PATROLING BARNEGAT

by: Walt Whitman (1819-1892)

  •
ILD, wild the storm, and the sea high running,
Steady the roar of the gale, with incessant undertone muttering,
Shouts of demoniac laughter fitfully piercing and pealing,
Waves, air, midnight, their savagest trinity lashing,
Out in the shadows there milk-white combs careering,
On beachy slush and sand spirts of snow fierce slanting,
Where through the murk the easterly death-wind breasting,
Through cutting swirl and spray watchful and firm advancing,
(That in the distance! is that a wreck? is the red signal flaring?)

Slush and sand of the beach tireless till daylight wending,
Steadily, slowly, through hoarse roar never remitting,
Along the midnight edge by those milk-white combs careering,
A group of dim, weird forms, struggling, the night confronting,
      That savage trinity warily watching.

Our Group in Charlotte was Quite well organized with t-shirts and signs. When Dean arrived we began chanting “PUMA!” Apparently it got to him, as he had to stop his speech to address us. We stated that we wanted Hillary in nomination. All he would say is that “she will be in roll call, if she expresses that she wants to be”…pretty shady answer. So we respected the rest of his speech but you could easily tell we irked him! :)

Re Debra Bartoshevich:

The Democratic Party today has told all Democrats that dissent will not be permitted, that all Democrats must fall sheepishly in line behind the party leadership, that we will only be represented by them if we want what they want us to want and do what they want us to do.

The Democratic Party today has declared that they want to strip us of yet another right as citizens. No one is allowed to speak as a stalwart Democrat by opposing the party’s leadership. We have to shut up and fall in line.

At the beginning of June, when Murphy launched Puma PAC, I was among the very first to join.

I remember in the first days that there was intense debate among Pumas about whether or not voting for John McCain was a valid form of protest. I thought, “Of course, it is.”

There were others who said that they would vote for McCain because he is more moderate and more qualified than Barack Obama, and were challenged for taking that position because it would mean that they were not true Democrats. I thought, “Of course we’re true Democrats. Mindless sheep vote the party line. True Democrats expect - no demand - that their leaders uphold core democratic principles and represent them and their interests or step aside for leaders who will.”

What is the purpose of having a convention at which delegates select the party’s nominee if the outcome has been predetermined and any delegate who refuses to fall in line with the predetermined selection is denied access to the convention?

We no longer have a democratic Democratic Party.

Our choice is either to fight - revolution style - until every last one of those failed pseudo-leaders is out of power over the Democratic Party, or find leaders who will help us replace the undemocratic Democratic Party.

Despite evidence to the contrary (#10), I’m so angry that I can’t speak. I’m f&*king angry. (<-sorry)

No. This can’t be. The painfully stupid Fowler-Germond letter was one thing, but this. No.

We’re in a war, ladies and gentlemen. We vote Democrat election cycle after election cycle because it was the closest we could come to being represented in this joke of a representative democracy.

Make no mistake about it. We fight for our freedoms now, or lose everything forever.

No.

Does he really think he’s going to get away with creating chaos? The police learned lessons from 68 onward…

I will say that I liked two items on his demonstrtation agenda: Global Warming and No Borders.
I like the idea of people being allowed to live whereever they chose, that would be one way of yaying or naying governments.

MARYLANDPUMA -
Keep watching the Global list growing and had a thought!
Perhaps signs in the languages of the countries ( or maybe even flags) that represent our global members in Denver will send a message regarding OUR “foreign relations”. Plus I feel it is a token of respect and friendship to show them how much we appreciate all their support and efforts in our cause.

Someone also mentioned the other night that the names of all our members could be on signs, so those of us who can not attend will feel some small sense of being there. Perhaps you already saw it .

#25 Knoxville Puma on 07.25.08 at 8:51 pm

I’m sorry, but am I the only person who thinks that what happened today in the case of Debra Bartoshevich is infinitely significant?

