DENVER UPDATE, July 3, 2008 at 10:30pm: ORGANIZE UPDATE! Wow, Pumas — the response is overwhelming. We will be spending the weekend hammering out details and updating everyone. Remember, the most important thing is that you come to Denver. We’ll be there — with signs and banners and cameras. Don’t be anxious or insecure. It’s a big city — they can handle a few extras. Start making your plans to be there — especially on the 27th and 28th.

DENVER UPDATE, July 3, 2008 at 12:35pm: TRAVEL UPDATE! Puma PAC will be providing buses from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Jacksonville, and Washington DC to bring Pumas from all across the country to Denver, starting on August 24th. Please help pay for these buses. Many Pumas will find it difficult to pay for getting the time off, motels, food etc. Let’s help as many Puma PAC members as we can join us in Denver. This is a special BUSES TO DENVER FUND. All donations made here will go EXCLUSIVELY to paying for buses. If we can raise enough to hire 100 buses, then hell yes we’ll do it. If 20,000 members each throw in $10 bucks for a free ride to Denver for a fellow Puma we’ll have enough for 500 buses. Grab your fanny packs and get your days off from work Pumas. We’ll have a mighty convoy to Denver rolling on August 24th!

Correct me if Im wrong…

Wasnt there something just recently about the DNC already having financial problems with the Convention? Now Obama wants to rent another building. Its not like they can give up the building they already have. The building they already have will be used the rest of the time that day and other days.
Then there is the problem of moving all those delegates back and forth; who is going to pay for that—Opps dont forget the gas prices.
For some reason I think Obama is getting a bit full of himself…
Doesnt Obama realize that his vote still stands on the super delegates. Already some in the party are getting a bit miffed with him. Hey we do have almost 6 weeks to go….

Hi all I havn’t been on in two days and I would love to go to Denver but since I can’t I will donate in case others can that don’t have the money my sister got a reply from Ms speaker said she wasn’t in her district so she couldn’t replyabout the subject so my sister is going to call her office she is also trying to get on the site here but is blocked by wordpress my gmail has been deleted strange things I never have problems with my pc but now things keep happening out of the norm I will be in Alaskaif I could get a refund I would go to Denver.

Hello All! This is my first post here. I will donate my $20.08 tomorrow. I am a regular on TaylorMarsh and I was a regular on hillaryclinton.com. Sometimes I tangle wits with some Obama supporters on cnn.com. Here was my last blog on TM tonite. Sleep well all! I look forward to great discourse in the coming weeks!

Taylor, God love you, I just cannot agree with you. I know after the primary, you shook off the loss and put your head down and charged forward for the Democratic party. If the leadership wasn’t so dense, you should have a position within the DNC. That said, I simply cannot agree with your assessment.

Firstly, you said that both candidates basically looked at going forward in Iraq the same way. They don’t. Senator Obama has been campaigning on ending the war NOW. TODAY. He has been saying that since before the beginning of the campaign.
He went on to say, after characterizing the war as the Bush-Clinton war, that he was the only person with a plan to get us out. He said this in his stump speeches, at rally’s and at fundraisers. Have you seen that plan? His plan says that he will have the United Nations convene a constitutional comittee on Iraq’s constitution where nobody would be allowed to leave the meeting until the reconcilliation is complete. Really? He is SO persuasive that everybody will sit there and work out all their differences at once? I’m not convinced.

Second, his plans states that he will be a tough negotiator ‘…with Syria and Iran sending a clear message that they need to stop meddling in Iraq’s affairs…’ I trust he saw Iran’s leader being welcomed with open arms in Iraq. And what does he know about the Syrians? For that matter, what does he know about the Turks? What is he offering in terms of a stick, or does he plan to threaten Syria and Iran with force to ’send a clear message?’ These questions went unanswered during the primary amidst his absolutely positive stance on what he is able to do.

Finally, Senator Obama campaigned on the fact that his judgement is better than all the other candidates in the race, Dem or Repub. He campaigned that you want someone that would get it right from the start. Why then has his campaign then adopted the stance that his chief rival had to which he disparaged her for (with the great help of the mainstream media)?

