratic Action, Planned Parenthood, the AFL-CIO, the American Federation of Government Workers, Citizens for Tax Justice (i.e., for raising taxes on the “rich”), Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, the National Education Association, and the National Organization for Women. He has received “F” grades from the National Taxpayers Union, the National Rifle Association, and U.S. English, a 13 rating from Citizens Against Government Waste, 7 ratings from the Club for Growth, the American Conservative Union, and the Eagle Forum, and zero ratings from the Family Research Council, the National Right to Life Committee, and Americans for Tax Reform.

Obama’s voting record as a state senator reflected the same left-wing agenda: He opposed restrictions on partial birth abortion and requiring medical care for fetuses who are born alive during an abortion. He opposed requiring school officials to install pornography-blocking software on public computers accessible to minors. He opposed a $500 income tax credit for parents who send their children to private schools. He supported restrictions on gun ownership, and opposed a bill that permitted the owner of an unregistered handgun to claim self-defense if he used the gun in his own home. He consistently voted in favor of higher taxes.

True to form, in his campaign for president, Obama advocates a dizzying array of hyper-liberal policies, including: “equal pay” laws, expanded federal leave laws, expanded “hate crime” laws, a panoply of social services for convicted criminals, increasing foreign aid spending by tens of billions of dollars with the goal of “cutting extreme poverty around the world in half by 2015″ (pure utopianism paid for by the American taxpayer), requiring 25 percent of U.S. electricity come from “renewable” sources by 2025 (an impossible goal without drastically shrinking the economy), spending tens of billions of dollars on an FDR-style array of federal economic programs, further raising the minimum wage, and providing “affordable” and “comprehensive” health insurance to all Americans (aka socialized medicine). Naturally, he proposes to pay for all these programs by raising taxes on “the wealthiest taxpayers” and imposing a “windfall profits tax” on oil companies.

With the sole (and misguided) exception of “universal health care,” there is little popular demand in this country for the kind of soak-the-rich, tax-and-spend politics that Obama is offering. This is not 1932 or 1965. The American people are not interested in another round of top-down social engineering by the federal government. If anything, the nation’s political leaders need to catch up to the waves of conservative and populist impulses spreading throughout the country. See, for example, the grassroots movement to limit the eminent domain power of state and local governments and the nationwide revolt against “comprehensive Immigration reform.”

Obama’s dissolutely liberal politics will sink him in the general election, just as it torpedoed previous Democratic candidates.

Obama is too race-conscious.

Finally, we come to the “hot button” issue in this election: Obama’s black racial consciousness.

Contrary to what Obama and his supporters want the American people to believe, Obama is not a “post-racial” politician. As abundantly demonstrated in his two autobiographies, his 20-year membership in Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s “unashamedly black” Trinity United Church of Christ, and his “intensely race-conscious approach” to politics as an Illinois state senator (see here), Obama is deeply committed to his “black” identity — despite having a white mother and being raised for much of his childhood by his white grandparents. Furthermore, Obama built his political career on promoting the interests of the black urban community. Right or wrong, fair or unfair, Obama’s black racial consciousness is going to have a negative effect on his campaign for president by undermining his appeal among white working- and middle-class voters.

Let’s look at some numbers. According to the CNN exit poll, in the 2004 presidential election, the electorate was composed of 77% whites, 11% blacks, 8% Latinos, 2% Asian, and 2% other. They voted as follows: whites 58-41 for Bush; blacks 88-11 for Kerry; Latinos 53-44 for Kerry; Asians 56-44 for Kerry.

I see little reason to believe that the Latino or Asian votes will change substantially in 2008. Clearly, the black vote will shift even more strongly in favor of the Democratic candidate. However, the white voting population is seven times larger than the black voting population. Consequently, a shift in the black vote of seven percentage points is roughly equivalent to a shift in the white vote of one point. Even if Obama were to receive essentially all black votes, which is unlikely, a loss of less than two percentage points of the white vote would be enough to offset these gains.

So the key to the upcoming election is whether white voters will be more, less, or equally likely to vote for Obama as for Kerry. I believe the answer is less likely.

Interestingly, commentators on the left tend to agree with this prediction, because they believe that many white voters are “racists”; commentators on the right usually ignore the race issue altogether, because they fear that any discussion of white voting preferences will support the “racism” charge. I disagree that “racism” is the explanation. Rather, it is Obama’s history of race-based politics and his membership in a militant black church – which places him in opposition to most white voters on such emotional issues as welfare, crime, and affirmative action, and casts doubt on his ability and commitment to represent the interests of the entire nation.

To develop a profile of Obama’s electoral strengths and weaknesses, I examined the CNN entrance and exit polls for the 2008 Democratic primaries in Iowa, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. These were the states in which the spread between Bush and Kerry in 2004 was three percentage points or less (in either direction). (New Hampshire also belongs on this list, but I could not find polling data for the 2008 primaries in that state.) I selected these states because they are likely to be the critical battlegrounds this fall.

The polls show that, in general, Obama did especially well among black voters, younger voters (under 45), voters who earn more than $100,000 per year, voters with college and postgraduate degrees, non-religious voters, and self-described liberal voters. In other words, the core constituencies of the Democratic Party. On the other hand, he demonstrated much less appeal to white voters, older voters (ages 45 and up), voters who earn less than $50,000 per year, voters with some or no college education, Catholic voters, and self-described moderate voters. In other words, white working- and middle-class voters — so-called Reagan Democrats. These voters strongly preferred Hillary Clinton.

Significantly, in the 2004 election, John Kerry performed reasonably well among this group. He won 55 percent of voters who earn less than $50,000. He won 47 percent of voters ages 45 and up. He won 47 percent of voters with no college degree. He won 47 percent of Catholic voters. He won 55 percent of self-described moderate voters. Nevertheless, Kerry lost. If only a few percent of these voters switch to McCain, as I believe they will, Obama cannot win. Yes, tens of millions of Americans (of all colors) will vote for Obama; but more will vote for McCain.

Overall, I predict Obama will receive even less of the popular vote than John Kerry in 2004 (48.3%), and perhaps as little as Michael Dukakis in 1988 (45.7%).

As I wrote last December, “[t]he pundits can talk until they are blue in the face about Obama’s charisma and eloquence and cross-racial appeal. The fact of the matter is that Obama has no chance of being elected president in 2008.” I am more convinced of this conclusion than ever.

Dear Ms. Ferraro:

I am writing to tell you “Thank You!” for your unwavering support of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

As usual, your comments today on why Senator Clinton’s name should be placed in nomination at the Convention were both informative and encouraging.

To those of us that will never stop believing, Hillary Clinton is the only real choice for America in these troubled times. Denying 18 million majority voters recognition of our election of Hillary Clinton as our choice of the democratic nominee is still beyond belief. Denying us the opportunity to see her name in nomination, however, will be the end of party affiliation for many of us – which I have reason to believe is far greater in numbers than the party will acknowledge.

I am an action member of Puma (People United Means Action). Pumapac.org was founded by Darragh Murphy on June 7th. Each day, thousands of women and men gather and take action, informing the DNC and our democratic elected officials that “we are not falling in line or voting for Barack Obama”. We are well-informed, organized voting Americans against the Democratic Party’s undemocratic “selection” of Obama as the nominee. We have emailed, sent letters and made phone calls – totaling hundreds of thousands of communications in all. Yet, the DNC barely acknowledges us and the mainstream media considers us relatively “insignificant.”

When we hear voices like yours, Ms. Ferraro, we hear our own. When we see your courage to speak up for all American voters to have their voices heard and their candidate recognized for having earned their votes, we know we are not alone. When a highly accomplished woman, who has spent a lifetime in public service, continues to stand up for what is right in upholding our democratic process, no matter what the critics say, it becomes all too clear: The respect we are demanding is not only for Hillary Clinton and her voters, but for those that have gone before her and those that are to come.

Thank you so much for being a voice for our democracy and standing up for Hillary Clinton.

Although, I am certain you are already considered an Honorary Puma, please come and visit us at http://www.blog.pumapac.org.

With much respect,

Finally someone in the media is talking about the way Hillary has been treated. She is entitled to have her delegates heard. In most (if not all) conventions, presidential candidates have been allowed to do this. Are we changing tradition for Hillary? What is the Obama Camp afraid of?
While I have great admiration for Senator Clinton (I voted for her in the primary);I will give my support to the person I believe is best for our country. Unfortunately, because of his treatment of President and Senator Clinton combined with his inexperience ( not to mention his “Presidential” overseas tour),he only has shown me he is NOT the person to govern our great country. Senator McCain has my vote.

Anna7000-

I too have been exchanging emails w/someone who initially identified herself as an “OB Superdelegate” but who now signs her emails with her first name. Instead of trying to get her to change her vote, I focussed on democracy and getting Hillary into nomination.

I told her about PUMA PAC–and that we’re not “a bunch of racist middle-aged she-devils riding around on broomsticks waiting to gouge out the eyes of unsuspecting men.” I told her she can lurk on the site and NO ONE will know she’s here. I have a gut feeling that she’s afraid and that’s why I don’t want to identify her.

Completed prowls for the day.
Completed 6 emails or letters to Swing Super Delegates

Here is my letter, I tweaked parts of the original:

8/11/08
PUMA Pac
Contact: Murphy@pumapac.org

Dear Swing State Super Delegate,

I understand that you will be casting your delegate vote for Senator Obama at the convention. I strongly oppose Senator Obama receiving delegate votes from a state that Senator Clinton had won in the primaries.

Our votes are sacred. The Founding Fathers created a system where the majority rules through an election process. When it is violated, trust in our government is broken. More significantly, Senator Clinton is the best Democratic candidate to represent Democrats and win the Presidency. As you know, winning your state is CRUCIAL for the Democrats to regain the White House.

As other pundits have noted, the country wants to elect a Democratic President but not Senator Obama. The party loses credibility not only with their base voters but with the rest of the electorate by endorsing such a weak candidate. We need delegates that will
stand up to the party bosses and carry the Voice of the Voters to the Convention and VOTE for the candidate who can win it for us in your crucial state in November.