It’s not about Bartoshevich being a martyr.

It’s about the rights of Democrats to oppose the party as a means of remaining loyal to its principles.

My anger has turned to confusion at what appears to be indifference to an infinitely significant inaction on the part of the Democratic Party leadership, who refused to act and turned the decision over to unprincipled Democratic Party of Wisconsin losers.

i guess the democratic party expects us to lie about what we will do in the voting booth. #37 Knoxville Puma on 07.25.08 at 8:57 pm

It’s not that she is a Clinton delegate or whatever. It’s that she said that she was going to exercise her right as a citizen, as a Democrat, to speak to her party by dissenting. And they stripped her, stripped us all, of the right to dissent, which is based on an important principle of democracy.

#74 Firebelle Puma on 07.25.08 at 9:20 pm

Knoxville,

Of course, we are angry about it, especially since many of us stood up for Debra Bartoshevich and tried to keep this from happening.

But we can’t let it divert us from our mission. It’s one more argument. It’s one more reason to fight. It’s one more weapon we can use against the DNC. But it’s not the end goal.

Remember, our first priority is to get Hillary nominated. If we fail in that mission, we must then focus on keeping Obama out of the White House.

Debra Bartoshevich is a foot soldier in that battle. She took a risk and, unfortunately, did not escape unscathed. But if she were here with us, she would tell us to carry on with our mission. Put your anger to good use, dear friend. For Hillary. For Debra. For all of us.

I have to disagree, Driving women backwards takes men along with them. Most people live in a two income household. When a wife gets pregnant, how many men can afford to take over all the bills? When some ones wife gets denied her promotion because of the old boys club, how does that effect the home life? How about the fact that men are made impotent in being able to deal with such things.
Thats just the tip of the iceberg.
Theres also the sisters mothers g/fs nieces, all of whom will be denied the opportunity to achieve because of sexism. Not to mention the degradation that will be considered acceptable. That will lead to violence from men. No body treats any women close to me (or any woman in public) with less than respect. Any man who does will deal with me ( and has) in our traditional method of settling disputes. A solid straight left followed by a good right hook. (I’m a southpaw).
No we are all affected. Some men (and women) just don’t see it.

As i understand it, each delegate has to sign a pledge to support the nominee until after the convention. Thats the rule. I may be wrong but i do believe I saw that when we were discussing the rules for the convention here.
If those are the rules she broke them. I admire her courage but, she knew the consequences.
She willingly gave up her delegate status to stand for what she believes in. I applaud her.

Arrogance Will Not Help Get Obama Elected

Excerpt: In the prayer he left at the Western Wall, Senator Obama asked the Lord to protect him from pride and despair. Maybe he should have added something about protecting his campaign from the related danger of arrogance. It might be the biggest threat to Obama’s success.

“They think they can’t lose,” one of the smartest people I know said to me this week, describing the attitude he sees on display in the Obama campaign. He isn’t the first one to say it.

There was a crop of stories, as the trip was ending, suggesting that the Obama campaign, which used to pride itself on its openess and transparency as compared to the Clinton machine, has now abandoned openess and transparency in favor of tight controls, attacks on reporters who write less-than flattering pieces, and a particularly unattractive form of hardball that people who think they are on the way to the White House, or already there, often adopt. It will not serve him well.

Aaah, it warms the cockles of my heart to again be fighting for Equal Rights!
____________________________________________
The cockles of my heart have been warmed, toasted, baked, broiled, steamed, poached, and burnt to a crisp fighting for equal rights all these decades.

This fight will have to be something radically different, although I’m not quite sure how. I do believe that men will have to suffer some serious consequences if they do not fight along side of us equally… and not because they see women as appendages via blood or marriage, but because they either know it;s the right thing and will raise the consciousnesses of their brothers (instead of preaching to the choir), or because they will suffer serious consequences. Speaks to a language, that for some, is their first (and sometimes, only) language.

We should discuss after Denver.., or on Nov 5.