Futhermore Taylor, with his very visible propensity to change positions when caught by his words, his inexperience or political expediency based on the audience he is talking to, I don’t know what he will do. Remember that he is getting a lot of money from a lot of big donors. I’m quite sure that he will be beholden to them. Will they ask to stay in Iraq longer? Will they ask to have a few more subcontracts for their companies? Who knows?

The only thing that is for sure is that Senator Obama panders, and it is evident that he does that for his own personal benefit. So I don’t know what his positions are. I know what he said, but he has no political background I can refer to to say he is a man of conviction. This is the scariest thing about him to date. I have no idea what he does or does not stand for. Again I say, I am waiting to hear what he has to say when he comes back from Iraq. He was steadfast about that 16 months saying he was right and everybody else was wrong. If that timeframe changes, will he admit that HE was initially wrong? Doubt it.

Scary, very scary……

DENVER (AP) – Barack Obama’s campaign is considering having him accept the Democratic presidential nomination at Invesco Field at Mile High instead of the Pepsi Center, the chosen site for the Democratic National Convention, two people with knowledge of convention planning said Thursday.

The two spoke on condition of anonymity because nothing has been confirmed.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Shannon Gilson said no decisions have been made.

Representatives for the convention host committee and Mayor John Hickenlooper declined to comment or said they did not know about the proposal. Colorado Democratic Party Chairwoman Pat Waak did not return a telephone message seeking comment.

Democratic National Convention Committee spokeswoman Natalie Wyeth said, “There’s nothing to announce.”

The convention will be held Aug. 25-28 at the Pepsi Center, with Obama scheduled to accept the Democratic presidential nomination on the final night, which also is the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington in 1963.

Obama would be the first black nominee of a major political party.

The Pepsi Center’s Web site says it can hold 21,000 people for special events. Invesco Field at Mile High, where the Denver Broncos play, seats more than 76,000.

Still don’t have official word here about specific goals for Denver, but I advocate we should not give up on Hillary.

Anyway my wish list for the future:
1. reform of the democratic primaries. One person=one vote. No superdelegates, no caucuses (without popular votes), no weighted delegations -winner take all primaries. (small states could be grouped and hold their primaries first, larger ones could follow – one possible scenerio). Of course it this had been the case this year, Hillary Clinton would be the nominee and much of the angst of Democratic primary would have been over long ago.
2. A continuing careful examination of all information concerning one Barack Obama; in line with confirming what many of the posters already suspect or concluded-that Barack Obama is unfit to be President of the U.S.
3. Resolution of the democratic nomination by selection of the most qualified candidate by the upcoming convention. This would require a little bit of forethought if one Barack Obama hasn’t fallen on his bonehead beforehand, but again I don’t see any other person than H. Clinton more qualified on the national stage.
4. In the event that Hillary is not select at the convention, than our support will include those whom we think is better capable of correcting the course this country has taken, be it John McCain, Ralph Nader or any of the others with judgment better than Barack Obama’s.
Just a note, I’m planning to vote for McCain in the absence of Hillary, but I sympathize with those who do otherwise. The future will sort the seers from the ramble.
Another note, Hillary shouldn’t accept the VP position in the unlikely event of Obama offering it to her. My feeling is Obama will drag many of his democratic associates through the dirt in his quest for glory and I don’t feel she would want to be part of it.

I think it is strange that Donna B. is trying to undermine Murphy just because she gave $ to McCain in 2000. I once voted for little Ross P., even joined his defeated group once, but that doesn’t make me less of a Democrat. We all adore Hillary and will do with our vote what we feel is best for us. FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Democrat Barack Obama opened the door Thursday to refining his plan to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq in 16 months based on what he hears from military commanders during his upcoming trip there.

“I am going to do a thorough assessment when I’m there,” he told reporters on the airport tarmac here. “I’m sure I’ll have more information and continue to refine my policy.”

During his presidential campaign, Obama has gone from the hard-edged, vocal opposition to Iraq that defined his early candidacy to more nuanced rhetoric that calls for a phased-out drawdown of all combat brigades that, at a rate of one or two a month, could last 16 months. He has said that if al-Qaida builds bases in Iraq, he would keep troops either in the country or the region to carry out “targeted strikes.”