I am a Democrat and a member of Puma PAC, People United Means Action (http://blog.pumapac.org). We are the Voice of the Voters in the Democratic Party and we will do everything we can to stop the party bosses from forcing YOU to select an unprepared and preposterously weak candidate in Denver.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

I listened to PBS, FOX, and CNN about the Edwards story. Pumas, this is the time for us to write the Ombudsman of the WP, NYT, etc. They are doing a lot of soul searching around this story. They must investigate *61.

I’m going to spend my time reading your posts.

Here’s my note –

Dear Ms. Ferraro –

I’m just writing, as a PUMA from both NYC and Connecticut, to express my deep appreciation for your courage in stating the obvious – that the DNC’s appointed nominee has, to put it mildly, not got the qualifications to be our Commander in Chief. I keep wondering what Tip O’Neill would have thought about all this – but then again, this travesty would never have happened on his watch.

I’m a registered Democrat but I will not vote for Obama or for anyone who supported him in the CT primary. My husband, who votes in NYC, fixes the blame for President McCain squarely on the superdelegates.

You gave them fair warning, and I will always be appreciative of that.

Many thanks.

I jokingly used the word “boyfriend” to refer to Chairman Dean but I was serious about discussing with him getting historical information about previous nominations.

I read both of your posts tonight relating to your contact with Chairman Dean. That is, I read your first post, in which you reported that you sent him correspondence containing inaccurate information; that he responded in a manner you found “unprofessional,” that is, he pointed out the factual mistakes in your correspondence; and that you responded to instruct him as to the inappropriateness of his comments. I read your second posting, in which you described his ‘apologetic’ response.

Did you read my post to you, on Sunday, wherein I described the trouble I was having getting accurate information on line about previous nominees, in which posting I explained that the easiest way to get historical information on the party would be to call the DNC and that every time I try this, I get the runaround?

In other words, having spent hours trying to research past candidate information – how many delegates they had gathered before the convention, whether these candidates got onto the ballot and, if so, how many votes they received – including going to the DNC site, expecting this information would be on line; just so that you could have accurate information for the letters you said you wanted to send, I was merely proposing one way to get this information would be to ask Chairman Dean, given my impression, having read your postings, he would be willing to provide you with this information.

I also would like to thank you for speaking up for woman’s right you are a wonderful woman and person. I thought it was horrible what happened to you during the primaries but I admired the way your loyalty to Hillary never faded. These are the best investigative reporters all in one place still have more links,

New Non-Profit Investigative News Organization to be Led by Paul
Steiger
New York, NY (October 15, 2007)—A new, non-partisan, non-profit newsroom
producing journalism in the public interest will launch here in January under the name
ProPublica. Paul E. Steiger, former managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, will
serve as president and editor in chief.

ProPublica, when fully staffed in 2008, will include 24 fulltime reporters and
editors, the largest staff in American journalism devoted solely to investigative
reporting. ProPublica will be supported entirely by philanthropy and will provide
the articles it produces, free of charge, both through its own Web site and to leading
news organizations selected with an eye toward maximizing the impact of each
article.

Commenting on the new organization Mr. Steiger said, “ProPublica will focus
exclusively on journalism that shines a light on exploitation of the weak by the strong
and on the failures of those with power to vindicate the trust placed in them. We
will be non-partisan and non-ideological, adhering to the strictest standards of
journalistic impartiality and fairness.” He continued, “We will look hard at the
critical functions of business and of government, the two biggest centers of power. But
we will also focus on such institutions as unions, universities, hospitals, foundations
and the media when they appear to be exploiting or oppressing those weaker than they, or
when there is evidence that they are abusing the public trust.”

Support for ProPublica is being provided by the Sandler Foundation, The
Atlantic Philanthropies, the JEHT Foundation, and The John D. and Catherine T.
MacArthur Foundation. Herbert Sandler, co-founder with his wife Marion Sandler of
Golden West Financial Corporation, will serve as Chairman of ProPublica.

ProPublica’s Board of Directors is currently in formation. In addition
to Mr. Sandler and Mr. Steiger, it will include Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the
Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and the Director of the W. E. B. Du Bois
Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University; Alberto
Ibargüen, the president & CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation;
former U.S. Rep. James A. Leach, the director of Harvard’s Institute of Politics; and
Rebecca Rimel, the president & CEO of The Pew Charitable Trusts. ProPublica
will also have an Advisory Board of leaders with experience in journalism and related
fields.

Speaking on behalf of the Board of Directors, Mr. Sandler said, “We’re
delighted that Paul Steiger will be leading this important new enterprise—a newsroom
devoted entirely to the creation of journalism in the public interest.” The Sandler
Foundation has made a multi-year commitment to help fund ProPublica.

Ms. Rimel said, “I am very pleased to be joining the Board of
ProPublica. This innovative new platform holds out the promise of creating more
quality journalism of just the sort our society needs. Perhaps ultimately even
more important, ProPublica may help lead the way to crafting new approaches addressing
the market failure that seems to be taking hold in some segments of publishing, and that
threatens a real loss to the health of our democracy.”

The annual operating budget of ProPublica is projected at $10 million, with
roughly two-thirds of all costs being devoted to news. (This compares with, for
instance, leading newspapers today, where news makes up just 15% of total expense.) The
organization will begin publishing in early 2008, when Mr. Steiger’s retirement from
The Wall Street Journal becomes effective. Meanwhile, Richard J. Tofel, who will
be general manager of the new venture, reporting to Mr. Steiger, is overseeing the
start-up of ProPublica.

Mr. Steiger noted that, “The creation of ProPublica comes at a difficult
moment in American publishing. The number and variety of publishing platforms are
exploding in the Internet age. But very few of these new entities are engaged in
original, in-depth reporting. In short, sources of opinion
are proliferating, but sources of facts on which those opinions are
based are shrinking.

“Investigative journalism, in particular, is at risk,” he added.
“Many news organizations have increasingly come to see investigative journalism as a
luxury that can be put aside in tough economic times. A 2005 survey by Arizona
State University of the 100 largest U.S. daily newspapers showed that 37% had
no full-time investigative reporters, a
majority had two or fewer such reporters, and only 10% had four or
more. Television networks and national magazines have similarly been shedding or
shrinking investigative units. Many are also having to reduce, for budget reasons, the
amount of time staffers not formally assigned to investigative reporting are able to
devote to such work.”

Background

Herbert Sandler – Chairman

Mr. Sandler and his wife Marion founded Golden West Financial Corporation in
1963. They were Golden West’s Chief Executive Officers and Chairmen of the Board
from 1963 until 2006 when the company was sold to Wachovia Corporation. Under the
Sandlers’ leadership, Golden West became the second largest thrift institution in the
United States and was considered to be one of the best managed financial institutions in
the country by many industry observers. Fortune magazine ranked Golden West as the
nation’s most admired mortgage services company, and on seven separate occasions named
Golden West America’s most admired savings institution. Morningstar, a leading provider
of investment research, named the Sandlers CEOs of the Year in 2004. The Sandlers
are currently Presidents of the Sandler Foundation and Chairmen Emeriti of Golden West
Financial Corporation.

Paul Steiger – Editor-in-Chief

Paul Steiger is currently editor at large for The Wall Street Journal and a vice
president of Dow Jones & Company, the Journal’s publisher. He is also the
chairman of the Committee to Protect Journalists and a trustee of the John S. and James
L. Knight Foundation. After 25 years at the Journal and the Los Angeles Times, Mr.
Steiger was appointed managing editor of the Journal in 1991 and served in that role
until May of this year. Under his leadership, The Wall Street Journal’s
reporters and editors won 16 Pulitzer Prizes.

Mr. Steiger was recently named as the recipient of the 2007 Fourth Estate Award
by the National Press Club. In 2005, he was honored with the “Decade of
Excellence” award from the World Leadership Forum in London. Also in 2005, the
University of Missouri School of Journalism awarded him a Missouri Honor Medal for
distinguished service in journalism. In 2002, Mr. Steiger was selected as the first
recipient of the American Society of Newspaper Editors’ Leadership Award.
Also in 2002, he was awarded the Columbia Journalism Award, given to honor a
“singular journalistic performance in the public interest.” The National Press
Foundation awarded him the 2001 George Beveridge Editor of the Year Award. He was a
member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1998 to 2007, serving as chairman in his final
year. Mr. Steiger personally won two John Hancock awards and three Gerald Loeb Awards for
his economics and business coverage, as well as the 2002 Loeb Award for lifetime
achievement.

Richard Tofel – General Manager

Richard Tofel was formerly the assistant publisher of The Wall Street Journal
and, earlier, an assistant managing editor of the paper (reporting to Mr. Steiger), vice
president, corporate communications for Dow Jones, and an assistant general counsel of
Dow Jones. Most recently, he served as vice president, general counsel &
secretary of The Rockefeller Foundation, and earlier as president and chief operating
officer of The International Freedom Center, a museum and cultural center that was
planned for the World Trade Center site.

sly , excellent letter . Well spoken and from the heart .

#143 Anna7000 on 08.11.08 at 10:17 pm

EWard – saw our post and i’m intrigued. what role do ombudsman play in the media?

#144 vadaryl on 08.11.08 at 10:17 pm

Larry Johnson was just on Ed and MommaE blog radio show and he said that something major could break at the end of this week or early next week that would knock Obama right out of the race. He could not give out any details, he was not sure if the people will release the info but if they do Obama is done.

#145 EWard on 08.11.08 at 10:19 pm

I am not a fan of Dick Morris, but he made some good observations about McCain and *61. McCain came out strong denouncing Russia’s aggression against Georgia.

What does *61 say? Both sides need to tone down the violence. Pumas, day after day the country is seeing the real *61. He doesn’t have a clue how to handle a crisis or speak about it.

Keep up the good work and write your letters to the media, delegates, DP, and so on. This man must be defeated.