Got my computer fixed and had no intentions of blogging tonight - but
KNOXVILLE PUMA - and I just started reading from the bottom up so do not know how many people have agreed or disagreed with you about the Wisconsin delegate - but I see you have passionately tried your best to get people stirred up and
#74Firebelle Puma - I understand completely what you are saying as well about picking our battles - but guess what folks - this is a big battle - and in my opinion - bigger than the likes of a Donna - that everyone is so passionate about -
Many of us - and I was one included - sent emails to the Chairman of the Democratic Party in Wisconsin saying not to do it - we were all ignored and it happened -
I personally am in touch with another superdelegate on a daily basis - that has to remained nameless but was in a meeting with others that was trying to press her to admit that she was for Hillary rather than No name and felt very uncomfortable - IF WE LET this happen to just one delegate the word will get out that anyone else that votes for someone other than Precious will be attacked and stripped of their status - isn’t this kinda of what we are trying to do - get her nominated - I personally think we all should send another blast of emails to the good Chairman saying how displeased we are of his actions - if for nothing else but send a sign to others NOT TO MESS WITH OUR OTHER DELEGATES - this is just one and a sign that there could be others.

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION- and now I am off for the night - have a good evening everyone.

Well… there are those that will vote for McCain, some are voting for 3rd party, some are sitting out, some are going to write-in hillary and some will fall in line.

But, depending on how the rest of the election goes… it’s quite possible that there will be McCain Dems in history.

wrt Edwards… gosh, I hope that isn’t true for his wife’s sake. If true… shame on JE.

I think the new articles at NoQuarterUSA deserve time on network news.

As far as voting in November goes, I pray each day that Hillary will be the obvious choice.

If not, I will campaign TIRELESSLY for the candidate most likely to win because that man is so scary that NO ONE COULD BE WORSE. NO ONE.

Also, it is very very important to send a message to the DNC should they keep Hillary out that this is what you get when you mess with true Democrats.

I am a jewish woman, and I will leave this country in a heartbeat should that man win. Principle and fear will drive me out. But if I am forced out I will leave with my integrity, something many will never get back.

I do not understand how Howie, Dean and Nancy sleep at night. Donna must have lost both her mind and conscience long ago, and ANY woman who is still supporting that man is an embarassment to herself. At some point in our collective lives we must simply say NO MORE. I would hope that we have reached that point.

#132 murphy on 07.25.08 at 9:53 pm

From Amarissa’s link to the LA Times:

“. . .That’s in addition to the $1.6 million The Times identified earlier this week in donations from Clinton donors to Obama in June.

However, it wasn’t a two-way street last month. Obama’s donors gave Clinton a mere $105,000 in June, despite a plea from Obama that his high-roller donors help retire her $22 million in campaign debts.

In June, Clinton donors gave $1.53 million to the Obama Victory Fund, established by Obama and the Democratic Party to raise money far in excess of the $2,300 that individuals can give to a presidential candidate. By law, the fund can receive high five-figure checks and divvy them up among various other Obama-related committees.”

ugh.

Apologies if this was posted earlier.

Quote FROM Debra Bartoshevich…
“The Wisconsin Democratic Party is holding a conference call THIS FRIDAY, July 25, to make a decision about whether to allow me to retain my status as a Hillary Clinton delegate to the Democratic National Convention in August in Denver.”

BACKGROUND: The Wisconsin DNC is telling Debra she will lose her delegate status. She is fighting so she can vote for Hillary @ the convention. Please help Debra by immediately contacting the Democratic Party Chair and ask them to stop rigging this process by punishing someone simply for supporting Hillary Clinton:

Joe Wineke, DP Chair
The Democratic Party of Wisconsin
222 W. Washington Ave. Suite 150
Madison, Wisconsin 53703

CALL: (608) 255-5172
FAX: (608) 255-8919
EMAIL: party@wisdems.org

thank you.