Republicans, who have been goading Obama to return to Iraq to see conditions for himself, pounced.

“There appears to be no issue that Barack Obama is not willing to reverse himself on for the sake of political expedience,” said Alex Conant, a spokesman for the national Republican Party. “Obama’s Iraq problem undermines the central premise of his candidacy and shows him to be a typical politician.”

Obama’s GOP rival, John McCain, has been a vocal supporter of the Iraq war and war policy has been a central disagreement between the two candidates.

But Obama insisted that his position has not changed at all.

He said he is saying now what he always has: The war was a mistake and needs to be brought to “a responsible end,” but “we need to be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in.” This means, he said, that his 16-month timeline “was always premised on” not endangering either U.S. troops or Iraq’s stability, which he had previously been told by commanders was possible.

“I’m going to continue to gather information to see whether those conditions still hold,” he said. “My goal is to end this conflict as soon as possible.”

Obama’s Web site contains this direct promise about Iraq: “Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. Obama will make it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq. He will keep some troops in Iraq to protect our embassy and diplomats; if al-Qaida attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes on al-Qaida.”

Although he did not specifically mention his 16-month timeline on Thursday, Obama called it “pure speculation” to suggest he has been softening or even backing off his position as violence lessens in Iraq.

“I continue to believe that it is a strategic error for us to maintain a long-term occupation in Iraq at a time when conditions in Afghanistan are worsening, al-Qaida is continuing to establish bases in areas of northwest Pakistan, resources there are severely strained and we are spending $10 to $12 billion a month in Iraq that we desperately need here at home, not to mention the strains on our military,” Obama said.

Obama plans a visit this summer to Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The Illinois senator also has said he intends to visit Iraq and Afghanistan this summer as part of an official congressional trip that would be separate from the campaign-funded Mideast and European tour. It would be his second trip to Iraq.

Obama senior foreign policy adviser Susan Rice told reporters on a conference call that Obama would keep to his commitment to begin removing U.S. forces from Iraq “from the early days of his administration.” She said the 16-month timeline was based on “the best military advice that he has received” and that it appears to continue to be “still broadly applicable.”

“Obviously if there are fewer brigades or more brigades” there by the time a new administration takes office next year, she said, “that would adjust the timeline.”

Obama’s position has been that troops should only remain in Iraq to protect the U.S. embassy, engage in humanitarian efforts, and conduct counterterrorism operations. She said Obama would consider having the U.S. continue to train Iraqi police forces if they show some progress, “but he’s not interested in training one sector of Iraqi society to kill another.”

McCain was an early supporter of increasing the number of U.S. troops in Iraq as President Bush did last year. He wants to pursue the current counterinsurgency tactics to give Iraqis time to work out a political reconciliation. He has said he’s willing to see some U.S. troops stay there as much as 100 years but not if they are being wounded or killed in combat. Rather he supports keeping a military presence in that part of the world because of its volatility.

I think Hillary is best as president, but much better than just a senator. VP or in his cabinet would be a move up, God knows women sometimes have to go the slower road to move up, and it would make it easier for her to rerun in four years and run again as president. I want the convention to nominate her in August, but if that doesn’t happen, I just hate the thought of her only having to be a junior senator.

To All PUMAs: Bo’s gonna be in Montana (Butte, I think). He’s trying to get all those ranchers to vote for him although he is having a picnic with a bunch of college folks after the parade. The news article said that he wasn’t going to be in the parade because of security (which is probably smart), but he would watch it with his family. I hope he has a good time (seriously) especially since he’s making some really good gaffs. He needs a day off.

I love the train over Donner’s Pass and through the desert. Then its over the Rocky Mtn. There’s a valley just north of Glenwood Springs where they train goes right along the side of cliffs. One can see all kinds a bald eagles everywhere. The trip just gets more beautiful by the mile. Wish I could go, but I may be back to work by then. Please do go and join your PUMA friends. I’m going over to Colorado in a week, mostly rural area. Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins are all professional populationa and heavily college age towns. The rural areas and smaller towns are heavily Republican. Although in the last five years, Colorado put in a Democratic Senator and a Democratic Governor. With the convention being in Denver, I imagine that’s going to help bring in some more independents. So, Colorado may go blue this year.