#146 Anna7000 on 08.11.08 at 10:20 pm

slyt2 – what a very sweet letter – obviously very heart felt. i wouldn’t change a thing. there are just some punctuation issues. here’s the edited version with the punctuation fixed:

Thank you Ms. Ferraro, for all the wonderful things you have said from the beginning about Hillary. I share your admiration for her. I also would like to thank you for speaking up for woman’s rights. You are a wonderful woman and person. I thought it was horrible what happened to you during the primaries, but I admired the way your loyalty to Hillary never faded. A lot of people would have shied away from the public, but not you. You stood firm in your beliefs and your commitment to Hillary. It broke my heart when you had to step down from her committee, but as a true friend you thought of your friend first. I think you are wonderful. You and Hillary are truly one of the few women who are great role models for woman today and in the future.
Sincerely,

#147 murphy on 08.11.08 at 10:20 pm

great work janelb1950 — I find that just writing the note makes me feel uplifted. It’s weird, but in a good way.

#148 Pookie on 08.11.08 at 10:22 pm

I finished my thank you letter to Geraldine now I need her address I just checked my email and I did not get it

#149 vadaryl on 08.11.08 at 10:22 pm

Check out http://www.plainsradio.com/ or http://hcsfjm.com/

They replay the show all day long until the new show that starts at 8 pm. Larry was on the 2nd hour and made this announcement around 40 or so minutes into his visit. Right after a break.

Right now they have a new show running with MommaE and Christie

#150 Anna7000 on 08.11.08 at 10:22 pm

slyt2 – forgot to break out paragraphs. here are my recommendations. I didn’t change any of your touching words, just broke ideas into 3 paragraphs:

Sincerely,

#151 mzebest on 08.11.08 at 10:22 pm

From downstairs:

To #872 delphinefromfrance

“Hi mzebest ! I don’t know if you are here tonight, as I have just arrived. But I wanted to tell you I have kept my promise : I’ve just translated the video showing Will Bower on a French TV: visible on my site : section “En complément” “Press archives””