I do not believe this post received any comments but that doesn’t mean there was no action. I do hope many faxes and emails were sent along with mine.
Clearly this did not stop the despicable action taken but it would let them know we are aware of their atrocious actions. I doubt we will find any mention in the media.

This is more than the loss of a delegate. We are losing our democracy, it is hanging in the balance. This is why Denver is so important.

Certainly racism and sexism and all the “isms” are horrible and damaging. However, in my view, there is nothing more horrifying or damaging than the loss of our democracy.

I am angry and frightened but anxious to try to make things happen will all the other Pumas.

VIRAL EMAILS against BO

A friend of mine in the east coast backed Hillary during the primaries but when HC “pulled out” she moved to BO. I told her about JSND/PUMA and sent her the link to pumapac. She’s open-minded and I thought I was swaying her away from BO… But then one day she received a forwarded chain-email (viral email) with the subject: “20 Reasons Why We Must Keep McCain from Winning” (something along those lines). She forwarded it to me and wrote, “Did you know all this?! I just can’t let the Republicans win. It might be sad what happened to Hillary… and BO may not be the ideal… but McCain is worse, SO I’M VOTING FOR BO!”

Well… I’m still working on her. But the main point here is that this got me thinking about the effectiveness of these “viral/chain emails”… and (I suggested this before, but more meekly) … WHY NOT CREATE OUR OWN VIRAL EMAIL(s)… something like, “20 Reasons Why We Should Turn Down Obama.”

At the bottom, these viral-emails usually say, “Please forward this to at least 5 people”… or, “Please forward this to as many people as possible” …. or “…to all the registered voters you know.” This is how they spread all over the cyberworld!!!

The template for the viral email can be nicely formatted and would be found at a PUMApac page (the Action Center?) available for us to download or copy and paste into a blank email so we can send it to other people and have them forward it to others.

The viral-email template at PUMApac could be periodically updated to reflect any new relevant information that comes out about BO, etc. Also, when we copy and paste it into our blank email, we can change or modify anything to make it sound better for the person we are sending it to.

I know some organizations (I think even MoveOn.org) have used the viral-email idea to “campaign” and spread info throughout the internet. Why don’t we also do something like that?

——————
PS. If you didn’t see my other longer post earlier today, here’s the link to it:

Re #10 Knoxville Puma

Did anyone watch the HBO presentation of John Adams? This reminds me of the scene where the Continental Congress received a letter from King George in response to their many requests to the crown for changes. Before that letter many of the representatives wanted to remain loyal to England and work things out (sort of like “working from within”). That letter condemned the Congress as traitors and told the representatives that their actions would not be tolerated. That letter united the 13 Colonies and was the catalyst for writing the Declaration on Independence. It was the political turning point in our revolution at least in the movie.

We will no matter what happens at the Convention, we will be the real catalyst for change not Obama or any of his cronies. Rejoice the battles lines are closing and soon we will begin to make history.

A little dramatic? Yeah but I look forward to this fight because I believe we are right. It is a privilege to be a Puma and I am happy you guys are in this with me. Oh did anyone bring some spare musket balls?

It wasn’t Clinton –- a possible clue that the Senator from New York has been bumped from Obama’s list of potential VPs. If you needed a clue.

Instead, according to the Falls Church News-Press, McAuliffe pointed to Virginia Governor Tim Kaine. “McAuliffe was adamant in his recommendation of Kaine as the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee,” the News-Press reported.”

FUNNY NEWS FLASH:

A close friend of mine is a die-hard Red Sox fan and a peripheral PUMA (in spirit, but not active). She is at the Sox-Yankees game at Fenway tonight. For those of you who are not baseball fans, it is the ultimate rivalry–going back decades. Lots of media coverage at these games. Sort of like another rivalry we are familiar with…

Anyway, she texted me from the game tonight: “Puma reference on a sign at Sox-Yanks game!”