Regarding your idea on vests in lieu of handheld signs, I replied at the end of yesterday’s thread…I’ve had vinyl sashes printed up before, and it’s not that expensive a project….they’re super easy to wear, and fun.

NY depends on state you live in. some will count for hillary, some for person on party ticket, some not count at all. have to check with your secretary of state. they handle the elections.

#420 Zee- There will always be diehard Obama followers that won’t change their vote no matter what he does because they are too stubborn to ever admit they are wrong. We need to focus on the voters that want to know the facts and want to vote for someone who will be good for the country. I am sure there are a lot of voters that are still undecided or that are only voting for Obama because they don’t think they have any other choices. We need to convince them that there is still a chance for Hillary until after the convention and then we will need to convince them that they have other choices if that doesn’t happen.

Fred has been doing a lot of work and from what I have read is donating the cost of getting some banners or signs printed. It would probaly be best to get with her to get something like this done so that we can spend the money availabale wisely.

I suspect it’s because each format has its advantages and disadvantages.

There are some formats which allow us to automatically include a link to a home page or web page…that also is useful for getting to know who’s posting. In a convenient and voluntary fashion.

And some formats which have entire forums (pages? not sure of the terminology) dedicated to welcoming and orienting newcomers, etc. I guess the ones I’m thinking of have been used on writing sites, where there are separate places for workshopping, critique, politics, social, etc.

My main point is that we should have a choice. There are a LOT of people who do not have the time to socialize when it takes quite a long time to simply catch up on the actions and organizing we have to do.

Another thing is that people get bent out of shape when either the expected socializing doesn’t take place or is taking place exclusively with a clique. Leading to endless back and forths others have to pick their way through.

It’s actually antisocial…and I saw one person say how are we going to grow if we don’t all greet each other?

I couldn’t even tell if the person was joking or not, because it HAD to be a joke.

We sent 12,000 emails. If we had 12,000 people in here all getting bent out of shape because so and so didn’t greet them, then 6,000 of those threatening to storm off, then the other 6,000 begging them to stay…where would it end? With 12,000 new lurkers for the online soap opera adding their 24,000 cents?

Even if we had the threads where we could respond directly to each comment…people could hug and whine and digress to their hearts content and those of us who want to skip the melodrama could do so all in one swoop and carry on actual conversations on the relevant topics we come here for.

I know it’s only been one month, but the format testing the other day gave me such hope!!!

I had a sudden brainstorm about 3rd party spokespeople. PUMA is getting its name known and recognized. Now PUMA needs to do some outreach to Joseph Wilson (& Valerie Plame) so that the Wilson’s can finish what they started, campaigning for Hillary.

It would be a good thing indeed if by our outreach we can get the Wilson’s to issue a statement on why they still think Hillary is the best candidate.

texassherry….Mrs. Fred and I share the same outlook on action, but I am not at all comfortable with her impatience when it comes to product. The sashes are made out of vinyl police tape…what’s printed on those much be short and eye-catching. It calls for brainstorming.

It’s ok to be quick with the fliers….that was a great, instant idea. We could have designs or bulletin points each of us can print out on our own machines, and then hand out, or post in libraries or grocery stores, or coffee shops….most of which have community bulletin boards.

But the back and forth discussions are still necessary.

Other PUMAS have correctly pointed out it’s ILLEGAL to stuff mailboxes. I’ve done this work before for many companies and also for political candidates. Each town has its own ordinance. In some places you are not even allowed to put things in or on the DOOR, either!

If you live near a city or have a grocery store that lets you reserve a time for passing out literature, you can set up a table. It doesn’t have to be a “table” per se. An ironing board is perfect as it collapses to be carried and can be covered with a homemade banner made out of an old sheet.

But I thank you for your interest in this….I will say it’s something that is better done in pairs or teams. And yes…very necessary to reach those voters who are not online to let them know they’re not alone and it’s not over!!