~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you so much delphinefromfrance — you’re awesome and I enjoyed reading the translation which helped tremendously to know what was being said.
I hope you see this post…. you’re awesome and I’m so happy you’re a part of this group. Your contributions are wonderful.
For any PUMA’s that are interested… there was an interview of Will Bower with the French media. Delphine posted the interview and wrote an English transcript of what is being said (posted below the video) here:
http://hillary.meilleur.choix.qu-obama.over-blog.com/pages/Press_Archives-579244.html
#152 murphy on 08.11.08 at 10:23 pm
slyt2 — yes you are really good at letters.
feeling the eyes watering now. . .
#153 Vonay on 08.11.08 at 10:23 pm
#46 Jeremy,
rofl @ history of the world… I do that too. :D
#154 EWard on 08.11.08 at 10:24 pm
#141 Anna
Excellent question! The ombudsman for every media organization represents either the voice of its readers or viewers. In the PBS story about Edwards, the reporter kept on mentioning Clark Hoyt the ombudsman of the NYT and his analysis of their coverage.
To me this is the time to write our letters about covering *61. Every Puma knows that he has not been vetted. Just like the story about Edwards, the media brushed it off.
#155 Anna7000 on 08.11.08 at 10:25 pm
EWard – Are you saying that the ombudsman holds a special level of power to push vetting? (Sorry if I’m being thick. This is a hectic time of day in my house.)
#156 ClintonRules on 08.11.08 at 10:25 pm
I’ve written my letter and its in the mail :)
As soon as Hillary suspended her campaign, I had a feeling she wasn’t done and that feeling is stronger now than ever.
I am trying to convince my manager to give me time off so I can go to Denver…she supports *61 but has said she admires my loyalty to Hillary.
She jokes with me about time off now so it’s only a matter of time :)
I have sent about 200 letters to SDs today and I am working on a post on Clintondems
I’m Ky4Hill on Clintondems (future reference lol)
NObama…NOvember…NO Joke.
#157 mzebest on 08.11.08 at 10:26 pm
Murphy — I finally had a chance to listen to your NPR interview. You were so wonderful. Don’t know the other lady’s name — but between the two of you — it was well paced and important points were made. I loved the contributions that both of you were able to bring to the table and the ideas you presented. Excellent representation of the PUMA movement.
#158 slyt2 on 08.11.08 at 10:27 pm
#148 Anna7000 Dang I could have used u doing english class, maybe I would have gotten better then a B- . Thank you TexasTigress and thanks Anna7000 for the input.
Probably been posted but I haven’t had time to catch up . These are the “Clinton e-mails and memos ”
http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200808u/clinton-memos
#160 TrishfromCanada on 08.11.08 at 10:29 pm
can anyone explain to me what “The Clinton Chronicles” are?
#161 slyt2 on 08.11.08 at 10:30 pm
#143 EWard well if the fighting keeps up he can give them a good talking to , I’ve heard he gives great speeches.
#162 maxgrader on 08.11.08 at 10:30 pm
#142 vadaryl:
Johnson needs to wait for something actual rather than play teaseball with people. He used that same kind of stunt by saying news about the Michelle tape would be released. Hasn’t happened yet, has it?
He’s like an article you find about a discovery that “may” lead to a cure to cancer. Why don’t the researchers and doctors just wait unitl a fact is a fact instead of getting people all excited over nothing.
Whenever I see a headline about cancer remedies with the word “may” or “could” or “might” in it I ignore and read elsewhere. It’s just filler news.
That’s how I see Mr. Larry Johnson… nothing more than a filler looking for attention.
#163 MountainSong on 08.11.08 at 10:30 pm
Oh, stop with this stuff about your wife and FOX, Obama. Your wife is your Achille’s Heel and the whole country knows it!!
#164 Anna7000 on 08.11.08 at 10:31 pm
slyt2 – the punctuation is the least. being able to express ideas and feelings with words is a gift. you wrote something beautiful and unique. meanwhile, glad i could help with the minor details.
#165 Anna7000 on 08.11.08 at 10:33 pm
Mountain Song – Your post is making me laugh, because I’m not watching what your watching, but I’m reading your response. It’s kinda like when you’re walking down the street and someone’s talking on their cell phone but you don’t see the phone, you just see and hear the person talking. At first, it’s like, what’s up with this person wallking down the sidewalk having a passionate monologue. Then you realize, oohhhhhhhhh, they’re on the phone.
P.S. Your IMHO has really stuck with me and I love it and think of you whenever I type it!
#166 slyt2 on 08.11.08 at 10:33 pm
#150 murphy hey that’s sly puma to you.. lol thanks a lot.
#167 MountainSong on 08.11.08 at 10:34 pm
Yeya, she’s about as friendly as a starving female Rottweiler with pups.
#168 MountainSong on 08.11.08 at 10:35 pm
163 Anna7000 Awww, lol. ur so sweet. Just the complete opposite of MO. LOL
#169 murphy on 08.11.08 at 10:35 pm
Trish — can you remind everyone of the link to Puma PAC’s new Youtube channel, and to your inspiring and defiant new video?
I’m afraid to go back into my inbox. (just kidding! i am making my way through the emails, i really am!)
#170 MountainSong on 08.11.08 at 10:35 pm
All the above, IMHO. LOL
#171 antifish on 08.11.08 at 10:36 pm
Oh poor Michellle. Waaahhhh! Fox News misrepresents her. Waaahhhh! Give me a break. If you act like Godzilla, is anyone really going to think you’re Jackie O?
#172 vadaryl on 08.11.08 at 10:36 pm
I think we have heard a lot of things that never came true but this time we only have a few more weeks to make a difference.
#173 freddiebrown on 08.11.08 at 10:36 pm
#118 Lets Get It Started :
I enjoyed reading your write up of your encounter with Sen. Clinton and your brilliant photo collage. Isn’t she amazing ? I too gave her a book “A teaspoon of Courage” and she told her assistant keep it and give it to her later.
Sometimes I feel like with her, it is like the middle Eastern fanatics that say they hate America. If they were given a chance to come here, they would think differently. If the Hillary haters were to talk to her, I know they will change their mind about her. A simpleton that I am, I choose to have faith in mankind.
#174 DancesWithPumas on 08.11.08 at 10:37 pm
I may not subscribe to all the angles of focus on the myriad of Obama “issues”, but I’m grateful that Pumas are willing to expend their time (=life), energy (=life), and financial resources, investigating the questions.
If nothing toward results from these investigations, no harm, no foul, and a big thank you to them for their willingness to invest themselves in these examinations.
#175 TrishfromCanada on 08.11.08 at 10:37 pm
Here is the video link, over 380 hits so far, since this morning :P
and again thank you to Amarissa and GoAndersen for helping with it.
Sandi Puma – I can’t think of any investigative reporter – Geraldo is good, Glen Beck doesn’t do investigative like Geraldo but he is a good one to email … me@glenbeck.com
Post Geraldo’s email in case some other PUMA feel like emailing him. You never know when one might just stick.
#177 TrishfromCanada on 08.11.08 at 10:39 pm
Murphy’s audacity video is there as well :)
#178 murphy on 08.11.08 at 10:39 pm
Thanks Trish!
Speaking of cancer, i didn’t know Geraldine Ferraro was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2001. Patients have a survival rate of about five years, yet Ms Ferraro is still kicking and slapping SEVEN years later.
Ladies and gentlemen, this lady is a fighter extraordinaire. I’m so proud of her stands against the odds. No wonder she can do it alone better than most.
What a gal.
#180 MountainSong on 08.11.08 at 10:40 pm
But talk about Rottweilers~~~Ever since I heard earlier that MO is the keynote speaker on opening night of the convention I’ve been upset and chewing on it like a Rotty on a Mailman’s pantleg.
#181 MountainSong on 08.11.08 at 10:43 pm
Typical of Obama, he generally blamed the conservative press, naming FOX, but no individual specifically. He’s such a cowardly fraud.
#182 taggles1 on 08.11.08 at 10:43 pm
MURPHY HAS BO GOING!
You are not going to believe what I found on Craigslist. BO is making a “documentary”. It is going to be well staged and will probably have scripts (we all know that BO likes scripts)
Link:
http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/pol/792176086.html
Posting:
Looking for people to be in a documentary about Barack Obama (Arlington/Lexington/Burlington/Wincheste)
I’m looking to do a documentary on why people support Barack Obama, and I was wondering if any Lexington Residents would be interested in being interviewed about why they support Barack Obama as part of the
documentary. It would be great if I could find the following types of people to be interviewed.
-An elderly man
-A teenage girl who is under 18.
-A teenage girl who is over 18 and has voted in a presidential election.
-A child (male or female) under 14 who supports Barack Obama, as do
their parents.
-A man who supports John McCain
-An independent who supports Barack Obama
-Or anyone else who would like to be in my documentary
If you would like to be interviewed, please respond through craigslist.
Please do not respond if you do not live in Lexington, Arlington, Winchester,Watertown, Belmont, or Burlington
The bo bots are not happy with the you tube group, lol I’ve been counteracting them all day, we’re getting a lot of thumbs down from them lol
#185 murphy on 08.11.08 at 10:45 pm
I’m not worried Mountainsong. Michelle’s approval ratings aren’t very high these days. I’m betting the response will be merely polite.
I think even the bots are sick of the Obamas at this point.
Will Bayh’s Russia G8 Stance Become GOP Fodder?
Dem VP Prospect Closer to McCain than Obama
By TEDDY DAVIS and RIGEL ANDERSON
August 11, 2008
Will Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., support for kicking Russia out of the G8 hurt his chances of being Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., running mate? Will Republicans make a big issue of the vote?
(Michael Conroy/AP Photo)But will Evan Bayh’s vote to kick Russia out of the G8 — something John McCain has proposed that Barack Obama has criticized — become fodder for the McCain campaign?
“Despite what Barack Obama says, John McCain’s strong position on Russia has bipartisan support even from senators reportedly under consideration to be Obama’s VP,” McCain spokesman Brian Rogers tells ABC News.
Although Obama and Bayh have different positions on Russia’s G8 membership (not to mention on the initial authorization to use force in Iraq), the Indiana senator and former governor still brings considerable assets to the table: a rare combination of youth and experience, a centrist record, and tremendous popularity in Indiana.
Obama can also tout Bayh’s work on the “3F’s”: fatherhood, fiscal discipline, and fairness for injured vets.
Here is my note sent on a Thank you card to Geraldine Ferraro:
Dear Ms. Ferraro,
I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that you are not alone, and that you are appreciated by many. Hillary Clinton is lucky to have a friend like you. I was totally disgusted with the lack of respect for Hillary during the primary. I admired your show of strength when you stood by her even though it wasn’t the popular thing to do. You will be remembered and God will bless you for your kindness. Thank you.
Regards,
this email has me so po’ed right about now~ it came from a friend in NC~
Subject: 15 REASONS WHY I AM VOTING DEMOCRATIC!!
1. I’m voting Democrat because I believe the GOVERNMENT will do a better
job of spending the money I earn than I would.
2. I’m voting Democrat because I believe freedom of speech is fine as long
as nobody is offended by it.
3. I’m voting Democrat because I believe when we pull out of Iraq I trust
that the bad guys will stop what they’re doing because they will think we’re good
people.
4. I’m voting Democrat because I believe that people who can’t tell us if
it will rain on Friday, CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away
in ten years and the oceans will rise 100 feet if I don’t start driving a
Prius.
5. I’m voting Democrat because I’m not concerned about the slaughter of
millions of babies In America so long as we don’t execute any murderers
and rapist.
6. I’m voting Democrat because I believe that business should not be
allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give
the rest away to the GOVERNMENT for redistribution as THE
GOVERNMENT sees fit.
7. I’m voting Democrat because I believe three or four pointy headed
elitist liberals need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit
some fringe kooks who would NEVER get their agendas past the voters.
8. I’m voting Democrat because I believe that when the terrorists don’t
have to hide from us over in the mid-east they won’t come over here attack
us.
9. I’m voting Democrat because I don’t want anyone to have any guns in the
house to fight the terrorists off if they do attack us.
10. I’m voting Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry
whatever I want and I’ve decided to marry my horse.
11. I’m voting Democrat because I believe oil companies’ profits of 4% on a
gallon of gas are obscene, but the government taxing the same gallon of
gas at 15% as well as receiving a royalty of 16% on a gallon of oil is OK.
12. I’m voting Democrat because I really believe that it is great that the
citizens of the oil producing countries can drive Mercedes Benz cars and ski in
indoor ski resorts when it is 120 degrees outside using our money.
13. I’m voting Democrat because I cannot support having oil wells off our
shores even though I can’t remember when the last time there was a oil spill from
the off shore rigs even when they were hit by Katrina.
14. I’m voting Democrat because I also support having the ugly windmill farms
scattered across our beautiful country as long as they are not around where
I live.
15. I’m voting Democrat because I believe that their Presidential candidate