I haven’t been able to get back to her to find out exactly what one of our own wrote on the sign, but WE ARE EVERYWHERE!!!!

YAHOO PUMAS!

#183 DancesWithPumas on 07.25.08 at 10:16 pm

I just found out that Cindy Sheehan lives in the Mission District of SFO. Cool!

#184 goandersen on 07.25.08 at 10:17 pm

she is not far from me then.

If they’re going all the way to PR for the pizza money, you’re gonna have to spring for #92 also!

#158 Murphy - apparently all our growl got from the Wisconsin Democratic party was a third finger - now I think we need to give them a full Hand or PAW whichever is the case - we need to let people know that we are not on a search and destroy mission - that we will hit once and that is it if you survive our hit - they need to know that there will be more coming where that came from if they continue their actions - and it is no longer about the Wisconsin delegate its about all the other delegates and superdelegates that are watching this action and BELIEVE me they ARE watching.

I lied I said I was signing off - but lurked - now back to my projects for Puma.

#188 murphy on 07.25.08 at 10:20 pm

mp — will you email me the two-faces flyers again?

the blue and the white backgrounds?

thanx!

You think he is doing this with Hillary’s approval? I sure hope so, I couldn’t take another traitor! I love (ed?) Terry! I had a chance to meet him here in PR the night of Hillary’s victory and had my picture taken with him. It was a grand evening! If he is cheating on her it would really hurt!

#190 DancesWithPumas on 07.25.08 at 10:22 pm

184 goandersen

The thing about the Mission District, pre-Silicon Valley, is that it was a low rent ghetto of sorts (working poor and working class latinos and lesbians), but the best kept secret was that it had the best weather in all of SFO!

#191 sandipuma on 07.25.08 at 10:22 pm

Ok brb need to get up from this chair and walk around. I get stiff. Hmmm sign of old age.

#192 DancesWithPumas on 07.25.08 at 10:24 pm

189 Amarissa,

Yes, I do think she approved of his announcement. Would you want to be Obama’s VP? Notice how many have said they weren’t interested? 5 or 6 at least.

There are parts of it that are really ghetto, but some areas that are not.
Oh hell, the whole world is becoming a ghetto!

#28 maxgrader on 07.25.08 at 8:53 pm Have you heard? I’m surprised that pumas are not talking about it. Not one mention of John Edwards on this thread. Can FOX be trusted on this one?

*******************************

The thing is maxgrader that if it is true and most of believe where there is smoke there is fire, and thus we are in empathy for Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards.

And it is still gossip right now, right?

#201 DancesWithPumas on 07.25.08 at 10:30 pm

we’re more like bell peppers…but, ok.

Murphy, which web hoseting company would that be?
I did a little research from work today, and decided to get a blog (not public) so that I could learn the mechanics of it. (i’m a Gemini, we need to know everything, just for the sake of knowing).

pookie, well that too.

dwp — dreamhost. let me know if you find a better one. I like their prices and support — very easy and friendly — laid back California company.

But with 1 million site visits a month, Puma PAC can’t afford to be down for even an hour.

#209 Pookie on 07.25.08 at 10:34 pm

I think I know why no one wants to be Bo’s VP, they know, HE, is not smart enough to be President, and they know, THEY, are not smart enough to take up the slack.Bo does not want Hillary because he know’s she is smarter then all of them put together!

#211 cosmeta on 07.25.08 at 10:35 pm

People, people, people…. Missed the earlier post, but from what I am gathering, Debra Bartoshevich lost her standing as a delegate.

That’s because the Party Rules say that as a delegate one must enter the Convention in “good faith” and that means, obeying party rules. So if a person says they are going republican… that is NOT good faith.

Kind of like bishops gathering to vote for the next pope, and one of them says, I am going to vote for rabbi Ishmael.

It ain’t a gonna fly!

Voting in November under the General Election is quite another thing because that falls under the Constitution of the United States.