#431 I have also heard that in some states if you write in a Democrat other than the nominee they give the vote to the nominee. We really need to check into that on a state by state basis. Since I live in Seattle and we vote by mail I plan to have an election night party. If McCain is clearly winning (and the networks will call the election before our polls even close) then I will write in Hillary (only if WA state won’t give the vote to BO) then drive to the post office. I will look into what WA state does. But we should make a PUMA list so everyone will be sure not to accidentally give BO a vote.

This has rendered the Democratic Party unrecognizable to ordinary citizens. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world.

Objections

The members of the Democratic National Committee’s Rules and By-Laws Committee violated The DNC charter on May 31, 2008 by meeting in private, in direct violation of the Sunshine Rules Provision of said Charter.

On that same day, the Democratic Party grossly violated ethical standards when it awarded four delegates to candidate Barack Obama based on actual votes for candidate Hillary Clinton, and in addition, awarded him delegates based on votes for “Uncommitted.”

Earlier in the campaign season, the Democratic Party violated its own Delegate Selection Rules by applying penalties to only two states who broke Section 11 calendar rules, even though five states broke those rules. In addition, Florida and Michigan were originally stripped of 100% of their delegates, even though the rules stipulated a 50% penalty.

The decisions of the RBC meeting mentioned above are evidence of sexism and authoritarianism within the ranks of the Democratic Party.

Caucuses are a violation of the one-person, one-vote and secret ballot principles that have been cornerstone Democratic values for more than a century. They produced a skewed and unfair result this primary season. Caucus states are also over-represented in the pledged delegate count, in violation of the one-person, one-vote principle.

Sexism was allowed to flourish as never before not only because of the behavior of the mainstream media, but also by the actions of many in the progressive online community, the stark silence of the Democratic Leadership and because ordinary Americans, male and female, engaged in it as long as it advanced their favored candidate.

Barack Obama and his campaign exploited racial issues in the primary campaign, which risks setting back the Civil Rights movement, and cynical Democratic leaders, as well as some ordinary Democrats, approved of this campaign tactic.

The voices of 18 million voters who supported Hillary Clinton have been illegitimately silenced, ridiculed, and subjected to outright fabrications on the part of the mainstream press and the Internet press.

The evidence is present, for anyone who wants to see it, that authoritarian tendencies fueled by greed are on the rise in the Democratic Party.

Now, in view of the dismissal of one-half the Democratic voters of this primary season, their social degradation, in view of the unjust actions above mentioned, and in view of the disenfranchisement of the voters in two states, and because we do feel ourselves aggrieved, oppressed, and fraudulently deprived of a free and fair primary election, we insist that the Democratic Party address our objections, or risk the loss of our votes come November.

In entering upon the work before us, we anticipate no small amount of misconception, misrepresentation, and ridicule; but we will use every instrumental within our power to affect our objectives. We will employ agents, circulate tracts and flyers, blog, advertise in all media, petition state and national Democratic leadership, and endeavor to enlist the press in our behalf.

Resolutions

Resolved, that the Democratic Party must seat the full Michigan and Florida delegation in adherence to the thoroughly Democratic principle of one-person, one-vote.

Resolved, that Michigan delegates must be awarded according to the actual votes cast, specifically that Hillary Clinton must be given 73 delegates and Barack Obama must be given 0 (zero).

Resolved, that Hillary Clinton’s name must be offered on the first roll call at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August of 2008, in accordance with tradition for 16 of the last 18 Democratic National Conventions.

Resolved, that caucuses should be abolished, and the Democratic Primary system in its entirety must be reformed to better reflect the one-person, one-vote principle, as well as the equal representation principle enshrined in the Constitution.

Resolved, that millions of women and men alike no longer think of the Democratic Party as the party for women’s issues, or for equality and fairness, or for the protection of abortion rights, and will no longer vote for them based on such criteria.

Resolved, that the cynical exploitation of cultural issues will not be rewarded with votes, and that it is part of the PUMA mission to educate the electorate about such abuses.