is qualified to be the Commander In Chief of our country even though he only
has 143 days of experience as a Senator, even though my children need to
spend more days than that in Kindergarten before they qualify for the 1st
Grade.
Makes you wonder why anyone would EVER vote Republican, now doesn’t it?
*can you believe the stupid reasons listed above?? I had to write her back with a good lashing~ she may never speak to me again after that~ but this was ridiculous!!!
She’s an amazing woman and gracious. I’ve met Hillary in the 90′s when President Bill Clinton was running for office; I was one of his volunteers. Hillary loves to talk with people, she ALWAYS listen and always give you her full attention when she talks with you. Hillary is a deep thinker, she’s one of those people (few can do it), can literally remove herself from any situation and look at it like a third to get a better perspective. Hillary Clinton is a consumate policy wonk. She’s the only First Lady with office next to the Oval Office. Those trials and tribulations she had face during the Clinton Administration can kill an elephant in an instant, but she remained strong and resilient. Those tragic events made her much stronger and more determined to do right with the American people. My support for Hillary goes back to the 90′s.
She will always have my support but I will never vote for NONAME/NOBAMA even if she’s in the ticket. I will never allow her to be insulted by NOBAMA. I find it demeaning, disrespectful towards her.
Hello Pumas,
I revised my letter to the Swing State Super Delegate and will mail it tomorrow on my Puma letterhead. I am attaching a copy of it.
8/11/08
PUMA Pac
Contact: Murphy@pumapac.org
Dear Swing State Super Delegate,
Senator Clinton won the primary election in your state. Your constituents overwhelmingly chose Senator Clinton over Senator Obama. It is my understanding that you will be casting your delegate vote for Obama at the convention. I strongly oppose Senator Obama receiving delegate votes from a state that Senator Clinton won.
Our votes are sacred. The Founding Fathers created a system of one person, one vote. When an elected representative preempts the judgment of their own voters, trust in our government is broken. More significantly, Senator Clinton is the best Democratic candidate to represent Democrats and win the Presidency. As you know, winning your state is CRUCIAL for the Democrats to regain the White House.
The recent crisis between Russia and Georgia demonstrates why it is crucial to have a Democratic nominee ready to lead. The contrast between Senator McCain and Senator Obama are significant. McCain denounced Russia’s aggression and Obama offered words of appeasement. Senator Obama is unqualified to lead this country. Day after day, Americans are putting their trust in Senator McCain.
The country is eager to elect a Democratic President but that person is Senator Clinton. We need delegates that will stand up to the party bosses and carry the Voice of the Voters to the Convention and VOTE for the candidate who can win it for us in your crucial state in November.
I am a Democrat and a member of Puma PAC, People United Means Action (http://blog.pumapac.org). We are the Voice of the Voters in the Democratic Party and we will do everything we can to stop the party bosses from forcing YOU to select an unprepared and preposterously weak candidate in Denver.
Thank you.
But my personal favorites are Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame, who still are big supporters. Whereas some of the above have now defected to O’s camp.
Betting Carole King, Rob Reiner, Jack Nicholson and Ellen are all also still big Hillary supporters.
I know McCain is a patriot who loves his country, but what would really show me that he loves this country more than anything would be if he were to release something NOW rather than after the convention…
he must know that *61 is BAD, and there’s still that chance that he could win the GE…you’d think someone who loves this country as much as McCain obviously does would not want to take that chance.
You’d think he’d (McCain) would rather Hillary win if he (McCain) didn’t. Am I making sense?
I agree with the above comment that says McCain probably supported Hillary over *61…
Country BEFORE party Sen. McCain…waiting until after the convention (if the SDs dont do what needs to be done) wouldn’t help the country.
its so frustrating…i know what i mean but its so difficult to put down in words…
#289 Anna7000 on 08.12.08 at 12:02 am
EWard – Geez, the media missed the boat on pretty much everything. There’s so much that’s swirling around and it’s hard to tease apart fact from rumor from theory from….. It’s virtually impossible to do as a little person. It’s the media’s job to send investigative reporters to do their job. But the press has shown no interest in doing so all year long. Crazy. Even this issue with Obama’s relationship with Odinga is something so worthy of investigation, but, as usual, nothing. Hard to know why the press would take interest now, but there’s surely no harm in advocating for them to look into various matters.
#293 Anna7000 on 08.12.08 at 12:06 am
Clinton Rules – This is politics. People and parties play to win. No way would McCain and the GOP do anything to influence the Democratic nominee such that it would be someone they’d prefer they didn’t go up against. We wouldn’t want or expect Clinton or her campaign to be that naive and I wouldn’t expect McCain or anyone else’s to be so. It’s ruthless. It’s about power.
And, I share your frustration completely. I just don’t think I have the same rationale underpinning how I get to that frustration. But, I join you in feeling that way. It’s hard. Draining. Hang in there.
#294 TexasTigress on 08.12.08 at 12:06 am
Ok , Kittens , here’s my letter to Ferraro … Be nice damn it !
Ms. Ferraro ,
I am writing to thank you for your unwavering support and loyalty to Sen. Clinton throughout this entire political process .
Sen. Clinton is the rightful nominee . She is the right choice for our Party . The right choice for our Country , and you have helped to pave her way .
Your undiluted resolve when being confronted by friends , peers , and colleagues who have chosen to ignore even the most basic principles of Democracy has inspired millions of us to seek that same strength in ourselves .
We too have chosen to stand for what we believe in . To call subterfuge and misogyny by name , and to shine our lights on the corrupt practices of a leadership that has failed to adhere to the values of equality and justice that we hold dearly . We are Pumas .
We are a part of a larger group , but in the end , we are one . One woman , one man , one voter , one American , one PERSON who refuses to fall in line , to sit in the back of the bus , or to be herded like cattle to our own destruction . We are one person , and we want what we are guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States , one vote .
I believe that , because of your example , guidance , and tireless pursuit of equality in the Democratic process , we are very close to righting wrongs , to being heard , and ,ultimately , to making history . For these things , and so much more , I Thank You .
Sincerely ,
************
Hi Everyone: Once again if you want to E-mail the National Enquirer, the only news org to pay attention to the Edwards story and ask them to print an article on BOs birth Certificate, and a time line on where he lived and when here is the link. At the bottom of this page is a window where you can type your suggestion. This sort of story should sell papers and it would be best if they do it early next week.
#306 Anna7000 on 08.12.08 at 12:15 am
dances – well said. and, no way? dk was my first choice as well. funny (sort of) story. I was so eager to cast my vote. i got my ballot (i always vote absentee) way ahead of the deadline, as usual. but as the days and weeks passed, i started feeling really compulsive about completing and submitting my ballot, even though i had plenty of time. (i’m neurotic, what can i say?) so, i filled it out and brought it to the town hall and put it in the ballot box. i get home and a few hours after i dropped it off kucinich announced he was withdrawing from the race. i made a million calls to see if there was any way, any way, at all, please tell me there is a way, to see if i could get it back and get a new ballot (like you can when you “soil” a ballot and request a new one – don’t get me started on that expression), but of course there was no way. thankfully, ca went for clinton so at least i can be proud to know the state i live in supported her, but it was still ssssoooooo frustrating. that’ll teach me for being so compulsive (maybe).
1 – I’m wondering if Ferraro’s address is going out w/tomorrow’s prowl
Calling creative folk…
Please visit my post and add suggestions, take the ball and run or pass it along.
http://www.hillaryclintonforum.net/discussion/showthread.php?t=23287
Please get other creative PUMAs to this post. It’s definitely a game changer. We don’t know when/if whitey tap exists, COLB and other issues will come to light. But putting a concise, hard hitting narrative together in multiple media forms (viral video, flyers etc etc) could tip the scale in our favor reinforcing the buyers remorse that is building.
I put it as the final nail in Barry’s Nat Sec and Foreign Policy coffin.
It would change the game so much that Hillary could be nominate in a lanslide at the convention… imho. :)
Can we sue them for literary fraud???
“Obama Signs Book Deal
Three Rivers Press, a paperback imprint of Crown Publishing, will publish Sen. Barack Obama’s latest book, “Change We Can Believe In: Barack Obama’s Plan to Renew America’s Promise.”
Crown, a division of Random House Inc., itself a unit of Bertelsmann AG, also published Mr. Obama’s “Dreams From My Father” and “The Audacity of Hope.” According to the presidential candidate’s literary representative, Washington attorney Robert Barnett, the contract is between Crown and the senator’s campaign, not Mr. Obama himself.”
billie jo – thanks for the scoop on gogandolf.
texas tigress – i agree the msm is utterly biased, but it doesn’t mean i can trust the national enquirer or any other news outlet, either. sorry, i’m a very skeptical person. makes life tough sometimes.
#379 hillstheone on 08.12.08 at 12:48 am
NY PUMA
Not sure if you’re addressing my post to anti.
I know what you’re saying but the National Enquirer is sued all the time, that’s part of the reason msm didn’t jump on their story right away.
My point being, we don’t want to get sued, we just want someone else (like a pseudo-reporter or real reporter since the NE apparently does have real reporters) to go sniff out the facts.
You can submit news tips or ideas on their website, that’s what it’s there for.
#380 sandipuma on 08.12.08 at 12:49 am
Well the last letter is done unless you can think of another anchor or investigating reporter .
#381 BillieJo on 08.12.08 at 12:50 am
Can anyone point me to a post with a short and sweet note to Geraldine? I am so tired I can’t come up with anything meaningful. Thanks.
#382 sandipuma on 08.12.08 at 12:51 am
I wrote them yesterday and did it quite tactfully
#383 hillstheone on 08.12.08 at 12:51 am
TexasTigress: I do agree with you that the msm probably feels & definitely looks very foolish right now that the NE had to break the Edwards story..
On the other hand these are the kinds of newsstories I hate because they detract from other stories I feel are more important to the average American.
With regards to media in general, I’m so proud of our PUMA movement, & the effect it is having on msm these days. I think our roar is starting to be heard, finally.
Convention 2 weeks away: Good Timing ? ? ! ! !
#384 Amarissa on 08.12.08 at 12:51 am
First: I also second the motion on the Enquirer and Antifish! The Enquirer now is very popular and credible with the Edwards affair and we should take advantage of this fact.
Second: If this is true, even if O is the official nominee at the Convention (God forbid), he would be taken down and Hillary would go up as nominee.
Third: If, God forbid, he wins the elections and Hillary is the VP (I think he has no choice but to nominate her), he would be impeached and Hillary would be President.
What I mean is, no matter how long the investigation takes, we have good probabilities to suceed at the end!
#385 Anna7000 on 08.12.08 at 12:52 am
pa dem – thanks for posting that link. my god. this is starting to feel like black listing. it just gets crazier and crazier, no?
# 376 billie jo – do you have to be black to be in your group, cause i’m as white as they get. any whiter and i’d be clear. i’m a prime candidate for skin cancer. i have photos of myself as a child in the beach town where i grew up at the beach, under an umbrella, wearing layers of lightweight summer clothes. i wondered then, why even bother? sheesh.
I would just like to take a minute of your time to thank you for being such an outspoken, gracious and articulate speaker on behalf of women and on behalf of Senator Clinton.
Then just say “I’ll never forget how you stood up for Hillary during the primaries and wish you continued success” etc..
Be sure to thank Geraldine for all she has done for us as well as Senator Clinton. Let her know how you respect her for her strenth and standing up for her freedom of speech nice things like that also let her know you are a Puma for Hillary hope that helps. Make it personal
#390 DancesWithPumas on 08.12.08 at 12:54 am
If I can’t vote for teh winner of the Democratic primaries, Senator Clinton, then I will wait and see which way my state is leaning.
If it’s a close election, I’ll vote for McCain to stop Obama, if not, I’ll cast for Cynthia McKinney.
Either way, I will be voting my values.
Billie Jo – You’re welcome to use my note as a template. There are a lot of other really terrific ones on this thread, but good luck scrolling through searching for them if you want more choices:
I want to thank you for your ardent support of Senator Clinton. Your voice has been a beacon of sanity amidst what has become a shameful Democratic Party process that has left me in a state of shock and disbelief.