But-

Party Rules are just that, Party rules… as in an organization setting up its own bylaws. The DNC has nothing to do with our voter rights because its not in our Constitution.

- Primaries are not in our Constitution.
- Conventions are not in our Constitution.

#212 murphy on 07.25.08 at 10:35 pm

antifish #207 — i voted. VERY interesting. My own wonderful state is not falling in line. Go massachusetts!

If a Democrat for Prez can’t win in Massachusetts then where the heck CAN he win??

#214 queen81 on 07.25.08 at 10:37 pm

Murphy-

dean had to stop his speech because we were chanting “PUMA” too loud! we asked about Hillary being placed in nomination and all he would say was that she would be on roll call “if she chooses to be”. needless to say we were unpleased with that. We were very pleased to have many passer bys honking for Hillary. I think we threw him a little off kilter. They actually called in 3 more squad cars. of course we were a peaceful bunch and there were no issues. the Charlotte Observer as well as WCNC news was there and did interviews. I tried to get on camera and in print but they seemed only interested in promoting the stereotype of the “angry, old women” and declined to hear from the 27 year old…go figure!

#218 jbjd on 07.25.08 at 10:42 pm

People all over the world will be watching what happens in Denver. Thousands of reporters will be there to cover these events. And hundreds of them will seek out PUMAs for interviews. They will ask why we object to BO’s nomination. Study the issues and be prepared to offer lucid and concise analyses of things like delegate selection and role; caucuses versus primaries; and procedures for nomination and balloting at the convention. Above all, please, remember this. Even if push comes to shove and law enforcement arrest protesters en masse, absolutely nothing else we do will focus the attention of the world on our cause as much as the sight of thousands of middle-aged women willing to risk incarceration to stand up for what they believe is right. And never forget the world is watching.

I am so sad my son and I are unable to be there.

#219 antifish on 07.25.08 at 10:43 pm

Now, as I was attempting to post.

Dances and goandersen, keep those skilz under wraps. When we get to Denver, we’ll find out where Dean, Pelosi and Brazile are sleeping and let you have at their beds!

WE GOT SKILZ!

#222 murphy on 07.25.08 at 10:44 pm

OMG. i KNOW i’m not supposed to visit anti-puma sites, I know it — but I was noticing on our stats page that yestodemocracy linked to us today. Bright bulb Christina is mocking me for not knowing that Leibniz’ Law is a scientific principle (of course it’s a philosophical theory, not a scientific principle, but to explain the difference to such an intellectually challenged. . . oh never mind). Anyway she thinks I’m ridiculous for thinking that Axelrod should be arrested for breaking Leibniz’ Law.

oh god.

oh lord.

oh boy.

zero comments over there so I guess we should let it die on the vine, but, oh boy.

I was talking about that at Bitter Politics and the last thread here.

My roommate and I were watching the game (two diehard sox fans here… actually all my roommates are)… and we caught that on tv.

There was a sign that said “Welcome back Big Papi” with the word PUMA in the corner of the sign.

It was cool to see that.

Murphy,

I read that earlier. They stated it out of context, so the joke, from my pov, was on them.

How many times do we have to tell you not to go there?
You’re grounded… puma sites only or no allowance.

I noticed zero comments too. Ha. Karmic returns!

I just got this email from a friend of mine from Chicago, that is very close to the Hillary campaign. See for yourself from the mouth of one of our soldiers.

From: xxxxxxx
Date: 07/25/08 10:18:02
To: xxxxxxx
Subject: This came via a fellow SEAL, just kind of makes me sick to see the truth that the news won’t report. Our men and women in the service deserve better than this.

A friend passed this along… a message from Captain Jeffrey Porter,
currently serving in Afghanistan, to his family and friends back home:

Hello everyone,
As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass
along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour
on his visit to ‘The War Zone’. I wanted to share with you what
happened.

He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof
vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who
is the commander here at Bagram.

As the Soldiers were lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and
didn’t say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the
General. As he finished