Resolved, that the PUMA movement is comprised of traditional and loyal Democrats who have carefully watched and recorded the events of the 2008 Primary campaign season.

Resolved, that 18 million Americans voted for Hillary Clinton, more than any other presidential primary candidate in history, and they have a right to help shape the agenda and processes of the Democratic Party.

Your introduction is misleading, there was no discussion at the Unity meeting. The meeting consisted of two speeches. There was not an opportunity to ask questions. Discussion involves more than one person conversing about a topic. In a speech one person talks everyone else listens.

Yes, America does need a change. However, it is important to note that change by itself is not always a good thing. Senator Obama proposes change he, his wife and his followers can believe in. I have yet to see the details of this change. Now, before you reply there are details available for those who wish to find them, let me say I’d like to see consistency in his approach to change. Each day, Obama changes his mind as the wind changes direction. It is not only confusing to keep track of these changes, but it is also ridiculous that one person’s platform can be so wishy washy that it changes according to the audience’s response.

Change is needed, unfortunately Senator Obama does not have the desire, knowledge or character to make these changes. And I fear for America if he does manage to swindle and buy his way into the White House.

HappY 4th , PUMAS !!!! I have been doing a lot of lurking lately , and I love how this site has grown !. I still see names from day one and that is even more exciting :) They sooooo wanted us to fade away – too bad .
Anyway , those of you who have been on here for awhile know that I refuse to support any candidate other than Sen. Clinton until after the convention . I continue to believe that she is the rightful nominee , and until an OFFICIAL nominee is seated at the convention – she , having won the majority of the votes , is (imo) the presumptive nominee …. but , I digress.. I have an honest question to throw out – Has anyone really taken an honest look at Nader’s platform ? I have not . I went to the site this morning , and didn’t have time to figure out how to navigate it … I had heard that his positions were similar to Clinton’s on many issues , but of course I have to see that for myself – if I listened to what people tell me I would be a bot :) ! Anyway , I can’t just stay home in November , but I would like to have a clear conscience when I vote , so I was looking for a little insight from people whose judgment I trust . Thanks , Cooper

#557 TexasTigress…I heard on Hannity and Colmes last night that Nader may be the only candidate that truly wants to take our troops out of Iraq. Apparently BO is changing his position on Iraq too and although he promised to get our troops out in 16 months he is now saying he’ll have to reassess the situation. On the show they also said that if Nader keeps his policy of withdrawing troops he’ll probably take many votes away from BO!!!

The Nameless One needs large forums just like Hitler did in 1938 in Berlin – Scares the S$$t out of me! I can’t help but think that he would bring on another 9/11, or worse!

I hope and pray that I’m wrong – I just don’t trust him! He needs to be stopped! The price is too high!

I totally agree with you. I am still hoping that more will come out about him and the media will finally let him have it.

One of the delegates said that if HBO wins, then he’ll move to another country. THAT is a great start for us. :) :) :) I AM VERY EXCITED TO HEAR THAT. :)

Notes from the DLC: Obama Disses the Centrists

As many of you know, the DLC held it’s Annual Conversation in Chicago
on Sunday and Monday. Though no one would say it publicly, there was
a fairly significant sense of disappointment that Barack Obama did
not attend the event – especially after news broke Monday morning
that Obama spent all day Sunday in Chicago getting his haircut and
playing hoops.

Understandably, the DLCers felt insulted that Obama couldn’t find 10
minutes to swing by and at least say hello to the roughly 600 elected
officials from around the country who were gathered, ironically
enough, less than a block or so from Obama headquarters.

One of the excuses I heard was that the organization is too closely
tied to the Clintons. But isn’t one of Obama’s primary objectives
over the next few months to win over Clinton voters? A tiny show of
respect to the DLC would seem like a good place to start, but
apparently the Obama high command didn’t feel it was necessary.

The move to publicly eschew meeting with the DLC is especially
interesting since Obama seems to be more or less running his campaign
from their playbook, tacking to the right on the death penalty, guns,
and picking spots in the heartland to aggressively court evangelicals
and profess his love of country. It does seem to be, to quote the
great Yogi Berra, deja vu all over again.