Thank you for having the integrity and vision to stand by your convictions. Thank you for being willing to speak truth to power. Thank you for your abiding support of Senator Clinton and women everywhere, be they running for the highest office in the land or trying to get a minimum wage job.
Your voice continues to cut through the madness and represents so honestly and so eloquently what so many of us are fighting for.
you don’t go around spreading innuendos or unsubstantiated rumors about a major candidate for political office …a libel and slander judgement made against you could ruin your life..
all I am saying is to be extremely careful with the natl inquirer sponsoring this BC matter unless you have some substantial proof other wise you’re setting yourself up for a huge fall..
and believe me the cowardly natl inquirer will give obamas attorneys the names and addresses of the accusers
dances – i have the same strategy. though, i must say i’m a little nervous about it this year just because of the way things have been going. but, i think you and i live in the same state and the chances of it going for mc cain are pretty slim, wouldn’t you think. so, that will give us the freedom to register our voice in a different way. i’ve thought how it would really be a drag to live in a state that wouldn’t afford me that much flexibility.
dances – caught your response before shutting down. yup. thought of that as well. if mc cain got a lot more votes than anyone would expect from our state it would send a message. but then, doubt the dnc would care much. and then there’s the whole, geez, can i really bring myself to vote for mc cain. i think there’s a lot of idealizing about him right now for obvious reasons, but truly, he represents ideals and values that are significantly out of line with my own. i figure i’ll just cross that bridge when i get to it.
What will Clinton say? Party awaits her words
Globe and Mail Update
August 11, 2008 at 9:45 PM EDT
Hillary Clinton supporters cried foul during the seemingly never-ending primaries this spring when several talking heads compared the candidate to the obsessed, unkillable character played by Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction.
Her campaign may now be long dead, but Ms. Clinton continues to haunt the Democratic Party and its presumptive presidential candidate, Barack Obama, and many wonder whether she will use the approaching convention in Denver to boost or to undermine her former opponent.
Both Ms. Clinton and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, have been given headline speaking roles at the Democratic National Convention in two weeks.
Ms. Clinton will speak on Aug. 26, the 88th anniversary of the women’s right to vote, and Mr. Clinton is expected to speak the following night, the same evening as the as-yet-unnamed vice-presidential nominee.
The announcement of the couple’s high-profile convention roles came from the Obama camp over the weekend, before an article in the September issue of The Atlantic, released Tuesday, offered new revelations about Clinton campaign strategies against Mr. Obama during the primaries.
The piece, called “The Front-Runner’s Fall” by senior editor Joshua Green, contains various leaked campaign e-mails from Clinton strategist Mark Penn suggesting that Mr. Obama be painted as un-American.
“I cannot imagine America electing a president during a time of war who is not at his center fundamentally American in his thinking and in his values,” Mr. Penn wrote in one message.
“Every speech should contain the line you were born in the middle of America to the middle class in the middle of the last century. And talk about the basic bargain as about the deeply American values you grew up with, learned as a child and that drive you today,” he said in another.
The tactic was not adopted by Ms. Clinton, but the article is likely to stir up some of the intense animosity that exists between the two campaigns and their supporters.
Some observers also worry that the New York senator may use her convention role to advance her own agenda, rather than to articulate her support for Mr. Obama.
“The presidential candidate would obviously like her to say, ‘This is just the greatest person in the world and I’ve seen the error of my ways and you should vote for him,’ ” said Gerald Pomper, a professor emeritus of political science at Rutgers University. “But the other candidate may have other motives and sour feelings.”
Mr. Pomper, the author of seven books about presidential elections including one about party conventions called Nominating the President, said that political party A-listers are historically given prominent roles at conventions, but can often serve as an undermining presence.
In 1964, Bobby Kennedy appeared at the Democratic convention in support of nominee Lyndon Johnson, and then proceeded to blow him out of the water with a tribute to his late brother, John. F. Kennedy.
In 1980, Ted Kennedy withdrew his name from nomination but then delivered a speech that made only one fleeting reference to the victorious candidate, Jimmy Carter.
Mr. Pomper believes that Ms. Clinton has little to gain from being ungracious, and that her husband is more likely to use the convention pulpit to settle old scores.
“With Bill, we don’t ever know what he’s going to do. And he feels more attacked and unfairly treated than she does,” he said.
Mr. Clinton is expected to address the convention on a day dedicated to national security, which has been given the theme “Securing America’s Future.”
Some expect the former president to instead protest against the characterization of his controversial role in his wife’s campaign, and try to salvage her political future.
“The worst thing he could say is that you’re nominating the wrong person and that we’ll be back in four years,” Mr. Pomper said.
But not everyone wants to wait four years.
Whether Ms. Clinton will be a disruptive a presence at the convention also depends on whether she submits her name for a role-call vote on the nomination, a process that would allow her supporters to vote for her before, presumably, rallying around Mr. Obama.
Some Clinton backers have formed an organization called the Denver Group, which is pushing for such a vote. The group took out an ad in the Chicago Tribune yesterday threatening a “genuine revolt of more than 18 million voters” if Ms. Clinton’s name is not placed in nomination at the convention.
PUMAS
Didn’t hear much about the DNC Platform committe, however, I knew they were on C-Span a lot last week. I was painting a house (still am) so I missed a lot. Found an article written this weekend that summed the meeting up.
From the Los Angeles Times
Obama partisans block Clinton faction bid to end caucuses
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
8:55 PM CDT, August 9, 2008
PITTSBURGH – Hillary Rodham Clinton loyalists tried Saturday to kill off the caucus system that proved so damaging to her presidential bid, but were beaten back by a Democratic Party leadership firmly under the command of Barack Obama.
Democrats who supported Clinton’s candidacy pushed to amend the new party platform so that caucuses would be banned in future presidential nominating contests.
But the party’s platform committee refused to allow the amendment to come up for a vote or even a discussion. Co-chair Patricia Madrid, a former New Mexico attorney general, said the matter would instead be taken up at later date by the party’s Rules Committee.
That left Clinton supporters disappointed. They contend that if the party were serious about enfranchising more voters, it would take a clear position against a caucus system that discourages participation by shift workers, the disabled and overseas members of the military. In traditional primaries, people have all day to vote. But a caucus might last just a few hours.
During the Democratic race, Obama outmaneuvered Clinton in Iowa and many other states that held caucuses, turning out far more supporters and racking up enough delegates to give him an insurmountable lead.
“My feeling is the issue should have been aired and people should have had the opportunity to speak and vote it up or down,” Bob Remer, a delegate for Clinton from Chicago and member of the platform committee, said in an interview Saturday. Remer had put forward the amendment that was shelved. “The caucus system is the exact opposite of everything I’ve been fighting for in terms of maximizing democratic input.”
The 186-member committee voted to recommend adoption of a new Democratic platform — the party’s formal statement of policies and principles. Final approval will come when the party’s presidential convention meets in Denver on Aug. 25-28.
Clinton supporters were hoping to influence the draft in ways that reflect her interests. For its own sake, the Obama campaign would like to accommodate the Clinton forces where it can. With Republican John McCain keeping the general election contest close, Obama needs to unify Clinton voters behind his cause.
So the platform is a mixed bag. In a section devoted to expanding opportunity for women, the document says that Democrats are proud “that we have put 18 million cracks in the highest glass ceiling,” a respectful reference to Clinton’s vote total in the primary.
But Obama, now in control of the Democratic Party machinery, clearly enjoys the greatest influence over the document. The platform reflects many of his policy goals and even borrows language from his stump speech. “Our planet is in peril,” reads the preamble.
(Optional add end)
One of the defining policy differences he had with Clinton involved health care. Clinton wanted a requirement that people carry health insurance; Obama did not.
The platform includes no mention of a health insurance mandate. But as a concession to Clinton supporters, it does include language that acknowledges, “There are different approaches within the Democratic Party about how best to achieve the commitment of universal coverage.”
Platform committee leaders insisted that Clinton was given a role in shaping the document. At some point, party officials will decide the future of the caucus system. But a paragraph in the platform is not the best way to settle the matter, they said.
Tensions between the Obama and Clinton forces were evident at the Convention Center here, where the meeting took place. Clinton’s supporters sat together in the audience, wearing campaign buttons and T-shirts bearing her name. When Obama’s name was mentioned, one person hissed.
Among the Democratic activists serving on the committee, there were also signs of a split.
Lynn Forester de Rothschild, the head of a private holding company and a member of the committee, took the microphone after the caucus amendment was defeated to register a protest.
After the meeting, she said she still hasn’t made up her mind about whether to vote for Obama because she doesn’t “understand how a person comes to the U.S. Senate and — before they’ve done one thing there — decides they can be president.”
“I have serious questions about Barack Obama and what the Democratic Party is doing,” she said. “I have serious issues with Barack Obama.”
I know that PUMAS on the west coast have occasionally asked that something be done to accommodate the many of us that are on the far reaches of the time zone. Understandably, Murphy and a majority of PUMAs need to sleep. When we west coasters get on after a full day of work, etc., a lot of the prowls have been completed or are old news. Lots of times, its too late by our time zone to follow through with prowls that are time sensitive. I do wish we had a coordinator by time zones (mountain/pacific would be good) just for those prowls and important information. I know, it means someone taking it on and coordinating with Murphy. And by most accounts, this entry will probably not be read by many people. I know where you are so I really am proud of you for your determination to be on the blog most of the time especially with the medical issues. Take care of yourself.
Apparently McCain’s ad about Obama being a celebrity has hit a sore note on Obama… here’s an article on it:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080812/ap_on_el_pr/candidates_ads;_ylt=AgZ8antdm41UixFjA4ImcGBh24cA
But what really cracks me up is Obama’s attempt to do his ad as an answer to the celebrity thing… and he tries to portray McCain as a celebrity and shallow. Not only does this ad fail miserably but it was cracking me up at such a stupid attempt:
PUMA (the cat) reminds me of a story, a good bedtime story.
Once upon a time, my mother was taking my sister to the school bus stop a mile from the house. They walked through a deep, dark forest near Mt. Rainier in WA State. It was early in the morning with the sun’s rays filtering through the forest canopy. A high screech sounded through the forest tops overhead as they crunched through the fall leaves and needles. After two days of hearing this noise, my father with rifle in hand, followed my mother and sister through the forest. Hearing the screech again, my father looked skyward. On a limb high above was perched a mountain lion (PUMA), crying in the wilderness. He waved my mother and sister to quickly return to the house and he raised his gun to shoot not at the PUMA, but into the trees above to scare it away. My dad never could kill an animal. The next day, the US Forest Service Ranger came with some bounty hunters and found the PUMA on the same limb, same time of day. Yes, the PUMA was killed. They said that the PUMA would probably have attacked sooner or later because he or she was old and hungry (lean). Now, this is a story told by my parents and sister. Today, there lays a camping park below the limbs of that forest. There is no house, nor any hunters, but there still can be found a screech early in the morning somewhere in the forest that still covers the area. Maybe its the call of the PUMA that lays in wait.
More reading for early rising PUMAS:
3 Obama-bashing titles sell well
by Hillel Italie
Aug. 12, 2008 12:00 AM
Associated Press
NEW YORK – Going negative against Democrat Barack Obama isn’t just a campaign strategy for Republican John McCain. It’s also a good formula for selling books.
Three anti-Obama releases were in the top 40 of Amazon.com’s best-seller list on Monday, despite little critical attention or mainstream media coverage.
“There’s a pent-up demand from people on the right side of the aisle who feel that the mainstream media is effusively covering Barack Obama and not critically covering him,” says Marji Ross, president and publisher of the conservative Regnery Publishing, Inc., which just released David Fredosso’s The Case Against Barack Obama.
Until recently, the most widely read narrative of Obama’s life was written by Obama, in the million-selling Dreams From My Father and The Audacity of Hope. The new releases, like McCain’s campaign ads, attempt a counter-narrative.
The subtitles are the giveaway: Jerome Corsi’s The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality, Fredosso’s The Case Against Barack Obama: The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media’s Favorite Candidate and Dick Morris’ Fleeced: How Barack Obama, Media Mockery of Terrorist Threats, Liberals Who Want to Kill Talk Radio, the Do-Nothing Congress, Companies That Help Iran, and Washington Lobbyists for Foreign Governments Are Scamming Us . . . and What to Do About It.
The authors allege that Obama is not a benign spokesman for hope and unity, but an ideologue with close ties to 1960s radicals and the Chicago political machine. Corsi is already known as a co-author of Unfit for Command, the influential attack against the war record of Sen. John Kerry, the Democrats’ presidential candidate in 2004. Fredosso is a reporter for National Review Online, while Morris is a former aide to President Clinton who has since made a career of bashing Democrats.
“With book like these, the minute some people know they’re out there, they must have them,” says Cal Morgan, a vice president and executive editor at HarperCollins who worked on Morris’ book and, at the other end of the spectrum, Michael Moore’s Stupid White Men.
Steve Ross, president and publisher of the Collins division of HarperCollins, released Obama’s books when Ross was head of the Crown Publishing Group at Random House Inc. He thinks that the audience for anti-Obama books will grow through the fall, but doubts that sales will reach the levels of the senator’s own books.
“The anti-Obama readership is largely one that has already made up its mind and is looking for validation, while the Obama readership comprises both those who have already made up their minds and those who are curious about him,” Ross says.
Fredosso’s book, which came out last week, has nearly 300,000 copies in print. The Corsi book, released a week earlier, is in its third printing, with a total of 375,000 copies in print. Fleeced, released in June and in its eighth printing, has 210,000 copies. Books taking on the Bush administration, including Jane Mayer’s The Dark Side, are selling well, but no anti-McCain works are currently attracting attention.
“Obama is a fresh subject – it’s all new ground,” says Peter Osnos, founder of PublicAffairs, which released Scott McLellan’s What Happened, a best-selling criticism of Bush by the president’s former press secretary. “McCain doesn’t have the same kind of resonance, it’s nothing in comparison, because you can still shape people’s view of Obama, but it’s way too late to shape their view of McCain.”
The anti-Obama books share not just a point of view, but a path to success that has worked for both liberals and conservatives- online word of mouth and appearances with sympathetic interviewers, such as Fox News’ Sean Hannity, who has had Corsi, Fredosso and Morris on his show. Ross says that Hannity is not just an interviewer, but an “enthusiast for books” who “gets people excited about the idea of reading a book.”
“Books from both the left and the right often work this way,” Morgan says, noting that Moore’s book was also a best-seller.
An More reading material for early PUMA risers:
Obama without his script
Judging by his reaction to the Georgia-Russia crisis, Obama’s make-believe presidency isn’t ready for prime time.
Jonah Goldberg
August 12, 2008
The Obama campaign has for months pursued the odd strategy of having the junior senator from Illinois act as if he were already kinda-sorta president of the United States. In June, it tried sticking a quasi-presidential seal on his lectern. Then in July, he conducted what seemed like official state visits with foreign leaders and delivered something like a “prenaugural” address in Berlin, inviting comparisons to JFK and Reagan.
It’s an understandable ploy. More than most candidates, Barack Obama needs to appear like a plausible commander in chief because he’s not only inexperienced (during the last Summer Olympics he was still an Illinois state legislator), he’s novel. The name, the skin color, the cosmopolitan upbringing: Fair or not, all of these things give Obama the aura of otherness that is both part of his charm and a potential handicap.
If the would-be president can seem plausibly presidential, voting for him might not seem like such a crapshoot. It all makes sense, even if it fosters an air of presumptuousness.
(David Letterman recently offered a list of the top 10 signs Obama is overconfident. Among them: “Asked guy at Staples, ‘Which chair will work best in an oval-shaped office?’ “; “Having head measured for Mt. Rushmore;” and “Offered McCain a job in gift shop at the Obama Presidential Library.”)
Now fate has given Obama a chance to be presidential rather than pretend. Taking advantage of the Olympic distraction in Beijing, the Russians invaded South Ossetia, a territory on the north side of Georgia, a democratic U.S. ally. Out of the blocks, the Russians bombed civilians, rolled tanks across an internationally recognized border and threatened to launch an all-out, destabilizing war. Now it looks as if their army has cut Georgia in two.
Moreover, Russian bombs reportedly targeted the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which runs through Georgia on its way to the Mediterranean — the only oil pipeline in Central Asia not under Russian control. Russia is tightening its chokehold on oil and gas at precisely the moment energy costs have become the paramount domestic issue in the U.S. presidential campaign.
Obama’s response?
First, late Thursday evening, he gave a conventional written statement calling for calm, U.N. action and “restraint” from both sides — followed an hour later by a slightly stronger condemnation of Russian aggression and a call for a cease-fire.
The invasion of Georgia elicited a wan written communique instead of the sort of exciting rhetoric we’ve come to expect from his make-believe presidency. But he did make it in front of the cameras the next day for a rally celebrating his vacation in Hawaii. He promised “to go body surfing at some undisclosed location.”
During Obama’s make-believe presidency, we’ve heard about bold action, about the courage to talk to dictators. When faced with a real “3 a.m. moment,” Obama — who boasts about 200 foreign policy advisors, broken into 10 subgroups — proclaims, “I’m going to get some shave ice.”
Now, of course, this is a bit unfair in that Obama had planned his no doubt well-deserved vacation for a very long time. But presidential vacations are always well planned — and often interrupted.
Indeed, President Bush’s jaunt to the Olympics as a “sports fan” should also have been cut short the moment tanks started rolling over a country he’d proclaimed a “beacon of liberty” during his visit there in 2005. By Monday, both Bush and Obama were playing catch-up to Sen. John McCain, who seemed to have grasped the gravity from the get-go and whose support for Georgia is long-standing. He took the lead from the outset, demanding on Friday morning an emergency meeting of NATO and Western aid to the fledgling democracy.
The geopolitical significance of Russia’s invasion of Georgia at this stage is hard to gauge. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin may not wish to revive the Soviet Union or the Cold War, but he clearly seeks to restore Russia’s imperial stature. And Item One on that agenda is to crush Georgia’s independence and smother hopes for NATO’s expansion to Russia’s “near abroad.”
The campaign significance for Obama is easier to calculate. He has been playacting at being presidential in order to convince voters that we live in a “new moment” with “new challenges” — and that he is the president we need for this new era.
This moment calls for more than playacting, yet Obama looks lost without a presidential script. Events in the Caucasus — and, for that matter, in Beijing — suggest that the times aren’t so new after all. Two powerful antidemocratic foes are once again flexing their muscles at a moment when America seems weak and distracted.
That is not a new challenge but a very old one. Perhaps this is not a time for a novice spouting grand rhetoric about a new page in history, but for someone who’s actually read the pages of some old, but still relevant, books. Perhaps this is not the time for playacting.
Perhaps it is not the time for body surfing?
Penn in December 2007 on Plan for Two-Way Race Against Obama: “Release the Tapes”
August 11, 2008 8:17 PM
In a December 30, 2007 memo written on the eve of the Iowa caucuses, Mark Penn writes to his fellow Clinton staffers that after the caucuses, if Obama “is riding a high we will have to take him down.”
He runs through a series of potential attacks against Obama — he has taken a bunch of liberal positions that make him unelectable, has been inconsistent on Iraq, has flip-flopped on issues, and voted present a number of times in the Illinois legislature instead of taking a position.
Then, playing out a number of scenarios, Penn writes that if they come out of Iowa and it’s a two-way race with Obama, “on Friday we do a media interviews (sic) and basically say that he is unvetted, discuss his ever-changing positions. Release the tapes. Create immediate pressure that deprives him of oxygen.’
“Release the tapes”????
What tapes?
Goor morning Pumas,
This is the best I could do with my Thank You to Geraldine Ferraro:
Dear Geraldine Ferraro,
I appreciate your continued efforts to obtain equality for all women voters. You have been a staunch adversary for the removal of discrimination in the political arena.
You are historically the first woman to run for the position of the Vice President of the United States of America. You also stood at the side of the first woman, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, in her unprecedented campaign for the President of the United States.
I wish to Thank You for your continued support advocating that women can, and one day will, fill the highest position of this nation with dignity.
Yours humbly,
#546 SparkForHill on 08.12.08 at 8:32 am
Let’s go Pumas. This is from a high school senior:
The participation of Hillary Clinton in the presidential election makes many people think that women have gained so many privileges since the ratification of the 19th Amendment which permitted woman’s suffrage that we have already reached an ideal world in which women have the same rights and capacities as men do.
However, in my opinion, it is still a man’s world since the man-dominant society is a tradition which is very difficult to modify. There is a lot of vocabulary in our society which can show sexism. For example, in many languages, masculine gender generally represents all including female gender. Therefore, this type of language limits our thoughts making us think automatically that men are more important than women. In addition, there are also some words like fireman, chairman and air-hostess which illustrate discrimination. Hence, people have these words replaced with other more convenient ones like firefighter, chairperson and flight-attendant.
With respect to work, this type of discrimination is more visible. Generally, a woman who does the same work as a man does receive a lower wage. Apart from this, it is quite difficult for women to be promoted since they are considered to have a lack of capacity of organization in spite of the fact they are very diligent and can work very efficiently. In addition, women, especially those young ones, have more handicaps to find a good job as they may need maternity leave. Added to this, there are several professions like taxi and bus drivers which are especially for men.
Concerning sports, men’s games are the most popular ones. For example, even though there are both football games, a male soccer match is much more attractive and exciting than a female one. Moreover, male players generally earn more money than female players.
In the area of family, children’s surnames generally follow that of their father’s regardless of the fact that their mother is the one who gives them birth. Thus, considering this, many countries like Uruguay decides to obligate families to put surnames of father and mother to their children to solve this discriminatory problem. It is also a tradition that women should stay at home doing housework meanwhile her husband should go out to earn enough livings to maintain the family. In spite of change in time, this tradition remains in many cultures establishing an ideal family model for young people to follow. In some societies such as the Arab one, women are prohibited to go out without something to cover their faces. These societies are so religious and conservative that there are almost no changes in women’s rights from antiquity.
All in all, it is impossible for modern society to achieve absolute equality between women and men but we can improve this problem by making women have more civil rights and social respect.
This is already going on here in many states. That is why so many muslims are quietly asserting themselves in the political spectrum. There are muslim activists at almost all major colleges and universities. You can “google” each state and prepare yourself for a shock.
Wow! There are already 500 comments here, so I’m probably way late. But here’s my thank you note to Geraldine Ferraro.
Dear Ms. Ferraro:
My husband and I were discussing Obama yesterday, and we agreed that if he were white there would be no reason for him to have the support he has. He doesn’t have relevant experience OR good judgment.
And then I remember your statement in the Daily Breeze, “If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position.”
Geraldine, you were RIGHT! We know it, you know it … the whole country is going to show that they know it in November.
Thank you for telling the truth then. And thank you for continuing to tell the truth this past weekend when you spoke out against the double standard used against women.
Best regards
ok, here’s my letter to Geraldine Ferraro:
Dear Ms. Ferraro,
Thank you for having the courage and conviction to stand up for yourself and women everywhere. I have always admired your determination to not allow the negative forces that exist in the rank and file to stop you from speaking out. Through your words and actions you raise the bar for women and men everywhere to climb out of their comfort level and fight for equality.
It is worrisome and frightening that we live in a world where women such as you, Senator Clinton and many others, who have attempted to advance themselves politically, are degraded and prejudiced simply because they are women who present themselves as women. I am convinced if these same women entered the playing field showing only masculine characteristics and behavior, the media and political leaders would never have attacked so readily or with such vile sexism.
Again, thank you for your strength and generosity in standing up for the injustices we see accepted so readily in our society.
Colorado Democrats Threaten Delegate’s
DENVER, Colo. — An e-mail sent from the Political Director of the Colorado Democratic Party threatened the status of a national delegate, alleging she made “disparaging public remarks” about Sen. Barack Obama.
Sacha Millstone of Boulder told CALL7 Investigator John Ferrugia that her comments were critical, but they were not public.
Millstone acknowledged she was frustrated over how the Obama campaign was treating delegates who supported Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and told a fellow delegate, in what she believed was a private e-mail exchange, that she was not sure she could vote for Obama at the Democratic National Convention later this month
The other delegate apparently filed a complaint with the state Democratic Party suggesting Millstone lose her status as a delegate.
Apparently the Political Director of Colorado’s Democratic Party, William Compton, took the suggestion very seriously and told Millstone via e-mail, “You are directed to come in to the Party Headquarters and explain your comments and why you should remain a national delegate…”
Millstone, who worked on the campaign for Hillary Clinton, considered the e-mail a threat.
“I think that one of the reasons I got this letter was to intimidate me,” said Millstone. “It sounded very totalitarian. I thought it sounded undemocratic and I was completely shocked.”
MAILING MY LETTER TO MS FERRARO THIS MORNING!
August 12, 2008
Mrs. Ferraro
I shall open my letter to you with a quote;
To be somebody, you must last.
Ruth Gordon
You, Ms. Ferraro sure are somebody!
As a Canadian and a long support of the Clintons I commend you for you testicular fortitude, as a political supporter once described Hillary. You are definitely in her league.
I am one of the International Pumas that support Senator Clinton. The only thing, I cannot do is vote for her and apparently donate to her campaign; but I have 20 friends and relatives living in America and they hear from me constantly.
As a feminist we in our younger days won a few battles but I fear the younger generation is just coasting on those won issues. Perhaps, this election has awoken the sleeping Puma in all of us and she will not rest for a long time from now on!
God bless and thank you for taking a stance and God Bless America!
Respectfully yours,
#571 DawnE on 08.12.08 at 9:26 am
Here’s mine.
Ms. Ferraro,
I am writing as short a note as I can, to say Thank YOU! For standing up for Hillary, for standing up for women, for standing up alone and publicly stating that the double standard for women competing for public office must stop.
This morning I read the obituary for a friend I knew from Mass. She too stood up for women’s’ rights. This is a short excerpt from that obituary.
Sylvia Bowman was a courageous fighter for the rights of women and children, including incest survivors. In 1967, she became a social worker for the State of Massachusetts and a member of Local 509 of the Service Employees International Union. Sylvia ran for president of Local 509 in 1987 and experienced outrageously disrespectful tactics used by her opponent’s campaign. She filed charges of sexual harassment and in 1995 won her case in the Massachusetts Supreme Court.
So as you can see, in 2007-2008, we are no better off in the war for a fair and equal right to pursue any high office, than we were in 1987. But Sylvia showed us that we can wage and win, battle by battle, if we pursue, and continue to fight for equal rights. Women like you, and like Hillary, remind us it’s a battle worth fighting for.
Explain, Dems tell Clinton delegate
E-mail challenges Clinton backer; she wonders where free speech went
By Allison Sherry
The Denver Post
Sacha Millstone of Boulder has hired a lawyer after a Democratic Party e-mail ordered her to come to headquarters and explain disparaging remarks she made about Barack Obama. A Clinton supporter, she hired an attorney who wrote the party asking for the rules that allow the party to threaten a person’s removal from the state delegation. Party officials say the issue has been dropped. (RJ Sangosti, file photo )The Colorado Democratic Party would like Boulder delegate Sacha Millstone, who is devoted to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, to give up her spot as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
Party officials said Monday that they won’t insist Millstone resign. But in an e-mail last week, Billy Compton, state political director of the Colorado Democratic Party, ordered Millstone into his office to explain disparaging comments she made about Barack Obama.
Compton said the party had received a complaint about Millstone from another delegate.
“You are hereby directed to come in to the party Headquarters and explain your comments and why you should remain a national delegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention in light of these comments,” the letter said.
Millstone, who has hired a lawyer, was infuriated.
“Isn’t there a right to free speech? Isn’t this right in line with our time-honored tradition with the Dems?” she said. “These intimidation tactics have a chilling effect on people feeling comfortable speaking up.”
Millstone’s lawyer wrote Compton asking for the rules that allow the party to threaten removal from the state delegation.
State party officials said Monday that the issue has been dropped.
“testicular fortitude”
Uh. I think “testicular fortitude” is offensive, foremost because it elevates the characteristics associated with “testicles” to some sort of superior level, and by implication, makes it a goal to which some would wish to aspire. For woman feminists, nothing could be further from the truth.
If I was set on using that kind of term at all, I would use “Ovarian fortitude”, to express strength and resistance to oppressive powers. It’s closest to the truth, and far enough from the male mythology of superiority.
Your are missing the point, and why do you always have to be so critical with almost everyone comments….
It was used by a major Clinton supporter who could not find a stong enough word, from his masculine mentality and thus used that expression.
It took a lot of balls for feminist to make a stance,
sorry, if you have taken offense to this word,but get over yourself!
Here is some info on Sacha Millstone (superdelegate from CO mentioned above).
As you can see iin the following link she certainly seems like an accomplished woman. The thought that DNC in CO would feel free to threaten/intimidate her is quite disturbing, though sadly, not surprising.
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday once again shows Barack Obama attracting 45% of the vote while John McCain earns 43%. When “leaners” are included, it’s Obama 48% and McCain 46% (see recent daily results). Tracking Polls are released at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time each day.
Obama is supported by 77% of Democrats while McCain earns the vote from 85% of Republicans. The two candidates are essentially even among unaffiliated voters.
Well I will add to the ongoing collection of letters for Ms Ferraro. I printed it out on the puma letter head and will be mailing it today:
Dear Geraldine Ferraro,
My wife and I would like to offer our appreciation and thanks for all that you have done in your years of public service. You are an icon of encouragement to those who wish to stand up for what is right and what is wrong. Your actions enable our country to grow stronger.
We greatly appreciate your support of Senator Clinton and standing up for the voters of America. It appears the Democratic Party no longer values the basic principles, the basic core values of the American people. We truly appreciate your efforts to help correct a tragedy that is taking place in American history. This tragedy will blacken our history and set us back for decades to come.
My wife moved from Argentina to America in 2000 and we married in 2001. Through naturalization my wife became a United States citizen. She was proud to go to the voting booth and place her vote (as I) for Senator Clinton. She knows first hand the potential of such a tragedy that is taking place right here in America.
We wish to thank you again for your support of Senator Clinton and the voices of so many American voters.
Sincerely,
No snarking, sniping, exposed claws or ruffled fur today.
Today I challenge each PUMA to walk away from negativity and negative feelings. Let the slights and possible offenses go – chances are it was NOT intended that way. We are a family.
Walk away from it – channel the energy and emotion into a positive action. There is MUCH to be done and very little time to do it.
Get out in your communities and spread the word. Put up flyers. Give out business cards. Email your friends. Donate. Network. Send out Thank You notes to anyone who has been sympathetic or at least unbiased in their reviews or opinions of our group and activities.
Please close every post today with “Peace” as a reminder. :)
Peace.
OK PUMAS – YOU’RE GOING TO GET LONELY DOWN HERE.
It seems to me that the MSM has become extremely defensive about its lack of curiosity re the Edwards affair. The fact that these rumors were known WHILE he was running for President exposes deep flaws in their judgement.
Maybe, just maybe, this will create a silver lining for us. The stench of BO’s Chicago corruption, nefarious meddling in Kenyan politics, etc. could lure more journalists to the trail.
Hannity keeps saying that 2008 is the year that Mainstream Media died. My guess is that there will be some looking for redemption and resurrection, even if it means bringing down the Messiah.
Made my first round of phone calls. On my way out to mail the letter and take the grandkids school shopping. I will take the phone numbers and make more calls on my cell. Peace Be With You!
For some reason I keep having trouble logging on here. I’ve had to change my password several times because either my user name wasn’t registered or my password wasn’t correct.(use the same one almost everywhere),
Anyway, wrote to GAF today thanking her for standing almost alone against women continuing to be pushed aside for feeble men. I also wrote that I hoped in her and my lifetime that we could make this a non-issue.
I think that is overly optimistic given our ages but maybe some of you will live to see the day.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu, who faces a tough re-election, has had her name removed from a fundraiser announcement for presidential candidate Barack Obama.
Thanks Murphy for posting the financial information. I never doubted your integrity but it always helps to have this information made public. I have only been able to makee two small donations so far but I’m glad the money is being spent wisely.
May I make a suggestion…I know that we are all angry at what has happened to our party and to Senator Clinton. However, I think we should try and elevate our language a bit. Despite the fact that those that feel threatened by PUMA have resorted to name calling and using demeaning terms, we need not respond to them on their low level.
Ok, so I couldn’t think of what to say. I can’t write poetry no problem. But when it comes to business/professional, I am dumbfounded. So I used what was in my PROWL email, so here it is (Non-Inspirational):
Dear Ms. Ferraro,
I jsut want to say thank you for stating unequivocally on TV that double standards against women who compete has GOT TO STOP!! Never stop speaking out for Women’s rights & Equality!
Sincerely,
My name
As I was writing my thank you note to Ms. Ferraro, I remembered how brave she was in defending HRC during the primary. Of course, she was called a racist just like Bill Clinton and everyone else, but her courage came shining through. It is the same quality I love so much in Hillary. Now I am wondering, where are all the other women in politics, and why aren’t they making as much noise and screaming from the rooftops????????
Are they all cowards like Nancy?
On a lighter note….a representative from the DNC just stopped by looking for money. Lifesize Hillary with her Denver sign and puma pac seal were their to greet him.
hee,hee,hee – can I just say how hilarious it was ? He tried to argue with me, but quickly became frustrated.
We pumas have learned a lot the last few months. I think he was frustrated because my arguments included factual information and his were more emotional. In any case, lifesize Hillary , my children and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
